Especially, loss of toughness is scvere in ease of large heat input welding. ‘Therefore, various hinds of steck for large heat input welding have been developed", Tt is said that the main factors of this loss of tough ness are a coarsening of the structure and the formed structure itself. Austenite grain near the fasion line is very coarse, but the effect of heat input on grain site near the fusion line is not so large that it eannot ‘account for severe loss of toughness in large heat i welding! However, the effective grain size may yarp when the transformed structure varies, even if austenite grain size is identical, On the other hand, micros ely investigated. However, effect of ti in HAZ on toughness has not been made ecially, it is said. that martensite-austenite vent (ako called high carbon nrart (ALA) con: 1) formed in HAZ has a significant effect on towgh- nes, However, the true nature of this cons tucnt and its effect on toughness of HAZ is not known well. With this in considera high tensile stcel was investi iewpoints of M-A constituer touginess of HAZ of ed mainly from the and effective grain 2 Material used and experimental method * class high Chemical composition of the #0 kg/m strength sicel used is shown in Table Le Some examples of simuated HAZ thermal cycles applied using icy induction heating ap- Poratus are shown in Fig, 1. As will be shown in later sections, cooling condition below 500°C abo exerts some influence on toughness, therefore the temperature was controlled until it fell to 200" ‘Thermal cycles were determined based on heat con- duction equation in weldin Microstructure was observed by scanning electron, microscope (SEM} and transmission electron mi- eroscope (FEM).
