CALIBRATION
WARNING
Because of the high voltages in · the centrifuges. all replacement and calibration
procedures must be performed by qualified service personnel.
Any heavy rotor (H-4000/H-6000A) used with the RC-3C PLUS/RC - 3C can be used for current limit calibration of the High
Voltage Interface Printed Circuit Board.
1. Set the POWER switch to OFF and unplug the centrifuge power cord.
3. Attach an amp probe to TB 1 wire #2 (blue input line) to monitor the motor current.
-
4. Plug in the centrifuge power cord and set the POWER switch to ON.
5. Adjust the D/A reference voltage at TP7 (referenced to ground, TP14) on the
Microcomputer Printed Circuit Board as follows:
c. Set the RPM SPEED switches to the maximum rated speed for the rotor in use.
d. Set the ROTOR CODE switches to the code number for the rotor in use (see Table
2-1).
7. While the rotor is accelerating. adjust Rl02 (clockwise to decrease and counterclock-
wise to increase) on the High Voltage Interface Printed Circuit Board for a maximum
current draw of 1 7Arms. This allows IA for the motor cooling fan and controls. Since the current limit circuit varies
with rpm, the level should be set at 4000 rpm under full acceleration.
9. Recheck current setting after calibration. The final check should be done at zero rpm
and during acceleration.
1. Set the POWER switch to OFF and unplug the centrifuge power cord.
3. Using the door lock override button, open the centrifuge chamber door (refer to
paragraph 2-19, Emergency Sample Recovery).
CAUTION
To avoid damage to the temperature sensor, do not immerse the temperature sensor directly in water. Place
the temperature sensor inside a disposable rubber glove, then place the glove and sensor in the ice
bath.
5. Immerse the covered air temperature sensor in an ice bath (see figure 8-1). Reconnect the sensor to the main
harness, maintaining correct polarity: black to black, red to white.
·
NOTE
To achieve a temperature of 0°C, use only crushed ice (not ice cubes) in the ice bath. To ensure
accurate calibration of the temperature control circuit, monitor the temperature of the ice bath with a
thermometer. The sensor must be stabilized in the ice bath for 10 minutes prior to calibration. Agitate
sensor in ice bath for 10 to 15 seconds prior to calibration. Continue with the calibration procedure while
waiting for the sensor to cool.

6. Remove the front console panel and rest it on the top deck.
The SPEED RPM/RCF DISPLAY shows the temperature. The four 7-segment LED displays are read as XX.XX °C.
No decimal point is shown in the display . but values may be read to hundredths of a degree. Adjust R34 on the
Microcomputer Printed Circuit Board to compensate for manufacturing variations in the air temperature sensor.
The sequence for adjustment is R27, then R34. then R35. TP4 is referenced to J3 pin 8 and R27 is adjusted to
show c3990 (zero output) from the A/D converter in the four time digits. After the zero is adjusted, slope and
intercept adjustments must be made via R34 and R35. Because these adjustments interact . two or more
NOTE
A precise source of 239 and 324 µa is required for this calibration. J3 pin 8 must be used as a
ground reference. Use of any other ground reference may cause an offset of up to +2.0 °C, resulting
in inaccurate calibration and temperature display.
b . On the Microcomputer Printed Circuit Board. set switch S2 from NORM to DIAG
or connect a jumper at S2.
c. Connect a jumper wire from TP-4 ffemperature Signal Input) to J3 pin 8 (shielded
ground).

maximum negative voltage at TP2 (approximately -11. 8 to -11. 9 Vde). Then, adjust R69 in the opposite direction for
a 0.02 volt drop. DS7 should just start to turn on. It may be difficult to see.
Set the RUN speed switches to 0500 - DS7 should be about to turn on.
21. Remove the jumper between TP9 and TP14 on the Microcomputer Printed Circuit Board. Set the Diagnostic switch
S2 to NORM. or disconnect the jumper at S2.
23. Reinstall the front console panel and the lower rear panel.
24. Set the POWER switch to ON and perform a test run. Read the CAUTION on the next
page.
CAUTION
This adjustment should establish a maximum speed for the H-4000 rotor between 5400 and 5700 rpm.
If the maximum speed at nominal line ±1
Vac exceeds 5 700 rpm after calibration, R26 on the Microcomputer Printed Circuit Board has to be
adjusted to a lower voltage that prevents the maximum speed from being exceeded. Because of the
interaction of the D/A reference voltage and the zero power level, R69 on the Computer Interface
Printed Circuit Board may also need to be readjusted.
The H-4000 rotor, when properly calibrated takes 2.4 to 3.0 minutes to accelerate to 5250 rpm.
The maximum speed for the H-6000 rotor is 5000 rpm. If necessary, adjust R-26 on the Microcomputer
Printed Circuit Board to decrease the maximum speed to 5000 rpm.
NOTE
For proper imbalance detector calibration, the centrifuge must be level and evenly supported on its
casters and two front locking stabilizers.
The imbalance detector In the RC-3C PLUS and in RC-3C centrifuges manufactured after 11 I 87 consists of a
microswitch and trip arm. Ifyour centrifuge has this type of imbalance detector. begin the calibration procedure at step 1.
RC-3C centrifuges manufactured before 11/87 may not have been updated to the microswitch/trip arm imbalance detector.
If your centrifuge has an older style imbalance
detector (gold box) as described in paragraph 3-13. begin the procedure at step 7.
1. Remove the four mounting screws that secure the front control panel to the console.
Tilt the control panel forward and adjust R48 five turns from its full counterclockwise position. This should produce a
voltage of approximately 4.5 Vdc on the wiper arm of R48. Replace the front control panel.
2. Remove the rubber gyro cover to gain access to the imbalance trip arm which is
mounted on the gyro drive housing.
3. Loosen the locknut on the adjusting screw located at the tip of the imbalance trip arm.
4. Slowly turn the adjusting screw clockwise until the switch contacts are closed. (Listen for the switch to click.)
5. Note the position of the screw slot. then turn the adjusting screw 2-1 /2 turns in the
counterclockwise direction. Tighten the locknut on the adjusting screw .
NOTE
Microswitch/trip arm adjustments should be made with the adjusting screw on the gyro trip arm, not with
R48. R48 sets the logic level for the transition of the 222 op-amp and should be set for 4.5 Vdc at 222,
pin 6 (wiper arm of R48).
7. Remove the four mounting screws that secure the front control panel to the console,
but leave the panel in place. Set up the centrifuge as follows:
NOTES
Each rotor has a predetermined maximum weight in grams of imbalance that causes the OUT OF
BAIANCE advisory message to light and the centrifuge to shut down. Use an H-4000 rotor for
calibration if possible. Once the minimum and maximum weights are set for the H-4000 rotor, all other
rotors should meet the specifications listed in Table 8-1. If an H-4000 rotor is not available, each rotor
must be checked individually with the weights specified in Table 8-1.
For proper calibration of the imbalance detector, the TEMP °C display must show 0°C.
f. Run the rotor at 0°C and 4000 rpm to stabilize gyro-action drive temperature.

g. Insert the minimum weight. 125 grams, in one bucket. Secure the lid on the rotor and close the centrifuge
chamber door.
NOTE
Use rubber balancing disks, PN 00335, to achieve desired imbalance level.
8. Observe the OUT OF BALANCE advisory message as the rotor accelerates to 4000
rpm. If the minimum weight causes the OUT OF BALANCE advisory message to light and the centrifuge to shut
off. the detector is too sensitive. Adjust as follows:
a. Tilt front panel forward and adjust R48 on the Microcomputer Printed Circuit
Board clockwise to decrease imbalance sensitivity.
NOTE
The imbalance threshold is adjusted at R48 on the Microcomputer Printed Circuit Board.
Approximate calibration is achieved by adjusting R48 five turns from its full counterclockwise
position, which should produce a voltage of approximately 4.5 Vdc on its wiper.
If minimum weight does not cause the OUT OF BALANCE advisory message to light :
e. Leave the rotor on the spindle. Remove the minimum weight from the bucket and place it in the opposite
bucket.
If minimum weight in the opposite bucket causes the OUT OF BALANCE advisory message to light and the
centrifuge to shut off. the detector is too sensitive. Adjust as follows:
,.-... . _
If minimum weight in the opposite bucket does not cause the OUT OF BALANCE advisory message to light:
1. Leave the rotor on the spindle. Remove the minimum weight from the bucket.
9. Install the maximum weight (150 grams) in the bucket. Secure the lid on the rotor and close the centrifuge chamber
door.
11 . Observe OUT OF BALANCE advisory message as the rotor accelerates to 4000 rpm.
CAUTION
When the maximum weight is in the rotor compartment, the OUT OF BAIANCE advisory
message must light between 625 and 725 rpm. If it
does not, press the STOP switch to terminate the run. Adjust R48
counterclockwise prior to another run.
If the maximum weight does not cause the OUT OF BALANCE advisory message to light. the detector is not
sensitive enough. Adjust as follows :
b. Adjust R48 on the Microcomputer Printed Circuit Board counterclockwise to increase imbalance sensitivity.
If the maximum weight causes the OUT OF BALANCE advisory message to light and the centrifuge to shut off:
e. Leave the rotor on the spindle. Remove the maximum weight from the bucket and
place it in the opposite bucket.
If the maximum weight in the opposite bucket does not cause the OUT OF BALANCE advisory message to light,
the detector is not sensitive enough. Adjust as follows :
i. Adjust the R48 on the Microcomputer Printed Circuit Board counterclockwise to increase imbalance
sensitivity.
k. Repeat step 11. a through c for maximum weight in the opposite bucket.
If the maximum weight in the opposite bucket causes the OUT OF BALANCE advisory message to light and the
centrifuge to shut off:
I. Leave the rotor on the spindle. Remove the maximum weight from the bucket.
m. Go to step 12.
13. Reinstall the front control panel with the four mounting screws.

b. Cleaning
I. Rotor chamber : The rotor chamber should be kept clean and wiped dry routinely to
maintain efficient cooling . Wash the chamber with a mild non-alkaline dishwashing liquid, then rinse and dry
with a soft, absorbent cloth.
Use 70% ethanol to disinfect the rotor chamber or a 2% glutaraldehyde solution to sterilize it. For general
radioactive decontaimination, use a solution of equal parts of ethanol, l 0% SOS, and water. Follow this with
ethanol rinses then deionized water rinses. Dry with a soft, absorbent cloth. Dispose of all wash solutions in
proper radioactive waste containers.
Defrost the rotor chamber whenever ice builds in the chamber. Frost on the inner walls acts as insulation
between the chamber and the refrigerant and affects the efficiency of the system. nus. in turn, puts an
additional load on the drive system. The rotor chamber may be defrosted with the centrifuge off by opening
the chamber door and allowing the frost to melt, then sponging up the moisture .
Alternatively, with a rotor installed and the door closed, defrost by running the centrifuge for five minutes
with the temperature set at 40°C and speed set at 3000 rpm. When the rotor stops. remove it from the
chamber and wipe it dry . Wipe up the moisture remaining in rotor chamber with a sponge or cloth .
CAUTION
Chlorides are extremely harmful to aluminum alloy rotors. Take care to prevent any contact of
chloride with the rotors, or corrosion will result. This corrosion attacks the Inside as well as the
outside of the metal through barely detectable surface cracks, thus weakening the rotor without
visible warning signs.
A rotor must be installed if the centrifuge is operated in the RUN mode. Running the centrifuge
without a rotor may damage the centrifuge drive.
2. Rotors: Clean rotors with a clean cloth after each use. Once a week, or immediately
if spillage has occurred, wash the rotor with a mild non-alkaline household detergent and water, then rinse
and allow to dry.
Regularly inspect all rotors used with the centrifuge for corrosion and wear (e.g., pitting from contact with
caustic materials). If a rotor shows signs of wear or
corrosion, remove it from use and contact a DuPont service representative to have it inspected.
Inspect swinging bucket rotors on bearing surfaces and rotor trunnion pins for wear. Clean and lubricate the
pins and the underside surfaces of the bucket that ride on the pins. Rotor Cleaning Kit (Cat. No. 12259)
provides materials and instructions for the proper care and maintenance of swinging bucket rotors. The kit
includes:

At least once a week, the rotor body and the individual swinging buckets should be
washed in a solution of warm water and a mild detergent. After drying, inspect the rotor and buckets,
making sure they are thoroughly clean. Pay particular attention to the rotor pins and the mating bearing
surfaces of the buckets.
c. Wrap the strip around a rotor pin and pull it back and forth in an oscillating

After the cleaning is completed, lubricate both trunions and bucket bearing surfaces. Place the buckets on
the rotor pins and check to be sure that all buckets swing freely.
Worn or damaged pins or buckets may cause binding. Careful examination will
determine which part is defective and must be replaced.
3. Drive Spindle: Keep the spindle clean so the rotor does not stick to it. Wipe it with
a soft cloth each time before the rotor is installed. Warm water may be used for cleaning when the chamber
is defrosted. A clean undamaged surface is essential for proper rotor installation and removal. When
necessary, polish the spindle with #400 Emery cloth to restore its original finish. Wipe clean after polishing.

1) Slide the air filter toward the foam piece at one end of its holder. The air filter
will pop out of the holder. Discard the filter.
2) Slide one end of the new filter into the foam piece at the end of the holder and lower the other end
of the filter into the holder. The spring action of the foam piece will keep the air filter in place.
e. Reinstall the air filter assembly making sure the right end of the assembly engages
the small bracket on the backpack. Once the bracket is engaged, gently push upward on the other end
of the assembly to lock it in place.
6. Condenser Fins (RC-3C Only): Accumulations of dirt, dust and debris on the
condenser fins reduces the efficiency of the refrigeration system. Toe condenser fins are located in the rear
of the centrifuge as shown in figure 9-3. Check for such accumulation weekly and clean the condenser fins with
a brush or vacuum cleaner at least once a month to maintain refrigeration efficiency.
CAUTION
The condenser fins bend easily. Use care when cleaning.
CONDENSER FINS
c. Lubrication
All internal components are prelubricated and require no further lubrication. Toe refrigeration unit is hermetically
sealed, and the ball bearings in the gyro-action selfcentering drive assembly and centrifuge motor are
permanently lubricated.

Maintenance
If the preventive maintenance checks reveal existlng or potential problems with the centrifuge, perform the
appropriate repair or replacement procedure as outlined in Section 4.
Use the Preventive Maintenance Checklist (sample included at the end of this section) to record the completion
dates or procedures, pertinent data, and any comments relating to the maintenance and operation of the
centrifuge and rotors.
a. Preliminary Checks
Section 9-1 outlines the inspection and cleaning procedures that should be done routinely by the operator.
Check for evidence that the procedures are being done properly. Discuss any potential problems with the
operator and/ or customer.
b. Rotor Inspection
1. Inspect all rotors used with the centrifuge for corrosion and wear (e.g.. pitting from contact with caustic
materials).
2. · Inspect bucket bearing surface and rotor trunnion pins for wear. Clean and lubricate the pins and the under
side surfaces of the bucket area that ride on the pins (see rotor cleaning instructions in paragraph 9-1, b).
5. Record the serial numbers of the rotors inspected. If any problems are discovered,
note that fact on the check list and inform the customer.
NOTE
H-6000A operating instructions: All buckets must be in place during a run so that equal force ls
applied to the rotor body. Since these instructions are contrary to the original operating
instructions for the H-6000 rotor, check that the centrifuge operators are aware of this change.
c. Prerun Checks
1. Ground continuity
Check that the ground lug of the electrical plug is properly grounded and is shorted to the frame of the
centrifuge. Also, check that the ground lug of the outlet (wall
receptacle) ls properly grounded.
9-7
Preventive Maintenance SORV ALL ® Centrifuges
To check ground continuity, unplug the centrifuge and attach one probe of an ohmmeter to the ground lug on the
power cord. Set the meter to its lowest resistance scale. Touch the other probe of this ohmmeter to the chassis of
the centrifuge. The meter should show less than 0 . 1 ohms.
230-volt receptacle: Measure either side of the line-to-the-ground receptacle. Voltage should be 115 Vac. If no
voltage is measured, the receptacle is not properly grounded.
Remove the air filter assembly and rinse with warm water. Replace if necessary.
Remove all accumulated dust from the condenser coils and fins. Straighten the condenser flns if bent using a coil
cone (available at refrigeration supply stores).
4 . Rotor chamber
If ice has accumulated in the rotor chamber, defrost it. Refer to the procedure in paragraph 9-1. b.
a. Remove the latch cover and inspect all door latch parts for wear.
b. Make sure all screws are tight and all hardware is properly secured.
c. Lubricate the door interlock shuttle by placing a few drops of oil next to the Allenhead shoulder screws that
hold the shuttle in place. It is not necessary to remove
the shuttle unless it sticks.
d. Check for proper gap between the receiver and the shuttle (refer to paragraph
4-42).
e. Check that the centrifuge does not start with the chamber door open as follows:
6) Press the START switch. The centrifuge does not start and the DOOR
advisory message lights.
7) Close the door and press the START switch. The door advisory goes out and
the centrifuge starts.
7. Door seal
Place four pieces of paper approximately 1.8 x 15 cm (3/4x 6 inches) equally spaced around the top of the open
rotor chamber door. Close the chamber door and pull outward on each piece of paper. All should fit evenly and
create a frictional drag as they are being pulled. Check that door hinge screws are tight. Use Loctite" adhesive
if needed.
Inspect the door gas springs for proper operation. When the door is fully opened, the pressure in the springs should
keep the door open. Also, inspect the gas spring brackets
to make sure they are not cracked.
