S
ince the first drawing in stone until his great artistic influence: the
comic marked history, counting in an informal way and always
innovative, the stories of the people, their culture, their passions,
their idols. Bringing heroes and structuring an intense social criticism, the
Comics adaptations faced artistic varied formats, commerce and public
industry. In Brazil, comics, comics struggled to survive and excel in the
global market. The Comics have a lot of history to tell.
Background of comics
With a flash-back by antiquity, we can think
that the first men began a phase of
contemplation of the world where they lived
from the time that gave wings to imagination.
The graphic communications may have taken
the first steps with stone drawings of
animals with six legs, giving a poor (but
perceptible) idea of movement. The idea of
telling stories through images can be
observed from pre-history. At that time, humans drew the rocks the
events of your day-to-day, as the fighters they performed. Drawings of
this type exist in the caves of Lascaux in France, as elsewhere in the world,
and are called rock art. Whoever has the chance to see these paintings may
notice that the images follow a sequence - like the comics we know today.
The Egyptians stepped more convincing developing one of the first form of
written language (hieroglyphs - an orderly reading through pictures).
Egyptian artists thus created the concept of continuity, a series of
grouping pictures compositions - similarly to HQs (Comics). Likewise, the
Babylonians represented in relief, sculptures and bas-reliefs detailed their
stories.
The Greeks were responsible for the next step in the development of art:
the human figure became the center of attention, resulting in their
refinement and emphasis of the narrative element.
2
Already in antiquity we have the example of Trajan, the Roman emperor
who, in the year 113d.c. he built a column where their battles were counted
in several drawings spiral. The column today takes its name and the
beholder can see that the images obey an order and are related to each
other, telling a story. Already the Romans gave rise to satirical drawings
that achieved great popularity.
The Vikings also built pictures that adorned carpets and manuscripts.
More and more the graphical interpretation was being developed and the
art of storytelling through images was becoming a universal language.
In
the
Middle Ages from the 14th century we have another example of a story
that recalls the comic: the Way of the Cross Christian - the story of the
trial and crucifixion of Jesus told by the Catholic Church, which is narrated
in various styles. In some churches it is made of stone, in others, in
paintings or handmade panels.
But the author of the comic, which was closer to the one we know today
was the Swiss teacher Rodolphe Töpffer who designed M. Vieux-Bois
perhaps the first comic book in the world created in 1827
However the first comic published in the format set out today was the
Yellow Kid comic strip published on May 5, 1895 in the World Journal New
York United States. Its author Richard F. Outcault was the first to use
lines in your drawings - those balloons we see in current comics. "But long
before that several other authors have produced stories illustrated in the
drawings appeared in sequence with the text corresponding to the
narrative or characters to speak of just below the
illustration.

not considered the first comics. In the early 20th century magazines for
children as Tico-Tico and Sesinho - relaunched in 2001 - brought comic
blockbuster. Later in 1960 comic books famous as the Panel of Pererê

Comics in Brazil
The children's magazine “The Tico-
Tico” was the first comic printed in
Brazil in 1905, highlighting local artists
when original U.S. no longer held.
Gradually, the Brazilian artists were
standing out with their own comics. Until
the 60s, the national HQs had as its
main theme the superheroes, trend due
to the influence of North American
comics in Brazil. However, the
"competition" between national comics
and Americans was unfair: the imported
product was better and cheaper than
the national. The consequence was that
few superheroes stayed firm - "Captain 7" is a proud exception. Around the
70's came a new copyright law, eliminating many plagiarisms among Brazilian
HQs. With the end of the "golden age" of superheroes national Brazilian
authors left to the path of humor, horror and erotic. Today, the Brazilian
HQs are among the best in the world in many of the factions in the market.

Who invented the comics?
The first modern comic book (HQ) was created by the American Artist
Richard Outcault in 1895. "The language of comics, with the adoption of a
fixed character, action and fragmented frameworks balloons texts,
appeared in the New York tabloids with the Yellow Kid, says historian and
journalist Álvaro Moya , author of History of Comic Books. The strip of
Outcault was so successful that the big New York newspapers went on the
warpath to have the Yellow Kid in its pages. But it is clear that this original
format to tell a story not appeared at the head of Outcault of a sudden. If
we look for the first roots of the comic, we can reach the cave paintings
made by prehistoric men that served to tell, for example, as were his
adventures in hunting.
Although these artists have created works combining text and image
years before Yellow Kid, important characteristics of modern comics, such
as the use of baloons with the "lines", for example, really only appear in
American comic strip character. Georges Colomb and even the italian
Angelo Agostini, settled in Brazil since the age of 16.
6
The Press in Comics
Strips are like little comic book, only much minors who narrate facts of
various styles. We can find them in newspapers, magazines and comic books.
What are we talking about here is the funny comic strips of usually cause
laughter to those who read.
Some strips are already so popular
of turned up book as the case of
Mafalda, a girl of about seven years
old, who hates soup and loves the
Beatles and the animations of the
woodpecker, it behaves like a boy of
his age, but lives questioning the
world in which he live and the life he
has.
Helga and Hagar
Another famous strip is Helga and Hagar, the couple vicking. Helga a
housewife and bossy, being the essence of the perfect figure "super mom"
who often argues with Hagar about his habits like forgetting to wash your
hands, do not wipe your feet before entering or even when of it will grow
and Hagar, the Viking protagonist, he's a warrior who often tries to invade
England and other countries, takes a personal frustrated life is both a
fierce warrior, as a family man. His personal hygiene is exceptionally poor
and his annual bath is a time of celebrations.
7
How came the comic strips in
the world and in Brazil?
The strips can also be made of events in sports, in politics, among other
topics which are criticized and ironized through bizarre drawings .
In the nineteenth century was the United States who began publishing in
newspapers weekly colored strips each Sunday. They followed the
newspapers as if children's supplement. Adolfo Aizen brought this idea to
Brazil only in 1930.
The strip came the idea of short stories, so that the reading of the text
was fast, efficient and good-natured. Classes are used in Portuguese and in
almost all textbooks found strips for analysis and study.

XILOGRAVURA
Graças a
partes elevadas do entalhe.
a figura.

The evolution of the comics
I
n 1938, after Harry Donenfeld’s partner, Wheeler-Nicholson quited ,
the editor Vin Sullivan's from National Allied brought a creation of
Siegel / Shuster for the cover page (although the story is secondary
in the magazine) 10 in Action Comics # 1 (June 1938.) Was the disguised
alien hero, Superman, wearing colorful clothes and a cape like the circus
performers, and that would become the archetype of the "super-heroes"
who would follow. The issue of Action Comics would become the American
comic book with the second highest number of copies, close to Dell's Four
Color Comics which is the record holder with approximately 860
publications.
The fans call the period from the late 1930s to the late 1940s the "Golden
Age" of American comics. Action Comics Marvel and Captain Marvel sold
half a million copies every month and 11 comics have become a popular and
cheap means of entertainment during the World War.
With the end of the war, the popularity of superheroes declined rapidly.
Editors began, around 1945, replacing them with adventures of juvenile
humor (symbolized in Archie Comics), animals such as Walt Disney, science
fiction, westerns, romance and parodies. The Timely superheroes were
canceled in 1950 to the latest figures of Captain America. Only National
Heroes (Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman) continued, but were close
to extinction in 1952.
The "comics" continued to have high bandages. The magazine Walt
Disney's Comics and Stories has sold nearly three million copies per month
in 1953.
10
Nearly a dozen titles with animals Dell sold a million copies every month
while the horror comics of EC Comics, geared towards adult audiences,
400.000 monthly.

most popular characters of the Marvel Family
11
The comics Code
Between the end of the 1940s, and the
beginning of the 1950s, the comic books of
Horror and Crime Grew up mostly Especially for
violent content and blood. The EC ("Educational
Comics" then called "Entertaining Comics")
owned by Max Gaines, after his death passed
to his son Bill Gaines and became a major
commercial success and brought a creative art.
The careers of many famous artists like Al
Feldstein, Wallace Wood, Reed Crandall, Jack
Davis, Will Elder and others began in the
offices of EC13. Despite the clear quality of the work, the psychiatrist
Fredric Wertham accused Gaines of publishing comics more infamous.
Wertham's book called Seduction of the Innocent (1954), held that there
was sadistic and homosexual perversions in horror stories and superheroes.
Then a moral crusade blamed comic books for juvenile delinquency in the
lower classes of the population, and the use of drugs and, ultimately
committing crimes. A Senate subcommittee discussed the comics (April-
June 1954).
12
In 1961 the editor / writer Stan Lee and his co-
writer Jack Kirby created the Fantastic Four for
Marvel Comics. This magazine started a wave
naturalistic literature of superheroes that were
humanized, sense fear and facing inner demons,
they had difficulties such as lack of money.
Illustrated by the dynamic art of Kirby, Steve
Ditko, Don Heck and others who completed the
colorful prose of Lee, the new style has created a
revolution that made fans than children college
students. Marvel has been restricted to a few titles that were distributed
by the National rival, a situation that would continue for the entire decade
of 1960.
Other publishers followed the new strand as the American Comics Group
(ACG), the small Charlton, initial home of many professionals like Dick
Giordano; Dell, Gold Key, Harvey Comics (famous for the characters of the
class of Casper) and Tower.
Underground comics
In the ending of 1960s and early than
1970s was the popularization of so-
called underground comics. Launched
in independent publications and
outside of the circuit of major
publishers, was a reflection of the
counterculture of the time. The
characters were misfits, irreverent,
as had been the first comic. A
milestone was the publication of
Robert Crumb called Zap Comix # 1 in
1968, which had as its background the
comic porn dubbed "Tijuana bibles",
dating from the year 1920 and The
Adventures of Jesus, Frank Stack,
published in 1962. Although many of
the artists continue their work with the underground movement, which
would have ended in the ending of 1980s, being replaced by alternative
comics and aimed for adult audiences.

The Bronze Age
14
The Modern Age
The development of a new distribution system in
the 1970s, and specialized bookstores frequented by
collectors and coincided with the appearance of
magazines with special stories. The comics in
continuity had an increase of complexity, requiring
readers they spent more magazines to reach the end
of the story. The price of magazines rose enough,
causing the lack of paper in United States.
In the mid of the 1980, two mini-series published
by DC Comics, Batman: The Dark Knight Returns and
Watchmen, caused a profound impact on the
American comic book industry. The popularity and
attention from the mainstream media that rose,
combined with the social changes caused a change of
themes that have become more mature and dark.
The growing popularity of anti-heroes like Punisher and Wolverine were
against that produced so independent counsel, as the comic nihilists and
obscure the First Comics, Dark Horse Comics (founded in 1990) and Image
Comics. The DC followed the wave with the publication of "A Death in the
Family," the story in which the Joker brutally murders Robin. Marvel
managed to keep up with the various titles of the X-Men with stories that
approached genocide of mutants and allegories about religion and ethnic
persecution.
In 2000, the tide had already exhausted and despite the Marvel and DC
still launches the special stories, magazines ceased to be consumed in mass,
as in the past decades.
D
espite publications have fallen, the
licensing of characters to new markets
such as electronic games and feature
films, perpetuated their image in the
general public. Continued the special
stories promoted as major events such
as the wedding of Spider-Man (with
Mary Jane), Superman's death and the
death of Captain America, with
extensive press coverage. justiceiro and Wolverine

The structure and production
of comic Books
M
any wonder how it is elaborated a comic book and think that is a
hard-work to its creation. Unlike what people think, it is simple
to create comic books, but for that you must respect some
elements, and then produce the HQ.
17
2º - Chute: is the space between the frames, the lower a chute faster the
scene, and the further away, the slower is the scene. To decorate the
design, many artists paint the gutters with contrasting colors or similar,
depending on the scene.
Chute
3º - Balloon and reminders: Balloon is the speech bubble which presents
all the characters' speeches. For the speech bubbles do not stay long the
authors typically use short sentences , using objectives and easy words for
the simple understand _ . Before the drawing is created which will position
the balloon speech, so it is avoided that the pattern occupies more space
than the desired speech. There are several speech bubbles to represent
many expressions varying in color, shape and position.
There are also reminders which are the closed balloons _ , usually square
or rectangular, staying in the top left corner, but may vary from position.
Show the tells of the narrator, but also can show the character's thoughts.
18
19
4º - Letters, title and onomatopoeia: the letters are uppercase, varying
with the situation changes the
color and structure of the
source, especially in the title.
Onomatopoeia words are sounds
represented by expressing
natural phenomena, feelings,
sensations, sounds of various
objects and actions. When
represented out of a balloon

environment when they are in

create something creative. In addition, there are techniques to convey
ideas and feelings conveyed by the characters, like the focus on character,
using quotes, dripping sweat, air displacement effect to suggest movement
or sensation in character, play of light and shadow, the varying role the
character in the story (villain, hero, neutral) physical characteristics are
important, bodily expressions, proportions and feature. The setting
depends on the intention of the author, can show the environment that the
story develops, or can be a colored background when the site does not have
much importance. Assists greatly in the design and actions of the
characters.
The scenery is present in the first frame, showing where the scene
unfolds, but to focus on the comic situation following the detailed
background and some uses a colored background with cold colors and
evolving to hot colors in order to show a conflict in scene.
21
6 - Visual Narrative: is the way we read the comic
strip, being from left to right, top to bottom. The
character who speaks or greater prominence, usually is
left, but can also stay at another angle, long as it
receives prominence in the scene. Movements and
glances are positioned according to the action, in other
words, if a character points to the sky and asks to look
at, the other will not stay looking at the reader, for
example
22
But there is variation in the creation of visual narratives like the Manga,
who are Japanese comics, which due to reading from right to left, top to
bottom, changes the entire structure.
- “Hi, guys.”
-“mother,let´s play?”

Steps of comics
T
he comics have more parts before your creation. These parts
together create great comics.
25
Show the action: It is important
to think about what you are writing
will turn into pictures. Instead of
putting a box of narration explaining
that a character is evil, create a
situation in which he can
demonstrate his wickedness. The
more important the action, the more
details you have to include the
script, which will serve as guidance
for the designer. Remember that, in
a script, you identify text that
should come in the box (in balloons
or in tables of narration). This text
should always be complementary to
action.
4.Trait: defining the design style to
be used, as well as the hue and color
of light along with the density.
5.Format: Setting number of pages, as this procedure will indicate the
pace of the narrative.
6.Space distribution chart / sketch: defines the format of HQ through
scribbles history, reserving space for dialogue and subtitles.
7.The Pencil: used for designer show your dash with greater definition. A
drawing done in pencil and is considered good progress in the construction
of comics
8.Artwork: is the stage of completion that goes from the dash to the
paint time to give color to the illustrations.
9.Lettering: term originated in the English language, refers to the time to
edit the text.
10.Cover: considered as a major way to draw attention of the reader must
be extremely planned.
26
11.Back Cover: Displays credits and
additional texts.
12.Overhaul of text and pictures: key to
avoid frequent errors found in HQ.
13.Graphic test: Time to check if
everything is represented on paper as
requested.
14.Printing: When facing commercial
production is established a budget, schedule
and forecast draft that is pre-set by the
publisher responsible for publishing rights.

explicar ele.

História em quadrinhos no
Brasil
A
quadrinhos no país começou no início do século XX.
exemplares, abrangendo várias classes, inclusive a intelectual.
Os suplementos de jornais e o
surgimento das editoras (1929
- 1959)
Em Setembro de 1929, o jornal “A
Gazeta” cria um suplemento de quadrinhos no
formato tabloide “A Gazetinha”, baseado
nos Suplementos dominicais de quadrinhos
americanos; no mês seguinte, a Casa Editorial
Vecchi (uma editora de origem italiana) lançou
a revista “Mundo Infantil” (publicada por
apenas um ano), porém o sucesso dos
suplementos se deu em 1934 com a criação
do “Suplemento Infantil” (mais tarde passa a
se chamar “Suplemento Juvenil”) de Adolfo
Aizen.
31
cruzeiros, funda a Editora Brasil-America Ltda.
Aizen lança a revista “Seleções Coloridas”, trazendo
33
Em Janeiro de 1950, a Casa Editorial Vecchi,
lança a revista “O Pequeno Xerife” no formato
The Black Terror da Nedor Comics.
revista “Cômico Colegial”, trazendo apenas o nome “O Terror Negro”,
chegando a fazer sucesso.
Terror”, “Frankenstein” (no ano seguinte); as revistas eram todas compostas
e Torresmo”, “Oscarito e Grande Otelo”,
35
Passaram
pela Editora Nomes com: Gedeone Malagola, Júlio Shimamoto, Flavio
Colin, Gutemberg Monteiro, Nico Rosso, Paulo Hamasaki, Wilson Fernandes
entre outros. A editora lançou alguns títulos licenciados: “Capitão 7”
36
Década de 1960
m 1960, Ziraldo lança a revista “Pererê”,
A ADESP
(Associação dos Desenhistas de São Paulo),
composta por Mauricio de Sousa
(presidente), Ely Barbosa (vice), Lyrio
Aragão Dias (secretário-geral), Luiz
Saidenberg (primeiro-secretário), Daniel
Messias (segundo-secretário), Júlio
Shimamoto (tesoureiro), José Gonçalves de
Carvalho (primeiro tesoureiro) e Ernan
Flávio Teixeira, Luiz Saidenberg e Renato Canini; a CETPA, porém, duraria
Enquanto publica “A Turma
criar a mascote Augustinha. A pedido de Mauricio de Sousa, Julio
Shimamoto cria a tira

Comics: Gasparzinho; Riquinho; Brasinha.
42
Janeiro.
44
As revistas da Bloch foram muito
criticadas, pois a editora adotou o
formatinho ao invés do formato
americano; além de serem impressas em
baixa qualidade, as cores de vários
personagens apareciam trocadas, e a
editora optou por publicar histórias
inéditas de vários personagens, menos do
Homem-Aranha, pois as mesmas já
haviam sido publicadas pela EBAL. A
parceira com a TV Tupi duraria até 1978.
45
Julio Shimamoto e Flavio Colin.
do francê Georges Wolinski e “Valentina” do italiano Guido Crepax, a revista
foi publicada até 1972 e teve 48 edições .
46
Jack Wohl; “Os Bichos”, de Rog Bollen; “Feiffer”, de Jules Feiffer;
47
Década de 1980
Em 1980, o cartunista Ziraldo lançou o livro
“O Menino Maluquinho”. O personagem
também foi adaptado para os quadrinhos pela
Editora Abril, onde foi publicado entre 1989
e 1994.
Em 1981, Rodolfo Zalla e Eugênio Colonnese
transformam o Estúdio D-Arte em editora,
que foi responsável pelos
títulos “Calafrio” e “Mestres do Terror”.
décimo quinto álbum do “Príncipe Valente”.
Em 1991, a Bloch Editores publicou a
revista “Mestre Kim”, a revista era
inspirada em “Yong Min Kim”, coreano
naturalizado brasileiro, mestre de “Tae-
Kwon-Do”, Kim, ensinou defesa pessoal a
qual fazia parte a Bloch Editores), a
aberta, começam a surgir novas revistas informativas, surgem a Revista
as revistas “HQ - Revista do Quadrinho Brasileiro” (outra revista inspirada
na americana “Heavy Metal”), “Graphic Talents”, “Comix Book Shop
HQs autorais “Holy Avenger”, “U.F.O. Team”.

a webcomics (quadrinhos cuja publicação é
Rangers, Combo Rangers Zero e Combo Rangers
adolescente, a Editora JBC (Japan Brazil Communication) publica “Samurai
quadrinhos; as Organizações Globo publicavam
Globo Juvenil”.

Cartoonists
Maurício de Souza
M
auricio de Sousa is a Brazilian cartoonist
who has created over 200 characters for
his popular series of children's comic
books. Born in Santa Isabel on October 27, 1935.
His father, Antonio Mauricio de Sousa, was a poet,
and his mother, Petronilla de Sousa Araújo, also
delved into poetry. Mauricio developed an interest in
cartoons at a young age, and began designing posters
and magazine illustrations.
56
Thus, left with no other option but to return the comics, at least until the
Brazilian economic situation improved. In 1987 the comic books began to be
published by Editora Globo, in conjunction with the studio Mauricio de
Souza.
In 2007, all securities Monica went to the multinational Panini, who at the
time also owned the rights to the publications of the superheroes of
Marvel and DC Comics. Still in the same year, Mauricio de Souza received
honors for samba school, Unidos do Peruche, who sang the theme song
"With Mauricio de Sousa to the States Peruche open wings, open books,
open minds and makes you dream."
57
In 2011, he was honored at the seventh annual International Comics
Festival, in Belo Horizonte.
Magali (1963) - Sweet girl, sweet and simple but great hunger. He
wants to eat everything in sight. It was also created based on a
namesake daughter of Mauricio. Likes to eat a lot, and everyone,
making it sometimes even selfish. It's best friend Monica.
Walt Disney
58
W
alt Disney was born on December 5,
1901 in Chicago Illinois, to his father
Elias Disney, and mother Flora Call
Disney. Walt was one of five children, four boys
and a girl.
Walt began to love, and appreciate nature and wildlife, and family and
community, which were a large part of agrarian living. Though his father
could be quite stern, and often there was little money, Walt was
encouraged by his mother, and older brother, Roy to pursue his talents.
During the fall of 1918, Disney attempted to enlist for military service.
Rejected because he was under age, only sixteen years old at the time.
Instead, Walt joined the Red Cross and was sent overseas to France, where
he spent a year driving an ambulance and chauffeuring Red Cross officials.
His ambulance was covered from stem to stern, not with stock camouflage,
but with Disney cartoons.
59
In 1932, the production entitled Flowers
and Trees (the first color cartoon) won
Walt the first of his studio's Academy
Awards. In 1937, he released The Old
Mill, the first short subject to utilize the
multi-plane camera technique.
Walt Disney's dream of a clean, and organized amusement park, came true,
as Disneyland Park opened in 1955. Walt also became a television pioneer,
Disney began television production in 1954, and was among the first to
present full-color programming with his Wonderful World of Color in 1961.
Walt Disney is a legend; a folk hero of the 20th century. His worldwide
popularity was based upon the ideals which his name represents:
imagination, optimism, creation, and self-made success in the American
tradition. He brought us closer to the future, while telling us of the past, it
is certain, that there will never be such as great a man, as Walt Disney.
60
Ziraldo
Z
iraldo Alves Pinto was born on October 24,
in the town of Caratinga, in the State of
Minas Gerais. He is the eldest of a family
of seven brothers. His name comes is a combination
of the names of his mother Zizinha and his father
Geraldo. This is how Zi-raldo was conceived - a
unique name.
In the following year he got married to Dona Vilma, after seven years of
courtship. The couple has three children, Daniela, Fabrizia and Antônio, and
four grandchildren.
Ziraldo loves drawing since a very tender age. He used to draw everywhere
- on the sidewalks, walls, classrooms... Another passion of his since
childhood is reading. He would read whatever fell into his hands: Monteiro
Lobato, Viriato Correa, Clemente Luz (The Magician), and all the comics
that were then published. By that time, upon reading the pages of his first
comic book, he felt that this is where his future would be.
Ziraldo's career started in the magazine ''Era Uma Vez'' with monthly
contributions. In1954 he started working in the newspaper A Folha de
Minas with a humor page. Coincidentally, this was the same newspaper to
publish his first drawing in 1939, when he was just six years old!
61
Ziraldo made posters for several Brazilian movies including Os Fuzis, Os
Cafajestes, Selva Trágica, Os Mendigos, etc. In Rio de Janeiro Ziraldo
became one of the most well-known and acclaimed graphic artists in Brazil
and around the world.
Due to its diversity, it is not possible to limit his work to the graphic arts
alone, though. He is an artist that along the years developed several facets
of his talent. Ziraldo is also a painter, poster artist, cartoonist,
caricaturist, journalist, author of plays, and writer.
In the 60's his cartoons and political strips started showing in magazine O
Cruzeiro and newspaper Jornal do Brasil. Characters like Jeremias, o Bom,
the Supermãe and later the Mineirinho, became extremely popular.
Also in the early 60's his childhood dream came true: Ziraldo became a
comics author and launched the first Brazilian comics book by a single
author. The main character was one-legged Saci Pererê, an important
mythical figure in the Brazilian folklore. Other characters of this gang
included a small Indian and several animals of the Brazilian fauna such as a
leopard,a jabuti (land turtle), an armadillo, a rabbit and an owl. Turma do
Pererê was a landmark in the history of comics books in Brazil.
In 1964, when the military took over the government, the magazine was
closed down. It was too nationalistic to survive the fascist coup censorship
that happened in Brazil. Nevertheless, these characters were so typically
Brazilian that they resisted the hard military years. In 1973 Editora
Primor, a publishing house in Rio de Janeiro would re-edit in3 albums a
selection of the best stories of Saci Pererê and his gang under the name- A
Turma do Pererê. The stories were incorporated into the best teaching
books published in the country, helping the Brazilian children to better
know and understand their own culture.
62
During the Military Dictatorship period ( 1964-1984 ), Ziraldo participated
was part of an intense resistance effort against repression. Together with
other humorists he founded the most important non-conformist newspaper
in the history of Brazilian press, O Pasquim. Ziraldo considers O Pasquim to
be the best seller of post-'68 humorists.
With the edition of the AI - 5, an act that restrained civil liberties during
the Military Revolution, many Brazilians that were against the regime tried
to hide and escape from imprisonment. Ziraldo spent the night helping to
hide his friends and did not worry about himself. On the day right after
the enactment of the infamous AI-5 he was arrested in his home, and taken
to the Forte de Copacabana, accused of being a dangerous element.
In the year of 1969 the artist received very important awards. He won
the International Oscar of Humor in the 32nd International Exposition of
Caricatures in Brussels, and the Merghantealler Award, the highest honor
granted to the free press in Latin America by the International Press
Association in Caracas, Venezuela. He was invited to draw the annual
UNICEF poster -- the first time a Latin artist was granted the honor.
Also in the year of 1969 he published his first book for children, FLICTS.
It is the story of a color that could not find its place in this world. In this
booked he used lots of colors and a minimum of words. The U.S. Embassy in
Brazil gave a copy of the book to the American astronauts that first
stepped on the moon when they visited Brazil. Neil Armstrong, one of the
astronauts, was touched when he read the book, and wrote to the author:
"The moon is FLICTS".
63
In the 70's, when his work was already acclaimed,
Ziraldo went on opening new doors in Brazil and
around the world. Since 1972 his works have always
been selected by magazines Graphis Annual and
Graphis Porter.
64
Ziraldo's art is part of our everyday life, and his works can be identified
in famous logos such as the one used by Telerj (Rio de Janeiro's phone
company), in matchboxes that soon became collector's items, posters for
the charity fund-raising Feira da Providência, hundreds of T-shirts,
symbols for campaigns, etc. Ziraldo is always involved in new projects, and
one of the novelties to come is the magazine Bundas (Buttocks), a humorous
counterpart to the ostentatious Caras, a magazine dedicated to the
lifestyle of the rich and famous. "Those who showed their butts in Caras
will never show their faces in Buttocks"...
Henfil
H
enfil represented a major reference in
the Brazilian scene during the decade of
60 until 80. During this time, he was part
of the famous newspaper "The Quibbler" and was
the author of several unforgettable characters as
"Ceferino", "Blackbird", "Bode Orellana", "Rice
Powder," among others without forgetting the
terrible "Fradinhos" moreover also excelled as a
journalist and writer.
In 1970, Henfil launched its first magazine "The Fradinhos" with his most
famous, with its characteristic and striking. His amazing drawings had that
magic touch. With a few simple strokes, like a doodle or sketch of a
character to be drawn, Henfil could build the world of his caricatures using
political humor, critical, severe his characters typically Brazilian.
65
An example of this was when the singer Elis Regina in 1972, agreed to do a
presentation to the Brazilian Army. Henfil wasted no time in "The
Quibbler" published a cartoon burying the singer, calling her a "ruler" along
with other personalities, who according to his viewpoint, were also treats
the regime because of their personal interests, such as Roberto Carlos,
Pelé, Paul Gracindo Tarcisio Meira and Marilia Pera. Naturally, Elis disliked
and protested vehemently against the charge. Sure enough, the Henfil
buried again.
Chronicles the famous "Letters from Mother," for example, made several
references to the brother who was exiled Valek. Publicly exposing your
family drama, the dark side of the country and also with the false
impression that the military went from persecuted for political opinion. In
1977, Henfil began collaborating with the magazine "Isto É", weekly, and
recalled in its articles of Valek, her brother.
Henfil also not confined to the drawings, dabbled with cinema, theater
and television, getting to work on Rede Globo, one of the editors of the
defunct TV program Woman.
He also wrote several publications, always marking its social and political,
such as: "Diary of a cururacha" (1976), "Hiroshima, my mood" (1976), "Ten
in mood" (compilation, 1984), "Direct Elections Now " (1984), "Fradim
Liberation" (1984) and "How do political humor" 1984.
According to the authors, it was Henfil monitored, since that time, the
security organs of the dictatorship, being brother of Valek (Herbert José
de Sousa), who was then a leader of the "Popular Action" and had been
arrested several times. In 1969, he left and came to Minas Rio de Janeiro
to work in the "Journal of Brazil" and the newspaper "The Quibbler" when
his name came to be really known throughout Brazil.
66
At that time the country was going through a political turmoil with the
military taking power and imposing a dictatorship fierce especially in art
class and it was in this scenario that Henfil began to stand out, along with
other cartoonists and journalist of "The Quibbler" as Jaguar, Ziraldo,
Millor Fernandes, Sérgio Cabral, Tarso de Castro, among others. Henfil was
a hemophiliac, like his two brothers Herbert (Valek) and Mário Francisco
(Chico Mario), who through the blood transfusion ended up contracting the
AIDS virus. Because of this, Henfil, over the years became increasingly
with his failing health.
Also that year, the other brother died Henfil, the violinist and composer
Chico Mario who fought hard for the Brazilian instrumental music. He died
on March 14, 1988.
But the struggle Henfil somehow also continued at the hands of his
brother, Joseph Valek or Herbert de Souza, who joined the forces that
resulted in the "impeachment" of President Fernando Collor and struggled
immensely by "Citizen Action against Poverty and for Life, "a movement in
favor of the poor and excluded. Betinho died in 1997, has also severely
debilitated by AIDS.

Jim Davis
W
as born in July 14, 1945 in Marion, Indiana,
Jim Davis grew up on a small farm with his
dad, Jim Sr., who raised Black Angus cows, his
brother Dave, and 25 cats that relied on the hospitality
of Jim's mother, Betty.
After college, Davis did a two-year stint with a local advertising agency
and met and married his wife, Carolyn, a gifted singer and elementary
school teacher.
Then he created a comic strip about a character named Gnorm Gnat. The
strip ran in one Indiana newspaper, but when Davis tried to sell it to a
national comic strip syndicate he was told, "It's funny. But bugs? Who can
relate to a bug?" After five years of drawing Gnorm, Davis drew a giant
foot that fell out of the sky, crushing Gnorm in his last comic appearance.
Davis noticed that there were numerous comic strips about dogs, but few
about cats -- even though the world is full of cat lovers. He combined that
knowledge with his own memories of the 25 farm cats he grew up with, and
Garfield, a fat, lazy, lasagna-loving, cynical cat became his formula for
success. Garfield began syndication in 41 newspapers June 19, 1978.
Ironically, Davis has no cats; his wife, Carolyn, is allergic.
68
Early on, Davis decided against using topical
references in the strip. "It was a conscious
effort to include everyone as readers," he
explains. For that reason, Garfield avoids any
social or political comment, as well. "Besides,"
says Davis, "my grasp of the world situation
isn't that firm anyway. For years I thought
OPEC was a denture adhesive."
For Davis, life with Garfield is very simple: "If we take care of the cat,
the cat will take care of us." And, by nurturing and keeping fresh every
aspect of Garfield's design, attitude and entertainment quality, Davis has
created not only the fastest-growing comic strip in the world, but also
dozens of best-selling books that have been translated into 26 languages, a
CBS television series and 13 prime-time specials, and a wide range of
Garfield merchandise sold in 69 countries.
69
approves each piece of Garfield art before it leaves the studio. With such
attention to detail, Davis has been able to maintain the quality of the
Garfield character that now appears on thousands of products sold all over
the world. Of all the Garfield books published by Ballantine Books, 33 have
appeared on The New York Times Best Sellers list; 11 titles hit number one
and seven books appeared simultaneously on The New York Times list in
1983.
In 1982 Davis' son, James Alexander, was born. Spending time with his
teen-age son is one of the things Jim does when he isn't at the drawing
board. His other hobbies are golf, fishing, chess, sandwiches and good
friends.
In 1981 and 1986, the National Cartoonists Society named Davis Best
Humor strip Cartoonist of the Year. In 1985, the NCS gave him the Elzie
Segar award for outstanding contributions made in the cartoon industry,
and in 1990, the NCS bestowed upon Davis the prestigious Reuben award
for outstanding strip of the year.
Davis has won four Emmy awards from the Academy of Television Arts and
Sciences for writing in the Outstanding Animated Program category for
"Garfield on the Town" (1983), "Garfield in the Rough" (1984), "Garfield's
Halloween Adventure" (1985), and "Garfield's Babes & Bullets" (1989). Each
one of the 13 Garfield prime-time specials created for CBS-TV has been
nominated for an Emmy. On top of all that, "Garfield and Friends," a popular
animated series created for Saturday morning television, debuted in 1988.
"Garfield and Friends" can be seen in syndication around the globe.
Davis' time and energy have not been devoted exclusively to cartooning
and Garfield. He is also an active environmentalist: In 1990, the National
Arbor Day Foundation awarded him the Good Steward award for his
efforts in reforestation in his native state of Indiana. Davis is also involved
with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in a campaign promoting the
restoration of wetlands, as well as The National Wildlife Federation's
"Build a Schoolyard Habitat" campaign that encourages students to provide
wildlife environments on their school grounds. The American Association of
State Colleges and Universities awarded Davis the Distinguished Alumnus
award for 1985 for his dedication to the promotion of higher education. In
1991, both Ball State University and Purdue University awarded Jim
honorary doctorate degrees.

Bill Watterson
B
ill Watterson was born July 5, 1958 in
Washington, D.C. While attending
Kenyon College, Watterson drew
cartoons for the college paper, leading to a
position at the Cincinnati Post. Watterson
wanted to draw comic strips and began trying to
syndicate his original creation, Calvin and
Hobbes, a cartoon about a rambunctious boy and his imaginary friend.
Cartoonist, was Born July 5, 1958, in Washington, D.C. When he was 6
years old, Bill Watterson moved with his father James, a patent attorney,
and his mother, Kathryn, to Chagrin Falls, Ohio. After the family settled in,
Kathryn soon won a seat on the city council. James Watterson would also
serve on the Chagrin Falls city council, but not until some 30 years later.
As a child, Bill Watterson—unlike his creation Calvin—"never had imaginary
animal friends," he later remembered. "I generally stayed out of trouble, I
did fairly well in school." He developed an early interest in drawing, and was
inspired by classic cartoonists like "Peanuts" creator Charles Schulz and
"Pogo" illustrator Walt Kelly.
In 1976, Watterson enrolled at Ohio's Kenyon College, where he spent four
years drawing political cartoons for the Collegian campus newspaper (and a
few weeks during his sophomore year painting a copy of Michelangelo's
"Creation of Adam" on his dorm room ceiling). Following his 1980 graduation,
Watterson was immediately offered a job as an editorial cartoonist at the
Cincinnati Post. His editors were unimpressed with his work, however, and
less than a year later Watterson found himself unemployed and living back
home with his parents. He decided to abandon political cartoons (he was not
particularly interested in politics anyway) and return to his first love: comic
strips.
The next few years proved mostly discouraging. Watterson sent his strips
to countless newspapers and received nothing but rejection slips. For a
time, he took an unhappy job designing advertisements for car dealerships
and grocery stores. This period in his life was important, he later said,
because it proved to him that the substance of his work mattered more
than money. "To endure five years of rejection to get a job requires either
a faith in oneself that borders on delusion, or a love of the work," he told
71
the 1990 graduates of his alma mater in a commencement speech. "I loved
the work."
A
fter experimenting with
several different characters,
Watterson developed a strip
called "Calvin and Hobbes." It starred
Calvin, a rambunctious first-grader
who sounded "like a 6-year-old
psychotic on Ritalin one day and a Yale
lit grad the next," as one journalist put
it, and Hobbes, a stuffed tiger who
came to life only when alone with Calvin. Universal Press Syndicate bought
the strip in 1985, giving Watterson a national audience.
With the strip's popularity exploding, Universal Press Syndicate was eager
to produce and sell "Calvin and Hobbes" merchandise. Watterson refused.
Merchandising, he said, "would turn my characters into television hucksters
and T-shirt sloganeers and deprive me of characters that actually
expressed my own thoughts." That's why there are no official "Calvin and
Hobbes" toys or t-shirts, though unauthorized reproductions of the
characters still abound. "I clearly miscalculated how popular it would be to
show Calvin urinating on a Ford logo," Watterson once quipped, referring to
the popular bootleg car window decals.
72
profile and declines most interview and media requests. He says he has no
regrets about ending the strip when he did. "It's always better to leave
the party early," he said in a rare email interview with the Cleveland Plain
Dealer in 2010. "If I had rolled along with the strip's popularity and
repeated myself for another five, 10 or 20 years, the people now 'grieving'
for 'Calvin and Hobbes' would be wishing me dead and cursing newspapers
for running tedious, ancient strips like mine instead of acquiring fresher,
livelier talent. And I'd be agreeing with them."

Dead e The Vampire Diaries.
problemas.

Mariana
M
eu nome é Mariana Cayres, tenho 14 anos e
tranquilidade e sossego em qual aqui me encontro.
Para me definir melhor, tenho cabelos e olhos castanhos, pele clara e

meu time do coração: Corinthians!
idade falei minha primeira mentira. Meu tio Erinaldo residia conosco e era
são paulino, sempre gostou muito de crianças. Ele sempre me fazia
meus doces.
79
Ela mesmo me
para me dedicar novamente à escola. Encontrava-me meio perdida, pois

avós maternos me adoram e eu amo eles, meu avô Pedro e minha avó Neusa
pratiquei futebol, karatê, natação e Boxe, mas atualmente me exercito no
Parque Infantil.
82
Devido a muitas

dinheiro.

SNOW WHITE
A
t the beginning of the story, a queen sits sewing at an open
window during a winter snowfall when she pricks her finger with
her needle, causing three drops of blood fall onto the snow on the
ebony window frame. Admiring the beauty of the resulting color
combination, she says to herself: "Oh, how I wish that I had a daughter
that is as white as snow, as red as blood, and as black as that wood of the
window frame". Soon after, the queen indeed gives birth to a baby girl as
white as snow, as red as blood, and with hair as black as ebony. They name
her Snow White, and not long after, the queen dies.
After a year has passed, the King takes a new wife, who is beautiful but
also unutterably wicked and vain. The new Queen possesses a Magic Mirror
which she asks every morning: "Magic mirror in my hand, who is the fairest
in the land?". The mirror always replies: "My Queen, you are the fairest in
the land." The Queen is always pleased with that, because the magic mirror
never lies. But, when Snow White reaches the age of seven, she becomes as
beautiful as the day and even more beautiful than the Queen and when the
Queen asks her mirror, it responds: "My Queen, you are the fairest here so
true. But Snow White is a thousand times more beautiful than you.
This gives the queen a great shock, and she becomes yellow and green with
envy, and from that hour her heart turns against Snow White, and with
every following day she hates Snow White more and more. Envy and pride,
like ill weeds, grow in her heart taller every day, until she has no peace day
or night. The Queen orders a huntsman to take Snow White into the
deepest woods to be killed. She demands as proof that Snow White is dead,
he returns with her lungs and liver. The huntsman takes Snow White into
the forest. After raising his knife, he finds himself unable to kill her as she
sobs heavily and begs him: "Oh, dear huntsman, don't kill me! Leave me with
my life, I will run into the forest and never come back!". The huntsman
leaves her behind alive, convinced that the girl would be eaten by some wild
animal. He instead brings the Queen the lungs and liver of a young boar,
which is prepared by the cook and eaten by the Queen.
85
After wandering through the forest for days, Snow White discovers a tiny
cottage belonging to a group of seven Dwarfs. Since no one is at home, she
eats some of the tiny meals, drinks some wine and then tests all the beds.
Finally the last bed is comfortable enough for her and she falls asleep.
When the Seven Dwarfs return home, they immediately become aware that
someone sneaked in secretly, because everything in their home is in
disorder. During their loud discussion about who sneaked in, they discover
the sleeping Snow White. The girl wakes up and explains to them what
happened and the Dwarfs take pity on her, saying: "If you will keep house
for us, and cook, make beds, wash, sew, and knit, and keep everything clean
and orderly, then you can stay with us, and you shall have everything that
you want." They warn her to be careful when alone at home and to let no
one in when they are away delving in the mountains.
Next morning the Queen consults her mirror anew and the mirror reveals
Snow White's survival. Now infuriated, the Queen dresses as a comb seller
and convinces Snow White to take a beautiful one as a present. She
brushes Snow White's hair with a poisoned comb and the girl faints again,
but she is revived by the Dwarfs. And the next morning the mirror tells the
Queen, that Snow White is still 'a thousand times more beautiful' than its
mistress. Now the Queen nearly has a heart attack in shock and rage. As a
third and last try, she secretly consults the darkest magic and makes a
poisoned apple, and in the disguise of a farmer's wife, she offers it to
Snow White.
The girl is, at first, hesitant to accept it, so the Queen cuts the apple in
half, eating the white (harmless) part and giving the red (poisoned) part to
Snow White. The girl eagerly takes a bite and falls into a state of
suspended animation, causing the Queen to triumph. This time, the Dwarfs
are unable to revive the girl, because they can't find the source of Snow
White's poor health and, assuming that she is dead, they place her in a
glass coffin.
Time passes, and a Prince traveling through the land sees Snow White. He
strides to her coffin, and enchanted by her beauty, instantly falls in love
with her. The Dwarfs succumb to his entreaties to let him have the coffin,
and as his servants carry the coffin away, they stumble on some roots. The
tremor caused by the stumbling causes the piece of poisoned apple to
86
dislodge from Snow White's throat, awakening her. The Prince then
declares his love for her, and soon a wedding is planned. The couple invites
every Queen and King to come to the wedding party, including Snow
White's stepmother. Meanwhile, the Queen, still believing that Snow White
is dead, again asks her magical mirror who is the fairest in the land. The
mirror says: "You, my Queen, are fair so true. But the young Queen is a
thousand times fairer than you."
Appalled in disbelief and with her heart full of fear and doubts, the
Queen is, at first, hesitant to accept the invitation, but she eventually
decides to go. Not knowing that this new queen was indeed her
stepdaughter, she arrives at the wedding, and her heart fills with the
deepest of dread when she realizes the truth. As a punishment for her
attempted murders, a pair of glowing-hot iron shoes are brought forth with
tongs and placed before the Queen. She is forced to step into the burning
shoes and to dance until she drops dead

OS TRÊS PORQUINHOS
E
Sejam sempre unidos! - desejou a mãe.
do novo lar.
casas. Contudo, as casas seriam próximas.
- Nossa! Você ainda não acabou! Não está nem na metade! Nós agora vamos
almoçar e depois brincar. – disse irônico, o porquinho do meio.
risadinhas, continuou a trabalhar, preparava o cimento e montava as paredes
- Então eu vou soprar e soprar e farei a casinha voar.
velho.
Logo o lobo chegou e tornou a atormentá-los:
abalava a sólida casa.

e estava subindo no telhado.
