Os numerais podem ser:

Cardinais

Indicam uma quantidade exacta

Ex.: quatro, mil, quinhentos

Ex.: O Rui tem três filhos. Um deles é professor, os outros dois estudam na universidade.

Ordinais

Indicam uma posição exacta

Ex.: segundo, décimo

Ex.: Ele foi o primeiro atleta a chegar.

Números Ordinais em datas - Ordinal Numbers in dates:

     Na língua portuguesa, as datas escrevem-me usando os número cardinais/cardinal

numbers (um, dois, três, etc.) enquanto que na língua inglesa usamos os números
cardinais/cardinal numbers (first (1st), second (2nd), third (3rd), etc.

Por exemplo, a data 13 de Maio é escrita em inglês: 13th May.

     O modo como se fala é geralmente The thirteen of May.

Spelling of Ordinal Numbers

Just add th to the cardinal number:
 four - fourth
 eleven – eleventh


Exceptions:
 one - first
 two - second
 three - third
 five - fifth
 eight - eighth
 nine - ninth
 twelve - twelfth

Figures

When expressed as figures, the last two letters of the written word are added to the ordinal
number:
 first = 1st
 second = 2nd
 third = 3rd
 fourth = 4th
