quietude".
Com amor,
Chagdud Khadro
Dear Chagdud Gonpa sangha and friends,
Warmest greetings from Khadro Ling where, after a sequence of stressful and hard
decisions, we have established the isolation of our sangha community and protocols for
preventing illness. Thinking back ten days ago, when four of us were outside of Brazil
and trying to return just ahead of flight cancellations and airport closures; when
visitors were at first restricted and then not allowed to come at all; when our valued
employees were discussing options and then told by the regional authorities not to come
to work; when two construction projects were suddenly shut down leaving huge holes in
the ground; when all events were postponed indefinitely--all of this now seems like a
kaleidoscopic journey through a very strange bardo. Normalcy vanished like a mirage.
Khadro Ling truly became a gompa, which in Tibetan means "a quiet place."
Now that the urgent demands have decreased, our sangha--both the residents and
practitioners joining online--has be able to sit down during extended formal sessions,
and to meditate in a way that is unhurried and deep. The truth of the dharma resonates
in powerful and specific ways to the turbulence caused by this epidemic of illness,
confusion, and sorrow. Having contemplated the preciousness of our human rebirths,
we know that our lives do not become less meaningful when outer circumstances
change. Having contemplated impermanence and death, we are not surprised at the
instability of conditioned existence. Having found refuge in the Three Jewels, we feel
protected as we recognize and relinquish our own harmful tendencies. Having entered
the Bodhisattvas path, each moment, even the most difficult, offers an opportunity to
bring forth our pure qualities from the spaciousness of our natural mind. We find
instruction and courage in the examples of great masters, including our own
teachers, who have experienced extreme hardships yet remained unwavering in their
intention to benefit.
Chagdud Tulku Rinpoche used to say, "Now is the best time." I would contradict him,
"It can't be. So much is going wrong." He would insist, "Now is the best time." Now I
understand. Now the best time because it is the time that we have, the moment in
countless rebirths in which we have the capability and methods and blessings to access
the undiminished wealth of the sky treasury of dharma. When I summon memories of his
warmth and meditate according to his instructions, his kindness and wisdom infuse my
mind. I wish only to offer the same to others.
So now, the best time, I strongly urge you to pray, to practice, and to make aspirations,
using the methods that most inspire your confidence. Then offer your dedications from
your heart, holding nothing back. In the moment of peace that will follow, you have
changed the interdependence for all beings. May they be well. May you be well, and
safe, and courageous, and satisfied on a deep level with your accomplishment of the
truth of the sacred Buddha dharma.
With love,
Chagdud Khadro
