Mechanical coffee harvesting in São Paulo has spread across the
producing regions due to the shortage and high cost of labor
Coffee farming has consolidated in various regions across São Paulo. Like in the rest of the Coun-
try, it is also the shortage and the high cost of labor that has led the growers to use mechanization
systems. The use of equipment in the different stages of the coffee plantations in São Paulo
is rather significant in most holdings. A study by the Agricultural Economy Ins-
titute (IEA), an organ of the São Paulo State Secretariat of Agriculture and
Supply, shows that mechanical harvesters, self-propelled machines and
hauling equipment have become quite popular throughout the State.
The work was conducted by the entity’s researcher, agronomic en-
gineer Celso Vegro, jointly with his colleagues Vera Lúcia Fer-
raz dos Santos Francisco, who graduated in statistics and ma-
thematician José Alberto Ângelo. These data were published
in May 2011 in the Economic Information magazine.
Upon analyzing a sample of 610 productive units,
in the 2010/11 crop year, the authors concluded that
43.72% of the fields were harvested mechanically, par-
ticularly in Alta Mogiana, a major coffee growing re-
gion, where it was 54.70%. Mechanical harvesters are
very popular, as they can be used in rough terrain and
steep declivity areas.
The authors take it that mechanization was adop-
ted for cost reduction purposes, as manual labor costs
have risen considerably, and such labor is frequently
not available in the region and has to be imported
from other states. One of the conclusions drawn by
the IEA study is that mechanized harvesting turns
out to be less costly than manual harvesting. The
only exception detected by the authors is related to
the costs incurred by the mechanical harvesters in
areas where yields exceed 90 sacks per hectare.
The survey was also concerned with the num-
ber of equipment devices used in every surveyed
holding, making no distinction between owned or
leased equipment. This gave the authors the chance
to roughly estimate the daily expenses saved through
the use of mechanization. Some hypotheses were as-
certained: Mechanical harvesters, requiring two ope-
rators, do the work of six people; the hauling harvester,
which requires four operators, replaces 60 employees,
and the self-propelled harvester, operated by three per-
sons, does the work of 75 people.
The IEA estimated that, from June to August 2010,
the daily pay for the manual workers was R$ 30. Therefo-
re, the projections for the expenditure of the coffee farmers
that switched to mechanical harvesters, reached nearly R$
20 million, while the amounts saved in daily wages exce-
eded R$ 35 million. The same basic data indicated that, in
June 2010, operators were paid monthly wages of R$ 800.
As there were 5,008 employees operating mechanical harves-
ters, the growers had to shell out around R$ 12 million, saving
upwards of R$ 55 million in daily wages, due to the replace-
ment of the coffee pickers with machines.

In Bahia, conilon is produced on the
coastal region and celebrates the
highest productivity rates in Brazil,
outstripping the leading coffee bean
producer, the State of Espírito Santo
Bahia registers the highest productivity rates of all Brazilian coffee fields.
The highlight is the Cerrado region, in the west, where Arabica coffee predo-
minates, and the border line is the Atlantic Ocean, which comprises a huge
area along the coast, where robusta is predominantly cultivated. This varie-
ty, according to an estimate by the National Supply Company (Conab), in
its May 2011 survey, should reach 29.11 sacks per hectare in the 2011 crop
year. In Espírito Santo, for example, leading national producer, accounting
for 70% of all conilon fields cultivated in the Country, yields should remain
at 22.58 sacks per hectare.
The conilon region in Bahia, which owes its beginning to settlers coming
from Espírito Santo, is now home to 25 thousand hectares in full production,
while another 3.146 thousand hectares are in the development stage, predo-
minantly dryland coffee farms. The total volume to be harvested in the 2011
crop is estimated at 726 thousand milled coffee sacks, compared to 564.8 thou-
sand sacks the previous year, representing a 28.5-percent rise. The expressive
increase in planted area is in line with the expansion of the coffee farming park,
stimulated by the good prices fetched by the crop, along with the occurrence of
timely blossoming.
According to data released by the State Secretariat of Agriculture, Irrigation
and Land Reform, the Atlantic region has the potential to expand its production
volumes to 900 thousand sacks of milled coffee due to its good regional infrastruc-
ture and timely rainfalls. At least half of the coffee park went through a renewal
process. Other relevant advantages of the area include its proximity to the consu-
mer centers and to the ports of Ilhéus (BA) and Vitória (ES).
The president of the Association of Coffee Producers of Bahia (Assocafé), João
Lopes Araújo, reckons that there are approximately 15 thousand coffee farmers in
the State. The entity is soon to conduct a diagnosis of the activity. The last survey
was conducted in 2000. Back then, 12 thousand farmers were devoted to coffee far-
ming. Of the total number of producers, Araújo maintains that only 1.5 thousand
fall into the commercial producers’ category. All others cultivate small or medium-sized
areas, the vast majority of them run by small-scale farmers, also known as family farming
operations. “The small-scale farmers raise chicken, cows, grow cassava, but for their cash needs
they grow coffee”, he clarifies.

Coffee growers in Rondônia are
learning in practice
the best manner to conduct
their conilon fields and
improve their yields
The coffee growers in Rondônia are being guided as to the best man-
ner to conduct their fields, a move that is expected to result into higher
yields per hectare. The State has to put up with one of the lowest produc-
tivity rates per hectare in the entire Country, estimated at 10.49 sacks
of conilon per hectare in the 2011 crop year. The State of Espírito Santo,
the leader of this variety of coffee, is expected to harvest 24.18 sacks per
hectare, on average.
To change this reality, The State Secretariat of Agriculture, Livesto-
ck and Land Regulation (Seagri) is now putting into practice the Sys-
tem Units Program for the Conduction of Coffee Fields. In pre-elected
locations, the producers take part in activities that comprise the follo-
wing phases: pruning, sucker killing, harvesting, drying and bean sa-
les. In other observation units, information is passed on field irrigation
systems and on the adjustment of the entire process to the amount of
water available in the region.
In the meantime, while the seeds are planted and the fruits they
produce have not been reaped, the State continuous putting up with
the losses. Climate problems have significantly affected the coffee fields
in Rondônia and the results of the 2011 crop will certainly bring no
smiles to the growers. According to a survey conducted by the Natio-
nal Supply Company (Conab), of May 2011, the production volume is
not to surpass 1.624 million sacks of milled coffee, down 31.4% from
the previous year.
Seagri technician Milton Messias dos Santos believes in an even big-
ger reduction, something between 40% and 45%. He estimates the total
volume at approximately 1.400 million sacks of milled coffee. The culprit
of the low performance was the shortage of water. Santos explains that
during the flowering period, from June to August 2010, rainfalls were be-
low normal in that part of the State. “Irrigation would be the solution”, he
stresses. Nonetheless, the technology is scarcely used in Rondônia.

O objetivo é valorizar a
a Norte do País.
do zero”, enfatiza.
As demais regiões

The Brazilian Association of Coffee Producing Regions (Abop Café) was created
in April 2011, and it represents the coffee growers. The goal is to value the diversity of
flavors, qualities and stories that compose the scenario of the activity from the South to
the North of the Country. The association is presided over by José Augusto Rizental, who
also serves as superintendent of the Federation of Cerrado Coffee Growers. He explains
that, jointly with the national Brazilian Service of Support to Micro and Small Com-
panies (Sebrae), a pioneer initiative will be conducted with the aim to show how coffee
farming functions in Brazil. “We will have to start from scratch”, he emphasizes.
The first step is the creation of a database featuring images of every different region,
for the confection of folders, and the production of videos. A map of the entire coffee park in
Brazil is also a priority. According to Rizental, the work by Abop Café will be carried out in
constructive manner, lending support to the farmers that produce quality beans, which are
exported, providing them with the chance to expand their sales in the domestic market, too.
Of the 12 coffee producing regions in Brazil, eight have joined the new association. They are
as follows: South Minas, Cerrado de Minas, Mogiana, Center-West of São Paulo, Montanhas do
Espírito Santo, Norte Pioneiro do Paraná, Planalto da Bahia and Cerrado da Bahia. The other coffee
producing regions throughout the Country, which were also invited to join, are as follows: Chapada de
Minas, Matas de Minas, Conilon Capixaba and Rondônia.

le has to do with the lack of crop planning. “Many
farmers do not get organized in order to carry out
every step in accordance with the fruit maturing
process”, he notes.
The researcher explains that if harvest is
done before the ideal time, it will result into
a huge amount of green berries and into a
beverage of poor quality, referred to as bold
coffee. If harvest is delayed, there will be big
amounts of dry beans. In this case, if it is a
region where humidity prevails, the beans
might start fermenting while still on the tree
and fall down. “The ideal harvesting point is
characterized by the maturity of most fruit, in
a cheery-like state”, he explains.
It is in this maturing stage that the beans

Another deficiency occurs in the post-harvest stage, and it happens
when the warehousing structure is too small to accommodate the crop.
According to Giomo, the lack of space for drying the product is very
common. When this occurs, producers tend to resort to thick layers
of beans, which, in turn, could create fermentation problems. “The
terrain is the main infrastructure on the farm, and it provides ideal
drying conditions, an important factor for ensuring the quality of the
product”, he notes.

Besides identifying greenhouse gas
emissions from coffee plantations, study
ascertains how much carbon is fixed in
the activity and how to improve this equation
The diagnosis by the Inventory of Greenhouse Gas Emissions (GEE) in Coffee Farming reaches
relevant conclusions on measures able to minimize the environmental impact and the production
chain’s share in global warming. The coordinator of the study and researcher with the Center for
Nuclear Energy in Agriculture of the University of São Paulo (Cena/USP), Carlos Clemente
Cerri, maintains that if it comes to reducing gas emissions in coffee farming, like nitrous oxide
(N2O), adjustments in the production system will have to be implemented.
A way out could be the use of fertilizers with inhibitors. “It is the case of inputs with urease
inhibitors (enzyme that decomposes urea into ammonia), nitrification (process that creates nitri-
tes through nitrobacteria action) and denitrification (a process that produces nitrogen gas from
substances under the action of bacteria), he explains.
Cerri takes it that the diagnosis makes it clear that technicians and producers should adjust
the doses, the sources and the manner the input is applied. A solution could come from the
coffee plantations in South Minas Gerais, where organo-mineral fertilizers are lushly applied,
because they lower costs, boost yields and reduce gas emissions. “The use of more efficient
machinery and energy sources is also a factor”, he adds.
The measures capable of minimizing greenhouse gas emissions in the production of
coffee could also include shade coffee plantations where the plants grow under the canopy
of shade trees planted within the rows and/or protected by windbreaks. These practices
could immobilize the CO2 of the atmosphere by fixing the carbon in the trees. The use of
the timber for manufacturing furniture in civil construction arrests the carbon dioxide,
eliminating the production of gas.
The ever-soaring use of machinery for cultural practices and transport purposes also
increase the amount of fossil fuels burned in these operations. In this case, researchers
recommend their replacement with ethanol powered engines, a move that could reduce
greenhouse gas emissions by up to 70% on the farm. “Ethanol is viewed as a neutral fuel,
since the gas produced by the raw material is compensated by the low emission rates in its
fuel state”, Cerri explains.
CARBON In the second stage in the Field experiments of the Inventory of Gree-
nhouse Gas Emissions (GEE) in Coffee Farming, developed by Cena/USP, under support
from illycaffè, a coffee company, two factors that complete the equation that determines the
Gee index will be included. The study is set to measure the soil and biomass carbon levels to
identify the fixed amount. “The first results identified the volume, but now we are going to
show how much is sequestered for achieving a net result” explains Carlos Clemente Cerri,
coordinator of the study.
At the end, the research will show the total volume of gases, except the fixed carbon, with
a real result. The comparisons are conducted between coffee plantations, native forests – in
the past cut down for the establishment of fields – and pasturelands, currently replaced by
coffee fields. In this case, the changes in carbon stocks are compared. The field experiments are
now in their counting phase in the labs and are used as subjects for PhD and Master Degree
theses in universities, which, in turn, will furnish an important base for the research works,
along with recommendations to the production chains on how to minimize the impact of the crop
on global warming.
“From these results we will learn about the amount of gas emissions and sequestered carbon, which
will play a relevant role in the process of coming up with formulas for equating yields, production volu-
mes and sustainability of coffee farming in Minas Gerais and, later, in Brazil”, Cerri notes. The researcher
understands that on the grounds of such research works it might make carbon fixation possible in other areas of
the production cycle, leading Brazil to achieve a stage in which coffee is produced at zero carbon levels, quite a good
chance for turning it into a distinct reference in global coffee farming. The calculations are not to stop at this sampling
operation and are likely to reach other areas in the production chain, like processing, for example. The results of the second phase
of the study are due to be published by August 2011.

The varieties launched by
IAC are Tupi RN IAC 1669-

IAC 4739. The researcher
points out that two of them,
Tupi and Obatã Amarelo,
are resistant to rust, a ma-
jor coffee tree disease. This
genetic trait could reduce
by 10% the use of agroche-
micals, resulting into smal-
ler production cost and lo-
wer environmental impact.
The Tupy cultivar is also
resistant to the Meloidogyne
exígua nematode, the most
disseminated strain in the na-
tional production hubs, turning
it into an important alternative
for the coffee growers.
Average productivity rates of the
cultivars range from 40 to 60 sacks of
processed coffee per hectare in irrigated areas,
for which there are particularly recommended. In
the non-irrigated regions, the yield reaches from 30 to 35
sacks per hectare. Guerreiro Filho maintains that 75% of the national
choice Free
production is Arabica coffee, of which, 45% come from the Catuaí variety
and 35%, Mundo Novo, launched in the 1970s and 1950s, respectively.
“Although growers continue very traditional in their choice of the
plants, research centers always launch varieties more and more adapted to
the agronomic and climatic characteristics of the regions, identified throu-
gh demands from the industry and from the consumers”, the researcher
explains. The adoption of a variety, he says, is slow and gradual. “Growers
plant a small area as a trial field, and expand the plantations according to
the results of the first crops and the quality of the beverage is also a factor”.
IAC is registering three new DISTINCTIONS Because of their small size, the IAC culti-
vars facilitate the harvesting operations, reduce labor costs and allow for

O pesquisador aconselha o cafeicultor a estudar bem as possi-

Uphill Paraíso Cultivar,developed by
Epamig,requires fewer chemical
applications and is recommended
for highland coffee farms
Resistance to rust and nematodes, high yield and excellent be-
verage quality are some of the characteristics of the Paraíso cultivar
(MGH 419-1), developed by the Agricultural Research Corpora-
tion of Minas Gerais (Epamig) for hilly areas. Very common in
small-scale farms and family farming operations, highland coffee
farming is influenced by such limitations as mild climate condi-
tions and steep terrain, which make mechanization very difficult.
In such environments most cultural practices are carried out by fa-
mily labor. Adapted to the mild climate conditions in the highlan-
ds, the Paraíso cultivar owes its success to its resistance to rust – a
major coffee plant disease – and to nematodes, as there is no need
for many manual chemical applications.
Its resistance to nematodes also makes it appropriate for area
renewal purposes. Furthermore, because of its small size no big
spacing between rows and plants is needed, leading to good use
of the area. Researcher Antonio Alves Pereira, of Epamig Zona da
Mata, maintains that in several regions across Minas Gerais the
cultivar boasts high vigorous vegetative Power and productivity
rates that exceed traditional varieties.
In an Experimental Farm located in Machado, region where
average annual temperatures remain below 18°C, the cultivar has
proved very efficient, a fact that is repeated in regions with higher
temperatures. According to Pereira, assessments carried out at
Epamig’s Experimental Farm in São Sebastião do Paraíso (MG)
attested to the higher-than-normal yield of this cultivar, with 61.1
sacks per hectare, on average, in eight consecutive harvests.
Nevertheless, he warns that the initial development stage of this
variety is low compared to the Catuaí cultivar. The researcher recom-
mends the coffee farmers to carefully evaluate the possible consequen-
ces, either bad or good, before introducing a new variety in their farm.
“The recommendation is for starting with small stretches of the new
cultivars before doing huge plantations. After three or four crops, the re-
sults should be evaluated in order to identify the cultivars that Best adap-
ted to the specific reality”, he notes.
Paraíso is a cultivar that requires special attention at planting time. The
recommendation is for using certified seed, purchased from acknowledged insti-
tutions, so as to guarantee genetic purity. Soil correction and fertilization, based on
careful analysis, are also a requirement. Sidedressing fertilization should also be based
on soil analysis, preferably with the associated use of organic matter.

Production at coffee industries went up 4% from November 2009
to October 2010, keeping pace with soaring consumption
Propped up by soaring consumption over the past years, the Brazilian coffee industry is making investments to keep in line with this
upward trend, both qualitatively and quantitatively. The sector comprises 1,222 coffee roasting industries, most of them small companies,
and a total of upwards of 2 thousand brands, and supplied the market with a volume of 19.1 million sacks from November 2009 to October
2010. The performance is up 4.03% from the same period last year, according to data released by the Brazilian
Coffee Industry Association (Abic).
For the next two years, the entity expects the production volumes to rise 5% a year, re-
aching 21 million sacks in 2012. In terms of revenue, sales of industrialized coffee
amounted to R$ 7 billion in 2010 and, in the current year, revenues from
coffee sales are estimated at R$ 7.5 billion.
Investments in the area, particularly by the big companies,
which are in pursuit of concentration, reach about R$ 80
million a year in infrastructure, machinery and manufac-
turing plants. Investments in marketing and publicity
amount to around R$ 50 million, driving the sales of the
best known brands. New options of special coffees are
also launched on a monthly basis to meet the needs of
this specific segment, which presents higher growth
rates (from 15% to 20% a year).
With regard to the markets, the Brazilian indus-
try basically supplies the domestic consumers, while
foreign sales involve green coffee beans. Nevertheless,
industrialized coffees (roasted beans, roasted and
ground coffee – all Brazilian brands) have been ex-
ported regularly since 2002, when Abic and the Bra-
zilian Investments and Export Promotion Agency
(Apex-Brasil) entered into an Integrated Sectorial
Project (PSI) agreement.
The values in this market initiative jum-
ped from US$ 2 million to upwards of US$ 30
million, in spite of a minor setback stemming from
the global financial downturn and the recent un-
favorable exchange rate fluctuations. In the long
run, the expectation is for this share to go up,
through the already recommended course of high
quality and value added products.

Good
choice
The number of coffee aficionados in Brazil has been rising in all age groups. It has always been
high among over 36 year olds, but it is now rising considerably among younger people. The confir-
mation comes through a survey conducted since 2003 by the Brazilian Coffee Industry Association
(Abic) jointly with the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Supply (Mapa).
In 2010, the survey, known as Coffee Consumption Trends, interviewed 1,680 over 15 year
old people in 19 municipalities across all regions in Brazil. In the up to 19 year old age group,
the number of those who regularly drink coffee went up from 85% to 91% over this eight-year
period. In the intermediate age groups (19 to 26 years and from 27 to 35 years) there were similar
advances and, at the other extreme (36 years or more), where coffee was consumed by 96%, the
proportion of coffee consumers reached 98%.
In the view of Roberto Silva, director of Mapa’s Coffee Division, “Coffee has become fashio-
nable and the young are following in their parents’ footsteps and are beginning to like coffee, too”.
Abic, in turn, credits the publication of scientific studies, which attest to the health benefits of
coffee, with the soaring consumption of the beverage among young people. Other factors include
the variety of coffee recipes offered by coffee houses, combinations including vaporized milk, cho-
colate juice, Chantilly and even ice-cream.
The benefits from regular consumption are well known by 50% of the interviewees, while 70% of
them pointed to its characteristic of cheering people up. Memory and concentration improvement was
mentioned by 30% of the interviewees. “Consumption is associated with positive sensations and is also
credited with good humor, for example. This is the result of all publicity campaigns equating coffee and
health, whose goal is to point out the benefits from daily and moderate consumption of coffee”, comments

no Brasil e no mundo.
Há quatro anos, deu início ao primeiro

PROFILE
Introduced to the world of coffee by her husband, Sílvio Leite,
whose life is deeply intertwined with this crop, seven years ago, Sil-
vana Leite decided to dive into the world of specialty and gourmet
coffees and created the BBC Café Gourmet company, in Salvador
(BA). At the moment, she is responsible for the special bean brands
BBC Café Gourmet, Sweet Bahia Café and Agricafé, focusing on
blends created by her husband with the finest beans produced in
Brazil. Silvana’s tutor was Silvia Magalhães, three times winner
in the Brazilian baristas contests.
The project started at Loja Select do Posto Novo Bairro, lo-
cated in the district of Itaigara, where a coffeehouse was built
for serving the finest coffee-based beverages. Silvana started to
follow all barista contests throughout Brazil and kept in touch
with the most experienced professionals of the sector at national
and international level, while keeping an eye towards the logis-
tics of the courses. Furthermore, she is also involved with the ins-
tallation of coffeehouses, the preparation of drinks, qualification
of employees and she supplies one of the most cherished blends in
Bahia and the world.
Four years ago, she staged the first Barista Contest in the Nor-
theast, which is now being held on a yearly basis. In these contests,
the most renowned professionals of the coffeehouses in the capital
city of Bahia are evaluated by a panel of judges, who consider such
variables as the most efficient manner to prepare the drink, the
way it is served and the manner the contesters deal with the coffee
serving scenario. Silvana is a reference in the sector’s scenario in
Bahia. Devoted to the ever-evolving segment of specialty coffees
throughout the world, she was entrusted by the Brazilian Coffee
and Barista Association (ACBB) with the responsibility to issue
barista certifications in the Northeast.
