COED Y BRENIN VISITOR CENTRE EXTENS|O0V/03/2013 (SCROLL DOWN FOR PROJECT UPDATE) Ina significant breakthrough in the campaign to manufacture Brettstapel construction from homegrown timber, Forestry ‘Commission Wales have commissioned Architype to design an extension to the Goed y Brenin Visitor Centre. This will be the first built example of homegrown Brettstapel in the UK. ‘The 400m, two-storey structure, which will include @ new bike shop, cycle hire, mult-functional conference and meeting room and café overfow area, will use Brettstapel made from UK sourced timber for load-bearing external walls, intomnal paritions and first loor. Surfaces are mainly to be left exposed and treated with a non-toxic fre retardant coating, and there is BELOW discussion about using an ‘acoustic’ profile to the underside of TOP: Wal panelin-stu (mage: Archtype) ‘some ceiling panels to help contro! sound quality MIDDLE: Hal-lap joint between panels (image: Architype) BOTTOM: Lamolia profile image: Architype) External cladding will be locally sourced heartwood of European larch, recycled cellulase insulation is to be used around the outside of the Bretistapel panels and the entire building will be detailed to be air-tight. Off-site manufacture of the Brettstapel panels is expected to contribute to a high level of, quality as well as reducing construction time on site - which will be important considering that the centre is one of Wales’ most popular, with over 150,000 visitors each year. ‘The use of Bretistapel on the projectis the result of significant investment by Wood Knowledge Wales, Wales Forest Business Partnership, Forestry Commission Wales and others to develop high-value uses for Welsh timber and stimulate a more diverse forest resource. Although there are, as yet, no commercial Bretistapel manufacturers in the UK, itis hoped that this project, hip:iwwu bretstapel orgBretstapelPrcjects/Enties/2013/47 Coed y_Brerin Visitor Certre Extension hm! 12 soaz0 Coed y Brenin Visitor Cerra Extonsion will act as a catalyst for others, stimulate further interest in this, type of construction and help to get the manufacture of Brettstapel from homegrown timber underway. PROJECT UPDATE - March 2013: Having started on site towards the end of 2012, the construction ofthe UK's frst homegrown Bretistapel building has progressed well, with the entire superstructure now erected. The images to the right show the halt-lap joint developed by the builder, Williams Homes, to connect panels together and a finished wall panel in-situ ‘Shadow gaps have been included on the wall panels to disguise movement between lamellae in the future. The panels aro used for the walls in two heights: 3m for the ground floor and 2.7m for the frst floor. Individual lamellae are profiled to help self-locate and hold together during manufacture and use. hntp:swww.architype.co.uk hipiwwn brtstapel orgBretstapelPrcjects/Enties/2013/47 Coed y_Brenin Visitor Certre_ Extension hm! 22
