Imagens regionais

« Cada solo faz os seus homcns, como faz as suas irvores e as suas flores» escreveu
Durif. «As terras sao sempre o que os seus povos fazem delas» - diremos nos com
Kirchhoff- e tornam-se muitas vezes a imagem deles.
Em varias regioes de Portugal o trabalho do homem, atraves das gera96es, remodelou
completamente o solo, incorporando-se de certo modo na paisagem.
No Noroeste, a agricultura parece um «milagre» do esfon;o humano: constroem-se
socalcos nas encostas, exploram-se aguas de rega, recompoe-se o terreno com estrumes.
E ao mar ainda se recorre para a cultura <las terras e alimenta9ao dos homens.
No Nordeste - Terra Fria - a montanha e o planalto isolam o habitante, sempre
mais conservador de antigos usos e costumes. 0 clima rigoroso e a pobreza do solo tornam
a cria9ao de gados recurso indispensavel; mas dentro desta regiao. ingrata o vale profundo
do Douro - Terra Quente - talhado de alto a baixo em gigantesco anfiteatro, lembra as
paginas sempre abertas de um poema glorioso: Donde ninguem tiraria seniio pedras, tirou
ele (o �omem) ... o melhor vinho do mundo (RAUL BRAND.AO).
A beira-mar, surge logo uma regiao inconfundivel - a Rolanda portuguesa de
Reclus - viveiro de pescadores e maritimos sempre prontos a partir para outras terras.
E todo o Centro do Pais pode considerar-se depois uma zona de transi9ao, onde a cria9ao
do gado bravo e cavalar <las campinas ribatejanas oferece um estranho quadro da Pampa
argentina mesmo as portas de Lisboa.
Nos extensos descampados do Sul, e mais mon6tona a paisagem e menos densa a
popula9ao. Aumenta a secura; e numa regiao onde a Natureza parecia impor ao homem
a economia pastoril, torna-se dominante a cultura do trigo, e as pr6prias mulheres «fazem
as cal9as» para melhor se desembara9arem no traba]ho dos campos.
No Algarve pratica-se uma agricultura de jardinagem a sombra das arvores de fruto;
e, como no Alto Douro, as galas da Natureza e a do9ura do clima mediterraneo
conjugam-se para dar no Inverno o espectaculo incomparavel das amendoeiras em flor.

Procurando realizar melhor a ideia da colecyiio «The Covar­

rubias Mural-Maps», pretendeu-se dar alguns aspectos fisicos e
humanos do territ6rio pela imagem viva e colorida, sem cair no
exagero de uma lamentavel tendencia moderna que ja vai trans­
formando atlas geograficos em albuns de fotografias.
O desenho a aguarela foi executado, segundo indicayCles do A.,
por D. Maria Helena Abreu, professora do Liceu do Porto.

Regional scenes
«Bach land makes its men, as it makes its trees and flowers» wrote Durif. «Lands
are always what people make out of them» - should we say after Kirchhoff- and very often
look like an image of them.
In several regions of Portugal the work of man throughout generations has completely
remodelled the land incorporating it to some extent in the scenery.
In the North-west agriculture appears to be almost a miracle of human effort: terraces
have been built on the slopes, irrigation has been enforced, and the soil has been improved by
means of manure The sea is also resorted to for the cultivation of land and for feeding man.
In the North-east- the Cold Lands - mountains and plateaus have isolated the
inhabitants, therefore their habits and traditions have remained more conservative. Owing
to a severe climate and a weak soil, cattle breeding cannot be dispensed with; however this
ungrateful region, with its deep valley of the river Douro - the Warm Lands - resembling
a gigantic flight of stairs, appears to us like the ever open pages of a glorious poem: «From
where no one could get but stones, man has taken out the best wine in the world» (Raul Brandiio).
At the sea-side, an unmistakably characteristic region appears - Portuguese
Netherlands, as Reclus called it - a land of .fishermen and sailors always ready to sail off
to other lands. The whole centre of the country may be considered a zone of transition where

the cattle and horse breeding of the Ribatejo plains provides us a strange counterpart of the

expected to impose a pastoral economy the cultivation of wheat became -predominant, and

even the women adjust their skirts trousers-like to get on easier with their work in the fields.

In the Algarve a gardening type of agriculture under the shade of fruit-trees prevails,

and, as in the Alto Douro, an exuberant Nature and the fine Mediterranean climate have
united to produce in Winter the matchless sight of almond-trees in blossom.
