realizadas caracterizações via MFA e Perfilômetro, dependendo do tamanho dos
cristalitos.
Visualmente as superfícies apresentam características
introdução do texto.
ambientes poli-cristalinos.

Functional characterization of genes related to celulose synthesis in rice (Oryza
sativa L.) and their possible relation to cold tolerance
Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is one of the most important staple crops in economic, social and
scientific levels. Low temperatures affect the physiological status of rice plants, being
a limiting factor for the establishment and development of rice seedlings during
germination, vegetative growth and seed setting stages. To identify and characterize
novel genes involved in cold tolerance during the germination and vegetative stages,
our group evaluated closely related indica rice genotypes with different levels of cold
tolerance, using RNA-seq and RT-qPCR. Gene expression analyses were performed
using public data deposited in the database Genevestigator. For evaluations during
germination, seeds were germinated in distilled water at 28 °C (control condition, 2
days) and 13 °C (cold treatment, 7 days). Different exposure times to treatments
were necessary to ensure that coleoptiles reached the same developmental stage.
For analyses in young plants, seeds were germinated and seedlings were grown at 28
°C until they reached three to four leaves and then transferred to a cold room (10 °C).
Shoots were harvested for RNA extraction before (control) and after 6 hours of cold
exposure. Results indicate that the different levels of cold tolerance may be related
to expression levels of cell wall synthesis genes. Among them, genes present in the
cellulose synthase complex and companion cellulose synthase proteins were
associated with the cold tolerant genotype. Since cellulose is the most abundant
component in primary cell wall in plants, and the cell wall is a key determinant of plant
cell morphology, cell wall structure maintenance or modification might be important
to withstand stressful conditions. Due to the scarce information about the changes in
the structure of cell wall under stress and control conditions, we are going to analyze
mutant plants that lack functional copies of cellulose synthase genes, aiming to
understand the function of these genes in the formation of the wall and how they
behave under stress.

Dead time effects in x-ray spectra taken with a Digital Pulse Processor (DPP) and a
Silicon Drift Detector (SDD) were investigated when the number of events at the low-
energy end of the spectrum was more than half of the total, at counting rates up to
56 kHz. It was found that dead-time losses in the spectra are energy dependent and
an analytical correction for this effect, which takes into account pulse pile-up, is
proposed. This and the usual models have been applied to experimental
measurements, evaluating the dead time fraction either from the calculations or using
the value given by the detector acquisition system. Results show that the dead-time
correction based on this DPP value is poorer than that provided by the standard model
using quantities deduced from DPP settings and the acquired spectrum. The latter
method, however, shows discrepancies due to increased dead-time at low-energies.
The energy-dependent dead-time model fits accurately the experimental energy
spectra in the range of counting rates explored in this work.

Structural and Electronic Properties of Triangular Graphene Nanoholes
Chagas, T.¹, Gonçalves, P. H. R.¹, Matos, M. J. S.², Mazzoni, M. S. C.¹, Oliveira Jr., M. H.¹,
Magalhães-Paniago, R.¹
The extensive research focused on graphene in the last years has revealed several
intriguing properties that confer to this material an enormous potential of application
and a continuum source of new physical phenomena [1-3]. In particular, the direct
growth of graphene on insulating substrates like silicon carbide (SiC) is a major step
in the direction of the development of nanodevices based on carbon. In this work we
have used atomically-resolved scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and
spectroscopy (STS) to study the structural and electronic properties of a bilayer
graphene (BLG) on a SiC substrate. Our graphene sample was obtained by SiC(0001)
substrate sublimation, succeeded by an oxygen intercalation. This process decouples
the graphene layer from the substrate by converting the buffer layer, an sp3
hybridized carbon layer, into a monolayer graphene sheet, turning the sample into a
quasi-free-standing bilayer graphene [4,5]. Our study revealed the appearance of
triangular graphene nanoholes, which proved to be a monolayer graphene structure
incrusted in a BLG/SiC sample as a consequence of the incomplete intercalation
process. Thus, these nanoholes could work as a graphene quantum dot, working as a
potential barrier able to confine electrons for specific energies. Our STM
measurements have revealed that the termination of the nanoholes are of zigzag
type, rather than armchair. Electronic confined states could be visualized through STS
maps, which are proportional to the density of states, performed along these
structures.

discutidos.

Combined Neutron and X-Ray Synchrotron Tomography of Oil Reservoir Rocks
In the field of oil industry, carbonate rocks reveal a complex heterogeneous pore
structure that needs to be characterized, in order to better understand some
mechanisms such as the process of multiphase flow through a porous medium. Micro
computed tomography (µCT) is a non-destructive technique for material evaluation,
which allows the internal structure visualization of an object. In this work, we
compared the resolution and the contrast of three different types of tomography:
synchrotron x-ray tomography (SRXTM), conventional x-ray tomography (CT) and
neutron tomography (NT). A sample of sedimentary rock was analyzed by 3D
tomography volumes, in which were obtained the porosity and the volume fraction of
its different phases by image segmentation. Those phases were determined by the
techniques of XRD, EPMA, EDX and WDS, and SEM images were made for the further
microstructural analysis and compared to the synchrotron resolution. The presence
of hydrogen containing materials in the rock samples, such as water or oil, was
detected by the contrast of neutron tomography and characterized by infrared
spectroscopy (IR). This research provides valuable information on the different
methods of rock characterization, and such understanding is fundamental for an
optimized oil exploration.

The main goal of this project is to use a X-ray 1/4 wave plate to convert linearly
polarized X-rays into circularly polarized for efficient X-ray magnetic circular
dichroism experiments. This plate is a made of birefringent material, single crystalline
diamond in this case, so its refraction index depends on the incidence angle and
generates a phase retardation of 90o between the horizontal and vertical
components of the electrical field. This instrumentation is motivated by the need to
have the total control of the polarization and a fast helicity switching, besides the
improvement of the polarization rate and beam intensity, today limited to 70%
circularly polarized and ~1/3 of the initial intensity. We have designed a complete
experimental set-up to use the 1/4 wave plate at two beamlines of LNLS, and one
beamline of the future synchrotron Sirius. With preliminary experiments, we have
successfully generated 98% rate of circularly polarized X-rays with a diamond quarter
wave plate at the goniometry currently available at the XDS beamline. We are
currently commissioning the final set- up to allow efficient XMCD experiments at
magnetic fields of up to 6 T in the next few months.

Catalyst enhanced gas sensor response of unusual SnO and Sn3O4 nanomaterials
as alternative building blocks for new chemical sensor devices
In present days it is necessary to engage the attention about the impact of gas
emissions on health, safety and the environment, pushing to the development of gas
sensor devices made from alternative materials to detect traces of flammable and
toxic gases coupled with high long-term stability and selectivity for potential
interferents. One of the great challenges of nanotechnology has been the
development of engineered nanodevices, taking advantage of quantum confinement
effects. Due to their improved electrical properties, 1D nanomaterials are particularly
interesting structures, especially to be used in electronic and optoelectronic devices.
In this work, a study about the gas sensor properties of pristine and noble metal-
decorated SnO and Sn3O4 nanobelts is presented. SnO and Sn3O4 structures were
synthesized by carbothermal reduction method and catalyst metal nanoparticles (Pt,
Pd and Ag) were prepared by Polyol method. Surface functionalization of the
nanobelts was achieved by coating the structures with 1wt% of metallic nanoparticles,
followed by thermal treatment. Gas sensor responses of the materials were
performed by exposing devices to different concentrations (1-1000 ppm) of NO2, H2,
CO and CH4 in different operating temperatures, ranging from 150 to 350°C, using
synthetic dry air as reference gas. Structural and morphological characterizations of
materials showed that the nanobelts of both materials are single-crystalline and
present homogeneous width along their length. After the decoration step, metal
nanoparticles with average diameter of 10 nm were found to be well-dispersed over
the SnO and Sn3O4 surface. Results from gas sensor measurements showed that
pristine SnO and Sn3O4 nanobelts present higher sensitivity for oxidizing gases than
for reducing ones, which is expected for n-type semiconductor. On the other hand,
the metal-decorated samples exhibited higher sensitivity for reducing gases, which is
due to the catalytic effect of nanoparticles. Furthermore, the sensitivity of pristine
and metal-decorated nanobelts was found to be highly dependent on the operating
temperature of sensors due to the adsorption/desorption kinetics of the gas species
on the surface of these structures. Finally, impedance spectroscopy studies enabled
the deconvolution of bulk and interfacial contributions to the sensor response of
materials. Overall, we discuss the structural, morphological and electrical properties
of pristine and metal-decorated SnO and Sn3O4 materials that can be used in future
technological applications in nanotechnology field, including transistor and gas
sensors technologies. CNPq and FAPESP funding agencies supported this work.
