Investments in technology and safety reduced the accident rate by roughly 80%. More resistant axles and sleepers, computerized Operational Control Centers, and locomotives tracked by GPS, are just some of the new items introduced which have helped the railways become safer and more efficient. Other results from the private concessionaires also attract the attention, especially the growth in the rolling stock: between 1997 and 2010, the amount of locomotives and wagons in use grew more than 128%. Because of this greater demand, Brazilian railway productivity increased considerably, proving that the development of a strategic sector leads to growth in many others.

Another great challenge is the increase in intermodality, that is, the successive and complimentary use of various modes of transport. This integrated logistics depends on modern transshipment terminals (especially at ports) and improvements to the current Brazilian tax system, which still burdens intermodal transport. The absence of fiscal incentives for the Brazilian railway industry also hampers the sectors development, which depends on more competitive conditions for consolidation, despite the growth obtained in the last years. All of these issues have been discussed by the ANTF Associao Nacional dos Transportadores Ferrovirios (National Railway Transporters Association) and its associates, with clients, suppliers, and the Government, through a process of constant and constructive dialogue, contributing to the development of rail cargo transport in Brazil.
