A Via Algarviana e os
“Caminhos de S. Vicente”
Apesar da Via Algarviana não ter sido
estabelecida com um próposito religioso, a
verdade é que a sua origem mistura-se, em
parte, com aquilo que foi conhecido como
os “Caminhos de S. Vicente”, um itinerário
do “Moçarabe” (sec. XI), traçado desde
Alcoutim, Silves, Lagos ao Promontório de
Sagres – ou Cabo de S. Vicente -, numa
extensão de 220 quilómetros. Segundo a
história, foi nesse local que as relíquias de
São Vicente deram à costa, numa barca
guardada por dois corvos, que a vigiaram
desde Valência até à costa algarvia.
Este acontecimento atribuiu um especial
significado sagrado a este local – daí o
nome Promotorium sacrum -, motivando
as peregrinações ao mesmo. Este itinerário
ficou conhecido como o primeiro de “Sete
Itinerários Medievais”, numa iniciativa
promovida pela “Associação Caminus” em
1990, hoje representada na publicação
“Moçárabe em peregrinação a S. Vicente:
de Mértola ao Cabo de S. Vicente (integrado
em sete itinerários medievais)”.
The Via Algarviana and
the “Paths of S. Vicente”
Even though the Via algarviana has not
been established with a religious purpose,
the truth is that its origin is mixed, in part,
with what was known as the “Paths of S.
Vincent, a “Mozarab” path (Century XI),
outlined from Alcoutim, Silves, Lagos to
the Sagres Promontory - or Cape of S.
Vincent - in an extension of 220 kilometres.
According to history, this was the place
where the relics of St. Vincent reached
the coast in a boat guarded by two crows,
which guarded it from Valencia to the
Algarve coast. This event gave a special
sacred meaning to this place - origin of the
name Promotorium Sacrum - motivating
the pilgrimages to it. This path became
known as the first of “Seven Medieval
itineraries,” with an initiative promoted by
the “Caminus Association” in 1990, now
represented in the publication “Moçárabe
em peregrinação a S. Vicente: de Mértola
ao Cabo de S. Vicente (integrado em sete
itinerários medievais)”.
