1 DICAS DE LEITURA
Algumas tcnicas de leitura iro nos ajudar a ler um texto. Utilize-as e vero o quanto so teis. As principais tcnicas so: identificao de cognatos; palavras repetidas; pistas tipogrficas.
Ao utilizarmos as tcnicas, iremos ter uma idia geral do texto (general compreension) Cognatos Os cognatos so palavras muito parecidas com as palavras do Portugus. falsos cognatos, que veremos mais adiante. Alguns cognatos: school (escola), telephone (telefone), car (carro), question (questo, pergunta), activity (atividade), training (treinamento). Palavras repetidas As palavras repetidas em um texto possuem um valor muito importante. Um autor no repete as palavras em vo. Se elas so repetidas, porque so importantes dentro de texto. Muitas vezes para no repetir o mesmo termo, o autor utiliza sinnimos das mesmas palavras para no tornar o texto cansativo. Pistas tipogrficas As pistas tipogrficas so elementos visuais que nos auxiliam na compreenso do texto. Ateno com datas, nmeros, tabelas, grficas, figuras... So informaes tambm contidas no texto. Os recursos de escrita tambm so pistas tipogrficas. Por exemplo: ... (trs pontos) indicam a continuao de uma idia que no est ali exposta; negrito d destaque a algum termo ou palavra; itlico tambm destaca um termo, menos importante que o negrito; (aspas) salientam a importncia de alguma palavra; ( ) (parnteses) introduzem uma idia complementar ao texto.
General Comprehension A idia geral de um texto obtida com o emprego das tcnicas anteriores. Selecionando-se criteriosamente algumas palavras, termos e expresses no texto, poderemos chegar idia geral do texto. Por exemplo, vamos ler o texto a seguir e tentar obter a general comprehension deste pargrafo:

Mrs. Smiths phones the travel agency to get information about accommodation for their traveling to Barbados. Attendant : Barbados Travel Agency! Susan speaking. How may I help you? Mrs. Smiths : Good morning. Im going to Barbados in the summer on a holiday and hoping to spend sometimes in a seaside resort. Could you give me some information about accommodation? Attendant : My pleasure. The first thing to say is that if you want to stay in a hotel, youll need to make a reservation pretty soon. Have you got any definite date? Mrs. Smiths : Well. Well arrive in Barbados on 14th June. Well probably stay about a week. Attendant : I see. And do you want to stay in a hotel or a bungalow? Mrs. Smiths : A Hotel. Definitely, we dont need anything too luxurious just a private bathroom if possible. Attendant : How many people in the party? Mrs. Smiths : Just two. Attendant : Well. There are three hotels. O plural dos substantivos formado, em geral, acrescentando-se s ao singular: Coat Coats Hat Hats Se um substantivo singular terminar em ch, sh, o, s, x, z, forma-se o plural acrescentando - es: Class Church Box Wish Classes Churches Boxes Wishes
Potato potatoes Para formar o plural dos substantivos terminados em y precedidos de consoante, o y transformado em i, e acrescenta-se - es: Baby Babies Vocabulary Vocabularies Palavras como boys e days so regulares, pois o y precedido por vogal.

Certos substantivos tm um plural irregular. Alguns deles, terminados em f ou fe, fazem o plural retirando-se o f e acrescentando-se a terminao ves. Outros possuem forma prpria. Ateno: Apesar das letras Y e W soarem como vogais para ns, usa-se a (e no an) frente de palavras que comeam com essas letras. Veja estes exemplos: a woman ---> a young woman a year ---> an excellent year an architect ---> a wonderful architect Uma observao final: em portugus, no usamos muito um e uma para falar da profisso de algum. Dizemos apenas "Eu sou professora" ou "A Maria advogada". J no ingls, a e an sempre precedem a profisso de uma pessoa (como se estivssemos dizendo "Eu sou uma professora" ou "A Maria uma advogada"). Eu sou professor. I'm a teacher. A Maria advogada. Maria is a lawyer. Ele arquiteto. He's an architect.
