Minha casa

My house

– Meu nome é Júlia. Tenho nove anos de idade. Minha mãe se chama Carmem e meu pai Afonso.

– My name is Júlia. I am 9 years old. My Mother’s name is Carmen and my father’s Afonso.

– Nossa vizinha me busca na escola e fica comigo até minha mãe chegar.

– Our neighbor pick me up at school and stay with me until my mother arrives.

– O nome dela é Bruna. Ela é muito legal e me ajuda com os deveres escolares.

– Her name’s is Bruna. She is very nice and helps me with homework.

– Ela é minha babá e também minha amiga.

– She is my nanny and my friend.

Nosso quintal tem árvores e frutas

Our backyard has trees and fruit.

– Nossa casa fica em frente à praia. Tem muitas árvores. São aroeiras, coqueiros, amendoeiras. E, tem
também avocados e goiabeiras.

– Our house is in front of the beach. There are many trees. Are aroeiras, coconut trees, almond trees.
And, there are avocado trees e guava trees.

– De vez em quando, meu pai faz uma pequena fogueira na praia, enquanto vemos o sol se pôr no
horizonte. As cores são lindas.

– Every once, in a while my dad makes a little bonfire on the beach, while was see the sun set on the
horizon. The colors are beautiful.

– Eu amo ver as ondas se transformando em espumas na areia.

– I love to see the waves turning into foams in the sand.

– Quando temos sorte, podemos ver grupos de golfinhos saltando sobre as ondas.

– When we Lucky we can see groups of dolphins jumping on the waves.

– Depois, papai junta os restos da fogueira e leva para depositar em nossa lixeira de recicláveis.

Meus amigos

My friends

– Eu tenho quatro amigos. Todos moram perto da minha casa.

– I have four friends. Everyone lives near my house.

– Pablo e a Larissa são meus vizinhos. Ele mora à direita e ela à esquerda.

– Pablo and Larissa are my neighbors, he lives right and she left.

– Rui mora perto da cachoeira, que fica no final da praia.

– Rui lives near the waterfall, at the end of the beach.

– Pablo é cadeirante. A mãe dele é espanhola, então ele fala espanhol muito bem, nossas brincadeiras
são muito divertidas porque ele sempre nos ensina novas palavras e nos conta histórias sobre a Espanha.

– He is a wheelchair. His mother is Spanish so he speaks Spanish very well. Our games are so much fun,
because he always teaches us new words and tells us stories about Spain.

– Yara mora perto do Rui. A família dela é descendente dos poucos índios que ainda moram na serra do
outro lado da rodovia.

– Yara lives near Rui. Her family is a descendant of the few Indians who still lives on other side of the
highway.

A escola

The school

– Após o café da manhã, mamãe me coloca em sua bicicleta para me levar à escola.

– After breakfast, Mom puts me on her bicycle to take me to school.

– Meu pai fica muito bonito com o uniforme dos correios.

– My father looks very handsome in the Post Office uniform.

– Minha professora é muito gentil e sempre nos ensina coisas muito interessantes.

– My teacher is very kind and Always teaches us very interesting things.

– Meus amigos e eu estamos no sexto ano do ensino fundamental. Minha matéria preferida é geografia.

– My friends and I are in the sixth year of elementary school. My favorite subject is geography.

– Na hora do recreio brincamos de roda, ‘pique-tá’ e amarelinha.

– At playtime, we play with little balls and little hopscotch.

– Às sextas-feiras é dia de educação física. Eu amo educação física!

– Fridays is physical education day. I love physical education!

A festa da cidade

The city party

– Este final de semana foi muito legal. Foi aniversário da cidade e o Prefeito fez uma grande festa como
faz todos os anos.

– This weekend was very cool. It was the city’s birthday and the mayor made a big party like every year.

– A praça da igreja fica cheia de gente. Tem muitas barraquinhas de doces e tudo é muito iluminado.

– The church square is full of people. It has lots of candy stalls end everything is very bright.

–Tem teatro no coreto. É muito animado. Nessa época eu faço novos amigos, mas só os revejo no próximo
ano.

– There’s theater in the bandstand. It is very lively. This time I make new friends, but only, review them next
year.

Meu tio astronauta

My uncle astronaut

– Eu estava em cima da goiabeira, quando minha mãe pediu para eu descer e tomar banho mais cedo,
porque teríamos visita para o jantar.

– I was on top of the go guava trees, when my mother asked me to come downstairs and take a shower
early because we would have dinner visit.

– Eu fiquei muito feliz, quando ela disse que meu tio astronauta viria para o jantar.

– I was very happy when she said that my uncle astronaut would come to dinner.

– Ele sempre me contava histórias incríveis sobre os planetas e as galáxias.

– He always told me incredible stories about the planets and galaxies.

– Seria um jantar maravilhoso. No dia seguinte eu teria muitas novidades para contar para meus amigos.

– It would be a wonderful dinner. The next day, I would have many news to tell my friends.

Minha tia é uma artista

My aunt is an artist

– Uma semana depois que meu tio foi embora, minha mãe me levou no ateliê da minha tia Clarisse, irmã
dela.

– A week my uncle left, my mother took me to the atelier of my aunt Clarisse, her sister.

– Eu me sentia em um mundo mágico! Tudo era tão bonito!

–I felt in magical world. Everything was so beautiful!

– Uma tela era mais bonita do que a outra. No entanto eu prefiro as pinturas dos bosques e jardins.

– One screen was prettier than the other. However, I prefer the paintings of the woods and gardens.

– Eu imagino ser uma fada, e que vivo em um daqueles bosques.

– I imagine being a fairy and that I live in one of those woods.

– Ao ver meu entusiasmo, titia me presenteou com um dos seus quadros.

–To see my auntie enthusiasm presented me with one of her pictures.

– Eu agradeci a ela, e quando chegamos em casa, papai o pendurou na parede do meu quarto.

– I thanked her, and when we got home, daddy hung it on my bedroom wall.

Férias na fazenda do vovô José

Vacation at Grandfather Jose’s farm.

– Finalmente as férias de final de ano chegaram e eu iria passar uma semana na fazenda do vovô José.

– Finally, the end of the year vacation came and I was going to spend a week at grandpa’s farm.

– A fazenda ficava no início da montanha, e um rio de nome Curió.

– The farm was at the beginning of the mountain, and a river of name Curió.

– Meu avô plantava milho e feijões do outro lado do rio. Só os adultos podiam ir lá, porquê havia
jaguatiricas, capivaras e às vezes apareciam jacarés. Não era seguro para crianças irem lá sozinhas.

–My grandfhater planted corn and beans across the river. Only adults could go there, because there were
– Ocelots, capybaras and sometimes alligators.
– A entrada era muito bonita e todas as manhãs acordávamos com o barulho das aves.

– The entrance was very beautiful and every morning we agreed with the noise of the birds.

– A semana passou rápido, e eu estava feliz, mas sentia falta de casa.

– The week passed quickly, and I was happy but I missed home.

– Pedirei permissão a mamãe para que Yara passe as próximas férias aqui comigo.

– I’II ask mom to allow Yara to spend the next vacation here with me.

– Este ano foi maravilhoso! Aprendi coisas novas na escola. Fiz novos amigos, meu tio astronauta me
visitou, fui ao ateliê da minha tia e passei as férias na fazenda do vovô.

– This year was wonderful. Learn new things at school. I made new friends, my uncle astronaut visited me, I
went to my aunt’s atelier, and spent the holidays at grandpa’s farm!

Volta às aulas

Back to school

– Eu estava muito entusiasmada com a volta às aulas.

– I was very excited about the back to school.

– Entrou um novo aluno em minha sala de aula. Ele se chama André e morava no Rio de Janeiro.

– A new student entered my classroom. His name André and he lived in Rio de Janeiro.

– André é albino e seus cabelos são ruivos. Na hora do recreio ele se juntou a nós e foi muito
divertido.

– André is albino and his hair is red. At playtime, he joined us and it was a lot of fun.

– Ele nos contou sobre todas as coisas que ficam perto da casa dele como cinema, teatro e
shopping.

– He told us about all the things that are near his house like movies, theater and shopping.

– Nos disse que o pai dele é médico e que sua mãe tem uma loja de roupas virtual.

– Told us that his father is a doctor and that his mother has a virtual store.

Fim de semana com Yara e Rui

Weekend with Yara and Rui

– Meus pais são amigos dos pais da Yara e do Rui. Nossas mães combinaram um almoço em
nossa casa

No sábado.

– My parents are friends of Yara and Rui’s parents. Our mothers combined a lunch at our house on
Saturday.

– Logo pela manhã a casa estava lotada de gente. Meu pai acendeu churrasqueira com os amigos,
enquanto minha mãe e suas amigas preparavam a salada.

– Early in the morning, the house was crowded with people. My father lit the barbecue with his
friends while my mother and her friends prepared the salad.

– Depois do almoço fomos brincar na praia. Rui sugeriu irmos à cachoeira. Fiquei com medo, mas
Yara se animou então, concordei.

– After lunch, we went to play on the beach. Rui suggested going to the waterfall. I was scared, but
Yara was encouraged then I agreed.

– Rui conhecia bem aquele caminho porque sua casa ficava próxima à cachoeira.

– Rui knew well that way because his house was near the waterfall.

– Estávamos tão empolgados que esquecemos de avisar nossos pais.

– We were so excited that we forgot to tell our parents.

– O caminho era muito bonito. A encosta era completamente coberta pela mata atlântica, muito
verde e molhada.

– The way was very beautiful. The slope was completely covered by the Atlantic forest.

The woods

– Atravessamos uma ponte pequena que ficava depois da casa do Rui.

– We crossed a small bridge that was after Rui’s house.

– Já não víamos o mar. O barulho da cachoeira era muito alto e a água que batia nas pedras me
molhava toda. Mamãe não gostaria nada daquilo.

– We no longer saw a sea. The noise from the waterfall was very loud and the water that hit the
rocks made me wet. Mom would not like anything about that.

– Entramos em um bosque muito florido. O lugar cheirava a flores frescas. Vimos coelhos e
porquinhos-da-índia. Corríamos atrás deles e nos divertimos muito.

– We entered a very flowery grove. The place smelled like fresh flowers. We saw rabbits and guinea
pigs. We ran after them and had a lot of fun.

– Esquecemos da hora...

– We forget the time...

– Vimos uma montanha imensa ao leste, que tinha o formato de um gigante deitado.

– We saw an immense mountain to the East, which had the shape of a giant lying down.

– Resolvemos nos aproximar um pouco mais e encontramos uma gruta, quando olhamos para o
Oeste, o sol estava se pondo. Estávamos encrencados de verdade!

–We decided to get a little close and we found a grotto, when we looked to the West, the sun was
setting.

–We were really in trouble!

– Rui! – Exclamei apavorada! – Veja o que fizemos! Nossos pais devem estar nos procurando!

– Rui! – I exclaimed in terror! – See what we did! Our parents should be looking for us!

– Calma! Voltaremos imediatamente! – Mas Yara achou melhor esperarmos por ajuda.

– Calm! We’ll be back immediately! – But Yara thought it best to wait for help.

– Vai escurecer em poucos minutos e podemos nos perder. – Disse Yara.

– It will be dark in a few minutes and we can get lost. – Said Yara

– Vamos nos proteger dentro da gruta. Lá certamente é mais seguro. – Afirmou Rui.

– Let’s protect ourselves inside the cave. There is certainly safer. – Said Rui.

– Vou pegar alguns galhos e faremos uma fogueira para espantar os animais.

– I’II get some branches and we’II make a bonfire to scare the animals.

The mountain of the sleeping giant II

– Fizemos uma fogueira com galhos secos enquanto a noite caiu rapidamente. A gruta era
pequena, mas estávamos confortáveis. Não me lembro de ter visto o céu tão estrelado. O vento assoviava como
quem pedisse silêncio.

– We made a bonfire with dry branches while the night fell fast. The grotto was small, but we were
comfortable. I do not remember seeing the sky so starry. The Wind whistled like someone asking for silence.

– Rui conseguiu arrumar um galho forte e afiado como se fosse uma lança. – É Para nos proteger. –
Disse ele.

– Rui managed to fix a Strong branch and sharp as if it were a spear. – Is protect us. – He said.

– A lenda diz, que essa montanha é nosso primeiro ancestral. – Disse Yara.

– The legend says that this mountain is our first ancestor.

– Você quer dizer um índio que já morreu? – Perguntei apavorada.

– Do you mean an Indian who has died? – I asked scared.

– Sim, mas isso foi há muito tempo, quando somente o povo indígena morava aqui.

– Yes but this was a long time ago, when only the indigenous people lived here.

– A montanha também é conhecida pelo nome de ‘O guardião da terra que vive’.

– The mountain is also known by the name ‘the guardian of the land that lives’.

– Depois que invadiram e substituíram o líder da aldeia, os invasores permitiram que ele tivesse um
sepultamento seguindo os rituais tribais e, no dia seguinte, uma pequena montanha de terra havia se elevado
no túmulo e, cada dia que passava a montanha crescia, e foi crescendo cada vez mais até ficar com a forma de
um gigante deitado.

– After they invaded and replaced the village leader, the invaders allowed him to have a burial
following the tribal rituals and, the next day, a small mountain of earth had risen in the tomb and every day that
passed the mountain grew, and was growing more and more until it was in the form of a giant lying down.

– Ai meu Deus! Eu estou ficando com medo Yara! Nós estamos no pé da montanha! Na entrada da
gruta! Por favor, você pode contar outra história ou não contar mais nada?

– Oh my God! I’m Getting scared Yara! We are at the base of the mountain at the entrance to the
grotto!

Please, can you tell another story or tell me nothing else? – I begged scared.

– Não foi para assustar você. Replicou Yara. É uma das histórias do meu povo. Meu pai diz que o
objetivo de a montanha ter o formato de um gigante deitado, é para nos lembrarmos de que somos o povo mais
antigo dessa região. E ele está lá para nos lembrar disso.

– It was not to scare you. Yara replied. It’s one my people’s stories. My father says that the goal of
the mountain take the shape of a giant lying down is to remind us that we are the oldest people of this region.

A Jaguatirica

The Ocelot

– Yara parou de falar e nesse mesmo instante ouvimos um ronronar lá fora. Era uma onça! Eu sabia
que era onça. Eu já tinha ouvido esse barulho antes lá em casa quando as galinhas do papai estavam sumindo.
Ele disse que esse ronronar é de onça!

– Yara stopped talking and at that moment, we heard a growl outside. It’s was a Jaguar! I knew it
was Jaguar I had heard this noise before at home when Dad’s chickens were disappearing.

– Calma Júlia, é só uma Jaguatirica! Ela não vai se aproximar por causa do fogo. – Disse Yara.

– Calm Júlia, is only a Jaguar, she will not approach because of fire! – said Yara.

– Mas a Jaguatirica parecia mais assustada do que nós e fugiu apressada no meio da mata.

– But the Jaguar looked more frightened than us and fled in middle of the woods.

Logo entendemos o motivo. Nossos pais estavam se aproximando e gritando nossos nomes!

– We soon understood why. Our parents were approaching and shouting our names!

– Começamos a gritar também para que eles pudessem nos ouvir e chegar até nós.

– We started shouting so they could hear them and get to us.

O retorno

The comeback

– Naquele momento não sabia se estava com mais medo de reencontrar meus pais, ou da
Jaguatirica.

– At that moment I did not know if was more afraid to meet my parents or the ocelot.

O retorno para casa foi um misto de muitas promessas de castigos e de declarações de amor.

– The return home was a mix of many promises of punishments and declarations of love.

Nós sabíamos que estávamos errados, então só queríamos chegar em casa, tomar um banho e comer alguma
coisa.

– We knew we were wrong, so we just wanted to get home to take a shower and eat something.

– A minha cama me pareceu muito mais quentinha e confortável do que realmente era.

– My bed felt much more warm and comfortable than it really is.

Estava feliz por estar em casa a salvo, e por saber que meus amigos também estavam em segurança com suas
famílias.

– I was happy to be home safely, and to know that my friends were also safe with their families.

– O dia estrava lindo. Não havia nenhuma nuvem no céu.

Finalmente chegou o dia em que conheceria a reserva indígena a qual pertencia a família de Yara.

–The day was beautiful. There was no cloud in the sky. Finally came the day to meet the indigenous
reserve which belonged to the family of Yara.

– Eu estava no portão inquieta esperando Yara e seus pais. Me sentia muito feliz, afinal, meus pais
permitiram o passeio tão esperado por mim e Yara.

– I was standing in front of the restless gate waiting for Yara and her parents.

– Não demorou muito para que eles chegassem.

– It did not take long for then to arrive.

– Eu ouvi atentamente as recomendações da mamãe, para ser educada e responsável.

– I listen carefully to mom’s recommendations for being polite and responsible.

– Nos despedimos e seguimos viagem.

– We say goodbye and we go on the trip.

– então, pronta para conhecer minha família Júlia? – perguntou-me Yara. – claro que sim. - respondi com
um sorriso que não tirava do rosto.

– So, ready to meet my family Júlia? – Yara asked me.

– Yea. – I replied with a smile that I could not get out of my face.

– Yara me presenteou com um lindo colar colorido de boas-vindas.

–Yara gave me a beautiful colorful necklace it´s welcome – she said.

–Todos ficarão felizes em conhece-la. - obrigada. Respondi.

– Everyone will be happy to meet you.

A feira de exposição

The exhibition fair

– Após algumas horas na antiga Rodovia Rio-São Paulo, Caynã, pai da Yara, seguiu por uma estrada de
barro que parecia não ter fim.

– After a few hours on the old Rio-São Paulo highway, Yara´s father followed a muddy road that seemed to
have no end.

– Até que chegamos a uma planície onde ficava um grande estacionamento, onde havia uma
movimentada feira de exposição. Tudo era feito pelos indígenas da reserva.

– Until we arrived in a plain where there was a large parking lot, where there was a busy exhibition fair. The
natives of the reserve did everything.

– A feira era muito colorida. Eles vendiam rede para dormir, rede para pescar, cestos de palha, vasos de
cerâmica, esculturas entalhadas em madeira e muitas outras coisas lindas!

–The Market was very colorful. They sold sleeping nets, fishing nets, straw baskets, ceramic vases, wood
carved sculptures and many other beautiful things.

– Vamos meninas, se quiserem ir ao banheiro, esta é a hora. Deixaremos o carro aqui e seguiremos
caminhando, por uma trilha. – disse dona Jaci, mãe e Yara.

– Let´s go girls! If you want to go to the bathroom, this is the time.

– We´ll leave the car here and we´ll keep walking along a trail. – said Mrs. Jaci.

– Me ajudem com a mochila meninas. – pediu seu Caynã.

– Obedecemos imediatamente. Nosso entusiasmo era enorme.

– Help me with the backpacks girls! – said Mr. Caynã.

– Obey immediately. Our enthusiasm was huge!

A floresta sem céu

The forest without sky

– falta muito para chegar, dona jaci? – mais ou menos. Vamos caminhar uns cem metros mata a dentro,
depois atravessaremos o rio, caminharemos mais uns cem metros no sentido sul e então estaremos lá.

– missing much to get there, Mrs. Jaci? – More or less! Let´s walk a few hundred meters to inside, then
cross the river. We´ll walk another hundred meter and we´ll be there.

– Agora é importante ficarmos em silencio. Precisamos manter a respiração regular para não nos
cansarmos desnecessariamente. Além do mais, - continuou dona Jaci - a floresta continuará cada vez mais
densa. E apesar de oferecer tanta beleza, pode oferecer perigo aos desavisados.

– Now, it is important to be silent.

– We need to keep our regular breathing so we do not get tired unnecessarily.

– Besides, - continued Mrs. Jaci - the forest will grow denser and in spite of offering so much beauty, can
offer danger to the unsuspecting.

– Got it, - I answered a little frightened.

– Seguimos uma trilha estreita entre árvores gigantes que encobriam o céu. O céu havia desaparecido. A
trilha também.

– The sky had gone. The rail too.

– De vez em quando ele assoviava um assovio seguido de estalos que fazia com a boca. Eu achei
estranho, mas me mantive em silêncio.

– Every now and then, he whistled a short whistle followed by a crack in his mouth.

– I found it strang but I kept silent.

– Logo as árvores foram se espaçando. Foi mágico ver a luz do sol transpassando as folhas das árvores e
iluminar tudo ao nosso redor.

– Soon the trees were passing. It was magical to see the sunlight stream through the leaves of the trees
and lighten everything around us.

– Ouvi cantos de diferentes pássaros. Percebi que o assovio de seu Caynã estava sendo respondido.

– I heard songs from different birds. I realized that Mr. Caynã’s whistle was being answered.

– Ual! – exclamei perplexa. Tem um índio do outro lado do rio! – é meu sobrinho Bira. – esclareceu dona
Jaci.

– Ual! – I exclaimed perpexed. There’s an Indian on the other side of river.

– Venha Bira! Venha nos buscar! – gritava Yara. – o índio entrou na jangada e em poucos minutos já
estava do lado em que estávamos.

– Come on Bira! – shouted Yara. – Indian entered the raft and a few minutes arrived at the river that we
were.

O pássaro negro

The black bird

– Bira! Que saudades! - disse Yara. – eu também menininha. Então você trouxe sua amiga Júlia para
conhecer nossa aldeia. Fico feliz por isso! e você Júlia, está animada para conhecer nossa aldeia?

– I miss you Bira! – Yara said. Me too, my little girl. So, you brought your friend to visit our village! I´m
happy to that!

– Thank you Bira.

– E você Júlia, está animada para conhecer nossa aldeia? – sim! Mas como você sabe meu nome?

– Pela primeira vez vi as “ocas” casa dos índios que já havia visto nos livros da escolas. Elas ficavam em
círculos, eu contei doze. No centro, um grande pátio de chão batido e muito limpo.

The children

– Yara me deu as mãos e saiu correndo em direção as crianças que fizeram uma brincadeira de roda
enquanto cantavam uma cantiga em dialeto Tupi-Guarani.
– Yara gave me her hands and left running to Ward the children who played a joke while singing a song in
Tupi-Guarani dialect.
– Fizemos uma grande algazarra. Depois fomos para o riacho. Elas queriam me ensinar um pouco de
tudo. Uma criança foi escolhida para me ensinar a pescar a caçar, enquanto Yara me ensinaria algumas
palavras em Tupi-Guarani.

– We made a great commotion. Then we went to the creek. They wanted to teach me a little everything. A
child was chose to teach me how to fish, to hunt, while Yara would teach me some words in Tupi-Guarani.

– Lamentavelmente o fim de semana passou rápido demais.

– Nos despedimos com uma outra festa linda. E eu só pensava quando retornaria àquele lugar fantástico.

– Unfortunately the weekend went by too quickly. We say goodbye with another beautiful party. And I only
thought when I would return to that fantastic place.

– Levei para casa muitos presentes como um arco-e-flecha, colares e um amuleto feito de penas.

– Minha mãe nos aguardava no portão com um grande sorriso. Abracei minha amiga Yara e agradeci por
ela ter me presenteado com aquela grande aventura que ficará para sempre em meu coração.
