“microorganismos vivos que quando administrados em quantidades adequadas,
conferem benefícios à saúde do hospedeiro” (WHO, 2001). E, dentre eles a
contribuição para prevenção ou manejo do quadro diarreico. Afinal, dentro das
principais funcionalidades dos probióticos, destaca-se o reestabelecimento da
microbiota intestinal, a qual foi comprometida na utilização de antibióticos, por
exemplo (HILL et al, 2014). Aliás, é importante destacar, que não só a
antibioticoterapia corrobora para essa alteração na composição microbiana
intestinal. Mas, diversos fatores inerentes à clínica do paciente, assim como também,
terapêuticos, que isolados ou associados, irão resultar na alteração da microbiota,
predispondo, assim, às alterações na motilidade do trato gastrointestinal, como a
diarreia. E, ainda, os probióticos apresentam como funcionalidades, a inibição de
proliferação de microorganismos patogênicos bem como a produção de
substâncias antimicrobianas. Essas auxiliam para a integridade do meio, reduzindo,
a entrada de substâncias patogênicas e de quadros infecciosos.
