Landscape with the Fall of Icarus- William Carlos Williams, 1883 – 1963
The poem is a paraphrase with the painting "Landscape with the Fall of Icarus" by the Greek artist
Brueghel. According to the myth, Italo, son of Daedalus fled from the prison with the fragile wings
that his father made. Without listening to his father's advice to stay away from the sea and avoid
flying near the sun, the boy flew to the sun that melted his wings. Icarus was cast into the sea and
died. It is a narrative text, in third person, that tells a story. The text is written in free verse and has
no punctuation or capitalization. The tone of the poem begins with joy until the realization that
Icarus is going to die. Then the reader feels the darkest and most depressing reality of death.
Thematically, the poem concerns a lack of awareness of the problems of others when a person's life
is going well. The pain and tragedy of a person can go unnoticed to the rest of the world.
