Working Report 2003-75
Heikki Sutinen
December 2003
ABSTRACT
Ground-penetrating radar sounding was carried out on the investigation trench TK4 and
TK7 at Olkiluoto area in October and November 2003. The aim of this research was to
produce information from fracturing of the bedrock's surface parts.
SIR-2000 ground-penetrating radar equipment with 200 MHz, 150 MHz and 40 MHz
antennae were used in this survey. Data were continuously registered to the radar hard
disk. Information of geographical positioning was attached to the GPR data file scans.
The higher frequency antennas were used to get better resolution and the lower for the
better penetration depth. The total length of the trench was 918 meters. The measuring
time varied from 250 ns to 500 ns in different antennas. The maximum penetration
depth was only 10 meters with 40 MHz antenna in granite/granite gneiss area. In mica
gneiss area the penetration depth was nonexistent because of the high content of
conductive minerals in fracture fillings. The average dielectric value 6.0 for the rock
was used in interpretations.
The most powerful reflections from fractures were horizontal. Other reflections came
from irregular crossing and diverging fractures and single vertical fractures. From
attenuated area it was impossible to observe reflection even if it was obvious that there
were fracturing.

APPENDICES
The ground penetrating radar (GPR) survey was done from the cleaned rock surface.
The covering till was removed earlier. There were plenty of water puddles in both
survey trenches TK4 and TK7. Some of them were managed to drain with pumps. The
GPR survey was done on foot. Iron pegs were mounted previously to the rock surface
for positioning by Prismarit Oy. The position of pegs was marked to the GPR profile for
accurate horizontal scaling and elevation correction. The survey trench was 1035 meters
long (Fig. 1). Because of the biggest water puddles and collapsing walls of the TK4,
there was left 918 meters of survey trench that could be measured.
SIR-2000 ground-penetrating radar equipment with 200 MHz (shielded), 150 MHz
(unshielded) and 40 MHz (unshielded) antennae were used (Appendices 1-4). SIR 2000
radar unit and 200 MHz antenna (model 5106) are manufactured by GSSI, Geological
Survey System Incorporated and 150 MHz and 40 MHz antennas by Radarteam
Sweden. With 200 MHz antenna also survey wheel was used to get constant amount of
scans per meters. The probing data were continuously registered on the radar's hard
disk. The 150 MHz antenna were used to replace 200 MHz antenna in very difficult and
rough places.
Set up parameters for 200 MHz antenna were 250 ns for measuring time, 18 scans per
meter, 16 bit sample type, 512 samples per scan.
Set up parameters for 150 MHz antenna were 320 ns for measuring time, 24 scans per
second (rescaled 15 scans per meters), 16 bit sample type, 512 samples per scan.
Set up parameters for 40 MHz antenna were 500 ns for measuring time, 24 scans per
second (rescaled 15 scans per meters), 16 bit sample type, 1024 samples per scan.
All survey data (in GSSI format) are assigned to Posiva with descriptions in this report.

2. DATA INTERPRETATION
The positioning files were prepared in Excel and they were attached to GPR scans using
the data coordinate processing features in Haescan Pro for Windows 1.1. Rescaling the
files with position information allowed making horizontal scaling and elevation
correction to the radar profile. After that each interpreted dot has it's own location
information.
Before interpretation some file processing was done to reduce flat-lying ringing and
high frequency noise. These were background removal, vertical high pass and low pass
filtering. Also signal amplification was done to increase gain and compensate amplitude
reduction because of filtering. All interpreted data files are attached to this report
(Appendices 5-28). The GPR data is printed in several profiles due to interruption in
measurement because of the water puddles.
The horizontal fractures were interpreted as line segments and vertical fractures with
separate marks. Horizontal fractures are marked as code number 40 and vertical
fractures as code number 60. The depth scale was determined using the constant
dielectric value 6.0.
After interpretations the radar profile was printed out in jpg-format and the
interpretation data was converted as text format files, which are attached to this report
(Appendices 29-37). If the same fracture is interpreted in two radar profile, only the
higher frequency anenna interpretation data is converted to text file. The interpretation
formula is IDQCEXYZ. These keys give the following information:
I Counting number
D Depth of the interface (meters)
Q Quality number
1 =clear interface
2 = obvious interface
3 = weak interface
c Code number (40, 60)

3. RESULTS
The total length of the survey line is 918 m. The survey trench between P24 and P79
was measured with 150 MHz and 40 MHz antennas because the conditions were too
rough to pull the 200 MHz antenna. Other areas were measured with 200 MHz and 40
MHz antennas. The profiles are printed from the north to the south in TK4 and from the
west to the east in TK7.
No reference drillings or CMP soundings were obtained in this study to define the exact
dielectric value for the rock. In granite it varies usually from the 5 to 7 and in gneiss
from 8 to 15. In mica gneiss radar got very few reflections and when the most of the
reflections come from granite rock it was applicable to interpret all interfaces using
dielectric value of 6.
The radar pulse attenuation was high in both survey trenches. The maximum penetration
depth for 200 MHz and 150 MHz antennas was about 8 meters and 10 meters for 40
MHz antenna. Mainly the penetration depth was 0-4 meters. The best penetration was
achieved in P39-P45 in survey trench TK4 and P13-P16 and P22-P25 in survey trench
TK7. These areas comprise also granite in addition to mica gneiss and mica gneiss
micmatite according to the results of rock mapping done by Paulamaki (in prep.) in the
same survey trench. In the mica gneiss area the radar pulse attenuates probably because
of conductive minerals. These minerals are clay minerals and graphite, which are
present as fracture fillings in intensively fractured areas. Also these minerals increase
the electrical permittivity of the mica gneiss. Normally unfractured gneiss with no
graphite is non- conductive (dielectric value 2::8, electrical conductivity 3,3x10-\dry)-
1,5x10-5 (wet) S/m). Therefore it could be assumed that the surface of the mica gneiss is
weathered.
Some reflections from fractures are horizontal. The amplitude of these reflection are
more powerful comparing to other reflections which come from irregular crossing and
diverging fractures. Prominent single vertical fracture reflections also exist.
All GPR profiles and interpretation files are attached to this report in numeric form.
Different colors on all interpreted interfaces signify the quality. Clear interface is red,
obvious interface is pink and weak interface is drawn as white line. The quality number
also indicate the dimension and the water content of the fracture as with red colour
interpreted fracture is the biggest and contains more water.
6
4.SUMMARY
Despite of radar pulse attenuation the probing data produces evidence for broken
surface part of the mica gneiss. In granite area it was permitted information from
horizontal as well as diverging and crossing fractures. It must be observed that there is
no basis to make conclusion about the entireness of the bedrock below the last and
deepest fracture reflection because it is near the border of the GPR pulse maximum
penetration.
