BACTERIAL ACTIVITY OF Copaifera sp. FROM Staphylococcus spp. ISOLATED
FROM BOVINE MASTITIS
ABSTRACT
To improve the health status of the mammary gland, is essential to the control of
clinical or subclinical mastitis. The use of antibiotics is one of the measures taken to
treat pathogenesis, but studies show a high percentage of resistant strains, with
selection of micro-organisms due to inappropriate use of antibiotics and not
monitoring, thus becoming a risk to public health . The oil-copal resin is a natural
product and antimicrobial activity has been reported by several researchers.
Considering the treatment of mastitis as segment of a sanitary control aimed to
evaluate the potential of in vitro antimicrobial activity of extracts of copaiba oil against
Staphylococcus spp isolated from bovine mastitis using it for oil extracted from
Copaíba in concentrations of 50% , 25%, 12.5%, 6.25%, 3.125% and 1.56%, tested
against three different sets of Staphylococcus which were coagulase-negative
Staphylococcus (STAPHCN), Staphylococcus aureus (STAPHA) and coagulase-
positive staphylococci (STACP), which can be observed satisfactory results in
respect to its front inhibition of the microorganisms tested, highlighting in particular
the results obtained with STACP where approximately 50% of the strains were
susceptible to the growth inhibitory effect at concentrations copaiba oil greater than
25%, so emphasizing a possible bactericidal action of copaiba oil. The study also
revealed that copaiba oil has the potential to be evaluated as an alternative or
supplement to antibiotics for the treatment of mastitis in cattle.
