ABSTRACT:
The study included seventy elderly patients who were randomly selected. Data was
collected in April, 2002, by appointment, observation and physical examination,
contemplating physical, mental, functional and social evaluation. In the social Evaluation,
93% received 01 to 04 minimal salaries; 58,6% were illiterate and lived with two to five
people; 63% were married; 30% were widow(er)s. In the physical evaluation, high blood
pressure was observed in 82% and obesity in 64,3% of them. Concerning auditive and
vision deficits,33% and 81%, respectively, were found to have them. Sleeping problems
were present in 56%. There were urine and intestine disturbances in 28% and 25%,
respectively. The functional valuation showed that most of them are independent in daily
activities, for example: hygiene habits (94,3%), eating ( 98,6%), dressing (88,6%), moving
(91,4%) and communicating (45,7%).
