RESUMO
ABSTRACT
This paper approaches the film adaptation of the theater play “A Falecida” (The
Deceased Woman) by Nelson Rodrigues, carried out by film director Leon
Hirszman, as a partial product of the research done under the Master Program
in Performance Arts at the Federal University of Bahia (Brazil). The artistic
references inspiring Nelson Rodrigues into writing the play as well as the
historical context in which the film – produced by the writer – was shot are
briefly reviewed. Some connections between the theater play and the film
adaptation are sought, including the film reception by the writer and some film
reviewers. The authorial features the film director conveys in his work are
analyzed on the basis of the guidelines for Brazil’s “Cinema Novo” (New
Cinema) movement, especially its emphasis on the social aspects. A discussion
is then carried out on the extent to which such transcreation allows a new look
at Nelson Rodrigues’s work.
