CANDOMBLÉ NA SOCIEDADE
Abstract: This study was carried out with the general objective of considering
the significance of Candomblé in society. To this end, diverse studies were
consulted, about the history of Candomblé; about the relationship of Candomblé
with the environment, with feminism and with homosexuality; about syncretism;
and about religious intolerance. Candomblé is an Afro-Brazilian religion, with
roots in the various countries of origin of enslaved people, which became
consolidated through the oral tradition while maintaining significant differences.
Through its strong affirmation of Nature, Candomblé becomes a valuable
element in environmental movements. Other characteristics are the importance
of the feminine role among the divinities and among leaders of Candomblé
meeting places and a more open attitude than other religions in relation to
sexual orientation. Other topics considered were the syncretism between
Candomblé and Catholicism – currently being questioned, but still strong – and
the attacks suffered from neo-pentecostal churches.
