Superlative

Usa-se o superlativo toda vez que queremos expressar a qualidade de um adjetivo no seu
mais alto grau. Não há comparações com outros seres, uma vez que a intenção é intensificar
uma determinada característica.
 Para os adjetivos com três ou mais sílabas, deve-se seguir a forma: the most + adjective
Mary is the most intelligent girl of our class. (Mary é a garota mais inteligente da nossa sala).
 Para os adjetivos com uma ou duas sílabas, deve-se utilizar o “the + adjetivo com est”.
The Volga is the longest river in Europe. (O Volga é o maior (em extensão) rio da Europa).
 Se o adjetivo com uma ou duas sílabas terminar em CVC (consoante + vogal + consoante),
deve-se dobrar a última letra e acrescentar “est”.
Cindy is the thinnest girl of our family. (Cindy é a garota mais magra da nossa família).
 Se o adjetivo com uma ou duas sílabas terminar em “y” precedido de consoante,
deve-se retirar o “y” e acrescentar “iest” ao adjetivo.
Bob is the craziest boy of our classroom. (Bob é o garoto mais louco da nossa sala).
 Obs.: Os adjetivos “good” (bom) e “bad” (ruim) possuem formas próprias para o
superlativo. Good (bom) → the best (o melhor)
Bad (ruim) → the worst (o pior)
Amanda is the best teacher of our school. (Amanda é a melhor professora da nossa escola).
This is the worst movie I’ve ever seen. (Este é o pior filme que eu já vi).
Os adjetivos superlativos irregulares são os mesmos que os adjetivos comparativos irregulares.
Entretanto, a forma deles ocorre alterações, o que torna necessária atenção redobrada. Segue
na tabelinha com as formas dos adjetivos irregulares que já aprendemos.

✯ Alguns adjetivos podem ser usados tanto da forma regular, quanto da forma irregular. São
alguns deles: friendly, polite, simple, quiet e tired. Examples:
The best thing in our lives is our family. (A melhor coisa em nossas vidas é nossa família)
His house is the farthest of the city. (A casa dele é a mais longe da cidade).
Quando os adjetivos atuam como superlativos, a maioria deles recebe “EST” no final. Examples:
 Old = The oldest / Velho = O mais velho
The old man = O homem velho
The oldest man = O homem mais velho
➡ Porém, em alguns adjetivos, não será possível usar “EST” como sufixo, e nestes casos,
usaremos “THE MOST”.
Por exemplo:
 Beautiful = The most beautiful / Bonita = A mais bonita
The beautiful city = A cidade bonita
The most beautiful city = A cidade mais bonita
