Studio Handbook
by Radu Vero
The airbrush isa versatile instrument thatis used
for everything from photographic retouching to
the cteation of works of fine art, yet its operation
remains a mystery to many. In this, the first
comprehensive instructional guide to the air
brush, Radu Vero, commercial illustrator and
‘master of airbrush technique, reveals in clear,
eaxy-to-understand language, the operations,
techniques, and theories behind its successful
use. Each step of the way is illustrated with
examples, demonstrations, and exercises with
problems and solutions to cement the readers
understanding,
The book by rush itself
how its constructed, the different models avail-
able, and how you ean select the airbrush that is
most suited to your needs. Proper maintenance
of the instrument is explained, including how to
repair your airbrush and keep it in the best
possible working order
The airbrush can be used to paint in virtually
any medium that is liquid—be it watercolos,
gouache, acrylics, oils, alkyds, or inks, and the
author fully describes the use ofall these medi-
ums in the airbrush, along with the unique
effects that can be obtained with each one. The
properties of light and color inherent toairbrush
art are discussed, as well as painting surfaces for
the airbrush and how to prepare them. Materials
for transferring drawings onto surfaces, and
those used in the creation of masks are also
described.
Equipped with the knowledge of the basic
principles behind the use ofthe airbrush, you are
now taught how to put them to use. The second
section explains the fundamental techniques of
using an airbrush, beginning with the freehand
use of the airbrush, moving on to the use of
‘masks and shields, and continuing with more
advanced techniques and applications. This sec-
tion ends with a detailed discussion of how the
unique effects of color are obtained and em:
ployed with the airbrush.
Finally, the most advanced of all airbrush
applications—the rendering of the human face
—'s explained in detail. In these concluding
chapters, all ofthe previously described lessons
‘on technique, rendering, and color formation
culminate in a full-color, step-by-step demon:
stration of the creation of a human portrait.
The book concludes with a gallery of the work
of 13 virtuosos of the airbrush, depicting in full
color the variety of styles, effects, and imagery
available to the airbrush artist.
