RES UMO

babilidade. As lagartas doentes deixam de se alimentar.

PATHOGENICITY OF Bacillus thuringiensis BERLINER
AGAINST THE RUB8ER LEAF CATERPILLAR
(Erinnyis e llo L.) (LEPIDOPTERA ; SPHINGIDAE) .
Due lo the success over the lasl 20 years of the crystal-forming bac-
teria against more than 137 insect species from the orders Lepidoptera,
Hymenoptera, Diptera and Coleoptera (1), an explorative laboratory lest
was carried oul with Bacillus thuringiensis Berliner to determine its
pathogenicity against E. ello. The experiment consisted of four concen-
tration treatments together with a control, with four replicates of each.
Catterpillars were collected from a rubber estale and kept at rest for one
day in the laboratory. Five caterpillars of the 3rd instar were placed in
deep eulture dishes (14 Cm diameler, 5 em high) with lhe inside of their
loose fitting lids covered with moistened filler paper. Two eulture dishes
were used for each replica te. The test eaterpillars reeeived for 1 day
air-dried young fully expanded rubber leaves previously dipped in the
various spore solutions of B. thuringiensis (Dipel (wettable powder),
Abbott Labs). From the second day onwards ali caterpillars were fed on
undipped rubber leaves . Mortality (%) was calculated I, 3, 5 and 7 days
after the start of the treatment. At the end of 7 days the air-dried faeces
(11% moislure) were weighed to determine relative food consumption.
Mortalily and faeces weight for the differenl treatments are shown in
Table 1. Although mortality increased in relation to lime and spore eon-
centralion, a 100% kill was nol achieved in any of lhe treatments. The
unexpecledly high morlalily among the control calerpillars is attributed
lo poor handling techniques . The differences in faeces weight, signif-
canl ai the 1% levei, show Ihat lhe bacleria caused the caterpillars lo
stop ealing.
