ABSTRACT: Traditional irrigation systems do not control locally the availability of soil water and
this can lead to errors of irrigation frequency. Commercial irrigation controllers with predefined
parameters of timing and water flow do not consider the specific water needs throughout the plant
growth cycle. The insufficient or excessive amount of water may cause irreversible damage to the
plantation development. Control systems with fuzzy logic are suggested to optimize irrigation due to
the nonlinear nature of this problem and the multivariable context of irrigation processes. This work
presents the development of a fuzzy system to determine dynamically the soil moisture reference of an
irrigation control system. The results obtained with the programming toolbox SIMULINK® have
shown that the soil moisture reference profile follows climatic variations and watering needs of the
soil-plant set defined in each test scenario.
