• Founder of the Vienna Secession, a school of painting that specialized in
Art Nouveau.
• Known for his highly decorative style that utilized unique use of pattern
and color combined with gold leaf in his paintings.
• Some of his most successful artworks included The Kiss (1908-09), along
with a series of portraits of stylish Viennese matrons, such as Fritza
Riedler (1906) and Adele Bloch-Bauer I (1907).

• Klimt’s painting, Adele Bloch-Bauer I (1907) (also known as Woman in
Gold), was seized by the Nazis during World War II and was displayed in Photographic portrait of Gustav Klimt By
the Belvedere Museum in Vienna until 2006 when Maria Altmann, Adele Josef Anton Trčka. Public Domain
Bloch-Bauer’s niece, won the now famous art restitution case against the
Viennese government. The historical case and story of the painting once
again shined the spotlight on Klimt’s art.
