A man went to meet Socrates taking to the philosopher information that he thought would be
of interest to him:
- Wait a moment - said Socrates - Before you tell me, I want to know if you passed that
information through the three sieves.
- Let's sift through what you want to tell me. We must always use the three sieves. If you do
not know her, pay close attention. The first is the sieve of TRUTH. Are you sure what you want
to tell me is true?
- Well, that's what I heard others say. I do not know exactly if it's true.
- The second sieve is that of GOODNESS. Surely, you must have passed the information
through the sieve of kindness. Or not?
- The third sieve is that of UTILITY. Have you thought about whether what you came to say
about my friend is useful?
So, said the wise man, if what you want to tell me is not true, nor good, nor useful, then it is
better that you keep it only to yourself.
Moral of the story: If people used these criteria, they would be happier and would use their
efforts and talents in other activities, rather than obeying the impulse to simply pass them on.
