Se fosse possvel sintetizar, em uma palavra, a condio semitica da comunicao nesse tempo de tecnocultura e tecnocincia, seria muito difcil fugir da palavra diversidade. O movimento de convergncia entre diferentes sistemas, de diferenciao dos cdigos, de expanso das linguagens, de redimensionamento de significaes, so evidentes manifestaes nesse sentido. Firmando o compromisso de promover uma compreenso cada vez mais acurada da diversidade semitica, este terceiro nmero da revista Galxia apresenta algumas formulaes a esse respeito. Na abertura da seo Frum o antroplogo e poeta Antnio Risrio assumiu a tarefa de definir para qual diversidade se voltam os estudos semiticos. Situando-se numa perspectiva crtica sobre a onda de movimentos em favor da biodiversidade, Risrio alerta sobre a inutilidade de tais protestos se a eles no estiver associada a defesa da semiodiversidade, entendida aqui como condio privilegiada da cultura humana e de tudo que chamamos vida. Nesse texto-manifesto se insinuam algumas questes que abrem um dilogo com outros artigos da revista, bem como com algumas linhas da abordagem daquilo que tem se definido como uma ecologia da comunicao. Os artigos de Vilm Flusser e de Eduardo Kac em torno da biotecnologia so exemplares dessa abordagem. Vilm Flusser apresenta um conjunto de idias sobre a diversidade da informao que permitiu as experincias artsticas desenvolvidas no contexto das descobertas da biotecnologia chave para o desenvolvimento de uma nova arte do viver, ou da ars vivendi como queria o autor. Muitas das indagaes que conduziram a reflexo de Flusser deixam o campo especulativo e tornam-se experincias vivas quando transportadas para o contexto 11

da investigao de Eduardo Kac. Enquanto Flusser cogitava da possibilidade da arte transgnica, Kac no mediu esforos para levar adiante seu projeto de criao de uma coelhinha transgnica. Em seu artigo, no apenas os passos dessa empreitada so apresentados, como tambm o amplo conjunto de idias sobre as novas formas de sociabilidade e de conduo tica que esse tipo de experincia artstica coloca para a sociedade. Kac conduz suas reflexes luz de um conjunto altamente diversificado de campos tericos do conhecimento, dentre eles, filosofia, lingstica, histria da arte, antropologia, cincias sociais, biolgicas e cognitivas um verdadeiro exerccio de transdisciplinaridade que nos to caro. Os trs artigos concentram, cada um a seu modo, pontos em defesa da semiodiversidade que do sustentao ao pensamento ecolgico. Com isso, a revista Galxia abre espao para formulaes que j so referncias obrigatrias para nossas pesquisas no campo da ecossemitica e da cibersemitica. Estou me referindo aos estudos da ecologia da comunicao que procuram entender a esfera do bios como constitutiva de um ambiente semitico denominado semion, ou a semiosfera, conceptualizada pelo semioticista estoniano Iuri Lotman. A revista Galxia no poderia deixar de reverenciar, aqui, outra grande contribuio terica brasileira para a constituio desse pensamento. Estou me referindo teoria do bios-miditico formulada pelo ensaista, membro do comit cientfico de Galxia, Muniz Sodr em seu mais recente trabalho Antropolgica do espelho (algumas idias desse livro que est no prelo podem ser encontradas em recente entrevista publicada pela Revista Famecos, de dezembro de 2001). O carter da abordagem transdisciplinar de Galxia, neste terceiro nmero, encontra-se fortalecido tambm por artigos de sua seo homnima. Comunicao da cincia e as relaes entre cognio e arte foram os temas alvo de anlise. Isaltina Gomes apresenta um trabalho de mrito nesse sentido. Ciente de que a informao cientfica torna-se objeto do conhecimento pblico, no ao ser enunciada pelos cientistas, mas ao ser transformada em matrias jornalsticas, Gomes examina a semiose lingstica e o jogo de ganhos e perdas ocorrido nesse processo de transposio. Alm desse estudo sobre a cincia na mdia, a sesso de artigos traz o trabalho de Ronaldo Bispo sobre estudos recentes, publicados em peridicos cientficos, que se voltaram para a compreenso da percepo e funcionamento do crebro em suas contribuies para uma outra compreenso do chamado prazer esttico. O compromisso com a anlise aplicada foi preservado nesse nmero de Galxia graas aos artigos que tomaram a comunicao como objeto de estudo. Ceclia Salles apresenta um artigo minucioso dos instrumentos tericos desenvolvidos no campo da crtica gentica para a focalizao semitica da comunicao. Almir Rosa, por 12

sua vez, examina o potencial esttico que os recursos tecnolgicos da televiso de alta definio vem aprimorando no Japo a partir de experincias da arte milenar, como, por exemplo, a gravura. Antonio Fausto Neto e Lucrecia Chauvel contriburam para o enriquecimento de um dos temas que sempre um desafio para os semioticistas: a relao entre mdia e discurso poltico. Chauvel analisa as notcias sobre os desaparecidos polticos durante a ditadura militar argentina. Fausto Neto enfrentou a difcil tarefa de compreender a religiosidade no contexto das mdias eletrnicas de comunicao. O papel das mdias na cultura contempornea tema que percorre vrios textos dessa edio de Galxia. Na entrevista de Lev Manovich possvel acompanhar o panorama do desenvolvimento tecnolgico na construo das linguagens e das interfaces digitais. O percurso dessas idias foi completado com a resenha do livro de Manovich, The Language of New Media. Na notcia sobre o curso, Arqueologia das mdias, ministrado pelo professor Ziegfried Zielinski, acompanhamos a trajetria histrico-cultural no propriamente dos meios, mas de procedimentos que colocam numa mesma esfera de construo, novas e velhas mdias. Tanto Manovich quanto Zielinski estudam as novas mdias no fluxo das conquistas que marcaram a civilizao ocidental. Por isso, os dois estudiosos recorrem arqueologia. O segundo semestre de 2001 foi particularmente rico de eventos na rea dos estudos de comunicao e da semitica. Dentre as reunies cientficas realizadas, duas foram noticiadas nessa edio. O IV Encontro Internacional sobre o Pragmatismo e o V Congresso Brasileiro de Semitica. A II Mostra Interpoesia tambm mereceu espao nessa sesso. Obras fundamentais foram lanadas enriquecendo os ttulos de nossa pesquisa acadmica. Foram resenhados os livros sobre as matrizes do pensamento, de Lucia Santaella, sobre arquitetura urbana, de Lucrcia Ferrara, sobre a obra de Kellreuter. Na seo de projeto, Paulo Angerami apresenta sua pesquisa fotogrfica com cmeras de ofcio. Embora o projeto editorial de Galxia tivesse concebido a seo de notcias para o relato de eventos culturais, cientficos e artsticos, a revista no deixa de noticiar as perdas de pessoas ilustres. Com profundo pesar, publicamos aqui a notcia do faleciomento de Thomas Sebeok, notvel semioticista e membro do Comit Cientfico de Galxia. Sua partida pode nos privar de sua companhia mas no de seus ensinamentos dos quais jamais poderemos abdicar. ***

Were it possible to sum up, in one word, the semiotic condition of communication in this age of technoculture and technoscience, it would be extremely hard to move away from the word diversity. The convergence movement of different systems, of codes differentiation, of languages expansion, of meanings redimensioning, are clearly a proof of its existence. Committed to promote an accurate understanding of the semiotic diversity, this third issue of Galxia presents a few ideas related to the topic. At the Forum session opening, the anthropologist and poet Antnio Risrio has taken up the task of defining which diversity the semiotic studies are directed to. Taking a critical perspective towards the wave of movements in favor of biodiversity, Risrio warns us about the uselessness of such acts if they are not linked to the fight for the semiodiversity, here understood as the privileged condition of human culture and of everything we call life. In this manifesto-text some questions are raised in way to open a dialogue with the other articles present in this issue, as well as a few lines on the approach which has been seen as communication ecology. Vilm Flussers and Eduardo Kacs articles on biotechnology are examples of such approach. Vilm Flusser presents a set of ideas about information diversity that has enabled the development of artistic experiences in the context of biotechnologies findings the key to develop a new art of living, or the ars vivendi as put by the author. Many of the questions that guided Flussers reflections move away from the realm of speculation and become live experiences when brought to Eduardo Kacs context of investigation. Whilst Flusser considered the possibility of transgenic art, Kac rolled his sleeves up and carried out his project to create a transgenic hare. In his article, not only do the steps of such endeavor are presented, but also the wide set of ideas about the new forms of sociability and ethical conduct that this kind of artistic experience brings to society. Kac carries his reflections in light of a highly diverse set of theoretical fields of knowledge, ranging from philosophy, linguistics, art history, anthropology, and social, biological and cognitive sciences a genuinely exercise on transdisciplinarity so dear to us all. Each of the three articles concentrates, in its own way, points to back the semiodiversity that supports the ecological thought. By doing so, Galaxia makes room for ideas that already stand out as compulsory references for our researches in the field of ecosemiotics and cybersemiotics. Here, I refer to studies related to the ecology of communication that seek to understand the biosphere as constitutive of a semiotic environment named semion, or the semiosphere, conceptualized by the Estonian semiotician Iuri Lotman. not forget to revere, here, another great theoretical Brazilian contribution for the development of this thinking. I refer to the bios-mediatic theory, devised by the essayist and Galxias scientific referee, Muniz Sodr in his latest work Anthropologics of the mirror (a book to yet be published, but parts of which can be found in a recent interview published in Revista Famecos December 2001 issue). Articles of its homonym section also support the transdisciplinary approach in this present issue of Galxia. Science communication and the relation between art and cognition were the target themes for analysis. Isaltina Gomes presents a noteworthy work in this sense. Aware of the fact that scientific information becomes a public object of knowledge, not when it is uttered by the scientists, but when it is transformed into journalistic reports, Gomes examines the linguistic semiosis and the gambling game that take place throughout the transposing process. Besides this study about science and the media, the article section brings Ronaldo Bispos work on recent studies, issued by scientific journals, which have focused on the understanding of perception and cerebral functioning towards the so-called aesthetic pleasure. The commitment with the applied analysis was preserved in this issue thanks to the articles that took communication as a study object. Ceclia Salles presents a detailed study on the theoretical tools developed in the field of critical genetics focusing on communication semiotics. Almir Rosa, in his turn, looks into the aesthetic potential that high-definition television technological resources have been improving in Japan based on millenary art experiences, such as the engraving. Antonio Fausto Neto and Lucrecia Chauvel have contributed to the enrichment of one the most challenging themes for semioticians: the relation between the media and the political discourse. Chauvel analyses the news about the disappeared during the Argentinean military dictatorship. Fausto Neto has taken up the hard task of understanding religiousness in the context of electronic communication media. The role of the media in the contemporary culture is a subject that crosses many of the texts in this Galxia issue. In Lev Manovichs interview we can follow the unfolding of technological development in the construction of languages and digital interfaces. The path of those ideas is resumed with Manovichs The Language of New Media review. In the news about the course Media Archaeology, conducted but professor Ziegfried Zielinski, we followed the historical-cultural pathway not exactly of the means themselves, but of the procedures that bring together into the same construction sphere, old and new media. Both Manovich and Zielinski study the new media in the flow of achievements that marked the Western civilization. That is why both theoreticians resort to archaeology. 15

The second semester of 2001 was particularly rich in terms of events in the area of communication studies and of semiotics. Among the scientific meetings that took place, two are reported in this issue. The IV International Meeting on Pragmatism and the V Brazilian Semiotics Congress. The II Interpoetry Presentation has also received comments in the events section. Seminal works have been launched and enriched our academic research titles. Books by Lucia Santaellas, Lucrcia Ferraras and the book about Kellreuters work were reviewed here. In the project section, Paulo Angerami presents his photographic research with cameras. Although Galxias editorial project was originally conceived as a newsletter to report on cultural, scientific and artistic events, the journal cannot omit the news about the losses of distinguished persons. With immense grief, we bring to notice Thomas Sebeoks death, a unique semiotician and member of Galxias Scientific Board. His departure might deprive us of his company, but not of his teachings, which we shall never give up.
