GENERAL
“This Standard describes the procedures used to determine tear strength of vulcanized elastomers ue, the load
roquited to completely tear a proper specimen subjected to tensile stress. This method applies also to fexble
plastic materials,
2
ENVIRONMENT TEST AREA (unioss otherwise prescribed)
‘Temperature 2220
‘Atmosheric Prossure: 8600 1080 mbar
Relative humidity: 50+ 10%
3
TESTEQUIPMENT
Iteonsists of a standard dynamometer with fll scale value accuracy rating 621% provided with ial knurled jaws
for specimen ripping
3a
‘The movable jaw pul rate shall be 500 + 100 mmvmin and shall renin unchanged throughout the teat.
4
TEST SPECIMENS
‘Two types of specimens are used: one standard (Fig. 1) thet Corresponds to the one described in ASTM D624
‘Type B standard.

44
“Test specimens are obtained form slabs or parts by blanking, using a steel hollow punch whose edges shall be
free of any detect
42
‘Te favor blanking, the slab or part shall be placed resting on a rigid and fla surface interposing a sheet of material
apt to avoid any damage of holow punch cutting edge. Blanking shall be done by means ofa single sharp blow:
Slab or part surface may be lubricated using sudsy water or water with sueace-active agent wich wll not
‘damage the material hollow punch cutting edge can as well be moistened with silicone oll.
43
‘Test specimen thickness shall be measured with a graduated micrometerto 0.01 mm accutéey. 3.4
[At the center of specimen inner concave edge shall be cut 20.50 + 0.08 mm notch ()asig @ proper tool which
allows to have a high accuracy. The notch depth shall be checked on both sides of thespecimen undar 10Xmin
‘magnification.
6
TESTPROCEDURE
6A
“The determination is normally performed al 23 + 2°Ctemperature. Prot Uetermination, each specimen shall be
conditioned for atleast 3 hours at test temperature and shall be clamped in test machine jaws; the algnment with
the direction of load application shall be checked with great care,
‘Then, pull gradually and uniformly at 500 + 10 mimi rate unilthe complete tearing in two pieces cf the
‘specimen occurs; record the resultant maximum load.
62
Each test shall be performed on 3 specimens; value tod considered will be the average of the three readings.
63
If any value deviates more than 20% from this aveyabe, three adltional specimens shal be tested: in his case,
the final value o be reported will be given by the average ofthe remaining two values ofthe first test and the
three values obtained in the second test.
6
EXPRESSION OF RESULTS
The tear strength is expressed in Asim of thickness; therefore, itindicates the load required to tear a standard
‘specimen with uniform thickness of 1 mm,
Tear strength resistance > Fld
Where:
F= Max load, in.
D = specimeyithickness, in mm.
