Italian officials have cut short the Venice Carnival as
they try to control what is now the worst outbreak of
the coronavirus in Europe.
Authorities in the Veneto region said the event
would end later on Sunday, two days earlier than
scheduled. Italy has by far the highest number of
coronavirus cases in Europe, with 152. Three people
have died. Italy has imposed strict quarantine
restrictions in two northern “hotspot” regions dose to
Milan and Venice.
About 50,000 people cannot enter or leave several
towns in Veneto and Lombardy for the next two weeks
without special permission. Even outside the zone,
many businesses and schools have suspended
activities, and sporting events have been cancelled.
The BBC’s Mark Lowen described the situation just
outside the zone. In neighbouring Austria, a train from
Venice was stopped at the Austrian border after it
emerged that two passengers had fever symptoms.
Austria’s Interior Minister Karl Nehammer later
confirmed to the BBC that the pair tested negative for
coronavirus.
"All authorities have acted quickly and with great
caution in this case," said Mr Nehammer in a
statement. "The reporting chain worked without
delay."
Elsewhere, authorities in South Korea and Iran are
battling to control rising numbers of infections. South
Korea has raised its coronavirus alert to the "highest
level".
The new strain of coronavirus, which originated last
year in Hubel province in China, causes a respiratory
disease called Covid-19. China has seen more than
76,000 infections and 2,442 deaths.
What is happening in Italy?
Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte announced on
Saturday that "extraordinary measures" would come
into force to try to stem the rising number of
coronavirus cases.
He said the quarantine restrictions could last for
weeks, Police, and if necessary the armed forces, will
have the authority to ensure me regulations are
enforced.
Angelo Borrelli, the head of Italy’s Civil Protection
Department, told reporters that 110 of the confirmed
cases were in Lombardy, with 21 in Veneto with others
in Emilia-Romagna and Lazio. Officials reported a third
death on Sunday, an elderly woman from the town of
Crema suffering from cancer. Italian officials say they
are still trying to trace the source of the outbreak.
Universities in Milan have been closed and the city’s
mayor, Giuseppe Sala, said schools would also close
their doors while the outbreak continued. “As a
precaution I think that the schools have to be closed in
Milan. I will propose to the president of the region to
enlarge the precaution to the entire metropolitan city
area. It is just a precaution, we don’t want to create
panic," he said.
Meanwhile Giorgio Armani’s fashion show,

captivated by stories of heroes facing off against
superhuman 15foes. But what specific rewards, needs,
wishes and dark dreams do supervillains satisfy?

Freedom: Superpowered characters enjoy
freedoms the rest of us don't. Nobody can arrest
Superman unless he lets them (at least not without
kryptonite handcuffs). As much time as supervillains
spend locked up, they seem to escape as often as they
please, to run unconstrained by rules and regulations.
Cosplayers who dress like 17Wonder Woman and
Captain America can't do any crazy thing that crosses
their minds without seeming to mock and insult our
heroes, whereas those dressed as villains get to go
wild. Supervillainy feels liberating.
Power: Maybe you envy the power these evil
characters 18wield. While that's also a reason to adore
superheroes, good guys don't ache to dominate.
Stories like Watchmen and Kingdom Come show how
heroes become 19menaces when they try to take over.
So when dreaming of superpowers, maybe you relate
to characters who dream of power as well, from the
Scarecrow (who controls individuals' fears) to Doctor
Doom (who's perpetually out to dominate the world).
Better villain than victim: Physiologically, anger
activates us and feels better than anxiety or fear. One
who feels victimized and cannot figure out constructive
ways to stand up, be strong or 20become heroic might
twist the need for self-assertion into destruction.
Alternately, a healthy person simply might focus on
how 21all characters assert themselves in any given
story.

Better villain equals better hero: A hero only
appears as heroic as the challenge he or she must
overcome. Great heroes require great villains. Without
supercriminals, the world's finest heroes seem like

When gritty details repulse us, exploring evil through
the filter of fiction can help us contemplate humanity's
worst without turning away or dwelling almost
voyeuristically on real human tragedy. Even when the
fiction is about improbable people doing impossible
things, the story's fantastic nature reassures us that
this cannot happen – and therefore we don't have to
turn away.
Supervillains' Ultimate Purpose
In the end, our interest in supervillains can be
healthy or unhealthy. Even the more maladaptive
reasons for such fascination tend to arise from
motivations that were originally healthy and natural –
frustrated drives that went the wrong way.
Remember, though, that superheroic fiction
ultimately begins and ends with the heroes. Comic
book writers and artists create supervillains, who move
in and out as guest stars and supporting cast, first and
foremost to reveal how heroic the comics' stars can be.

Certain myths are so pervasive that no matter
how many experts disprove them, they only seem to

appeal to parents worried for their young children. Tali
Sharot, a cognitive neuroscientist at University College
London, studies how our minds work and how we
process new information. In her upcoming book, The
Influential Mind, she explores why we ignore facts and
how we can get people to actually listen to the truth.
Tali shows that we’re open to new information
– but only if it confirms our existing beliefs. We find
ways to ignore facts that challenge our ideals. And as
neuroscientist Bahador Bahrami and colleagues have
found, we weigh all opinions as equally valid,
regardless of expertise.
So, having the data on your side is not always
enough. For better or for worse, Sharot says, emotions
may be the key to changing minds.
