ethod 100 HUNGARIAN FOLK SONGS
BOOSEY & HAWKESThis collection of one hundred Hungarian folksongs was incorporated into the late Zoltin Kodily's
Choral Methodto perform a number of educationally useful and yet separate functions.
Apart from being a source of national folk-melodies. they provide exercises in sight-reading. and the
form of notation used should also be employed by the children in music dictation.
They are, however. performance-pieces, albeit for classroom use. and should be learned in conjunc-
tion with sight-reading training using 333 Elementary Exercises.
The manner in which the phrases are repeated at a lower pitch. being tonal (sometimes real) answers
within the pentatone. provides for both an elementary understanding of melodic form, and a model for
improvisation within a given form-structure.
‘When learning these pieces. if there is any new element in the rhythm. and indeed with every piece
which is being ihtroduced to an inexperienced class, the rhythm should first be clapped through before
any attempt is made to sing. In addition, singing each song phrase by phrase gives the pupil an under-
standing of the structure of the melody. as he can see and hear the differences and similarities between the
variouselements.
In some cases. where, for example, three-bar phrases are introduced for the first time, or where the
phrasing is not immediately apparent, a signis placed after the barline, thus. The first time this appears,
itisalso marked “breathe”. (see p. 11).
Many of the songs later in the book are marked “Parlando™. These are folksongs which should be
performed like Gregorian chant, and with a real rhythmic freedom. Pieces marked “Rubato™, on the
other hand, should not be treated so freely, this direction being interpreted more in line with instrumental
tradition
Although few children outside Hungary will know these folksongs in their original form, many of
them are included in Bicinia Hungarica I-IV, set for two voices, where the pupils will meet shem again as
“old friends
