 A família Darling era… especial. Para começar, a babá
dos irmãos Wendy, Miguel e João era uma cachorra chamada Nana.
E para terminar, Wendy era amiga de Peter Pan, um garoto que
aparecia junto com a fada Sininho nos sonhos dela. Os dois
moravam na Terra do Nunca, um lugar onde as crianças não crescem.

T he Darling family was… special. To begin with, the nanny
for Wendy, Michael and John was a female dog named Nana.
And to finish, Wendy was a friend of Peter Pan’s, a boy who
appeared in her dreams with the fairy Tinker Bell. Both of them
lived in Never Land, a place where children don’t grow up.

 Nana não gostava de Peter e, logo que farejava o cheiro dele
no quarto das crianças, começava a latir. Uma vez, arrancou
a capa do garoto com uma mordida e a escondeu. Na noite seguinte,
Peter voltou lá com Sininho para pegar a capa de volta, mas os
dois fizeram tanto barulho que acordaram as crianças.

Nana didn’t like Peter and as soon as she sniffed that he was
in the children’s bedroom, she started barking. Once, she took off
his cape with a bite and hid it. The following night,
Peter returned there with Tinker Bell to get the cape back, but the
two of them made so much noise that they woke the children up.

 “Uau, é o Peter Pan!”, os meninos disseram quando o viram.
“Wendy, ele é do jeitinho que você nos contou. Exatamente igual!”
Peter adorava saber que tinha fãs, e logo eles se tornaram amigos.
Mas Sininho era muito ciumenta. Ela queria ser a única
amiga de Peter. Além disso, Wendy era tão bonita!

“Wow, it’s Peter Pan!” the boys said when they saw him.
“Wendy, he’s just like you told us. Exactly the same!”
Peter loved to know he had fans and soon they became friends.
But Tinker Bell was very jealous. She wanted to be Peter’s only
friend. On top of that, Wendy was so pretty!

 “Querem vir comigo para a Terra do Nunca?”, Peter perguntou
para as crianças quando elas pararam de conversar e brincar.
“Sim!”, respondeu Miguel. “Mas como podemos ir se não sabemos voar?”
“A Sininho sabe”, respondeu Peter.
A fadinha reclamou um pouco, mas depois aceitou, e então...

“Do you want to come with me to Never Land?” Peter asked
them when they finished talking and playing.
“Yes!” answered Michael. “But how can we go if we can’t fly?”
“Tinker Bell knows how,” answered Peter.
The little fairy protested a little, but later accepted, and then...

 Com sua varinha mágica, Sininho jogou poeira de fada nas crianças.
“Agora, voem!”, Peter pediu, e todos saíram pela janela.
A viagem foi maravilhosa: passaram através das nuvens, brincaram
com os passarinhos e viram as baleias nadando lá embaixo no mar.
Quando estavam sobrevoando uma ilha, Peter anunciou:
“Chegamos na minha terra!”.

With her magic wand, Tinker Bell threw fairy dust over the children.
“Now, fly!” Peter asked, and all of them left through the window.
The trip was wonderful: they went through clouds, played
with little birds and saw whales swimming down in the sea.
When they were flying over an island, Peter announced:
“We’ve arrived at my land!”

 “Mas não vamos aterrissar ainda”, ele explicou. “Lá embaixo está
o navio do Capitão Gancho e, se ele nos vir, vai nos matar!”
Gancho era o mais cruel e maior covarde de todos os piratas.
Numa briga com Peter, ele perdera sua mão direita, que depois foi
comida por um crocodilo. Desde então, o bicho vivia seguindo o
pirata, porque queria comer o resto dele.

“But we are not landing just yet,” he explained. “Down there is
Captain Hook’s ship and if he sees us, he will kill us!”
Hook was the cruelest and biggest coward of all the pirates.
In a fight with Peter he had lost his right hand, which was later
eaten by a crocodile. After that, the animal kept following the
pirate because it wanted to eat the rest of him.

 “Ainda bem que o crocodilo engoliu um relógio”, Gancho costumava
contar para seus piratas, “então quando ouço um tique-taque, sei
que ele está por perto. O bicho não vai me deixar em paz!”
No lugar da mão, o capitão tinha um gancho que planejava
usar para pegar Peter quando conseguisse achar o esconderijo dele.

“Luckily the crocodile swallowed a clock,” Hook used
to tell his pirates, “so when I hear a tick-tock, I know
it’s near. That beast won’t leave me in peace!”
Instead of his hand, the captain had a hook which he was planning
to use in order to catch Peter when he could find his hideout.

 As crianças continuaram voando em silêncio até que Peter mandou
que aterrissassem entre algumas raízes grossas. De lá, foram
até a casa da árvore dos Meninos Perdidos. Era onde eles estavam
vivendo desde que Peter os tinha encontrado.
“Vamos ficar aqui”, ele explicou.

The children continued flying in silence until Peter told them
to land between some thick roots. From there, they went
to the Lost Boys’ tree house. It was where they had been
living since Peter had found them.
“We are staying here,” he explained.

 A Terra do Nunca era um lugar mágico. Lá, guiadas pelos
Meninos Perdidos, as crianças conheceram sereias, índios nativos,
os caminhos das fadas... Elas aprenderam a nadar e a subir
nas árvores mais altas. Wendy adorava cozinhar e adotou
um filhotinho de lobo como animal de estimação.

Never Land was a magical place. There, guided by the
Lost Boys, the children met the mermaids, the native indians,
the fairies’ paths... They learned how to swim and climb
the highest trees. Wendy loved cooking and adopted
a little wolf cub as a pet.

 Enquanto isso, Gancho descobriu que tudo que ele precisava fazer
para encontrar Peter Pan era seguir a luz de Sininho. Então, numa noite,
finalmente ele chegou na casa da árvore com seus piratas. Quando
viu que Peter não estava, ficou furioso! Ele então acorrentou
as crianças e as levou para seu navio.

Meanwhile Hook had found out that all he had to do
to find Peter Pan was to follow Tinker Bell’s light. So one night
he arrived at the tree house with his pirates at last. When he
saw Peter was not there, he got furious! He then put
the children in chains and took them to his ship.

 Quando Peter voltou, encontrou Sininho presa num pote de vidro.
Ela contou o que tinha acontecido e eles imediatamente voaram
para salvar os amigos. Quando chegou no navio, Peter ficou
horrorizado de ver que Gancho estava quase jogando as crianças
no mar, com as correntes e tudo mais.

When Peter returned, he found Tinker Bell trapped in a glass jar.
She told him what had happened and they immediately flew
to save his friends. When Peter landed on the ship, he got
horrified to see that Hook was about to throw the children
into the sea, with their chains on and everything else.

 Então, Peter teve uma ideia genial. Escondido pela própria sombra,
ele foi pé ante pé, batendo no chão do navio com uma faquinha
para fazer “tique-taque, tique-taque”.
Quando o Capitão Gancho ouviu aquele som, achou que o crocodilo
estava a bordo e pulou no mar. Seus piratas fugiram junto com ele,
porque também estavam morrendo de medo.

So Peter had a brilliant idea. Hidden by his own shadow,
he tip-toed along the deck tapping on the floor with a little knife,
which sounded like “tick-tock, tick-tock.”
When Captain Hook heard that, he thought the crocodile
was on board and jumped in the sea. His pirates ran away with him,
because they were also scared to death.

 Peter Pan e Sininho soltaram os amigos. Desamarraram as cordas
do navio e lentamente navegaram para o alto-mar. Nunca mais
o Capitão Gancho ou os piratas dele foram vistos na Terra do Nunca.
Algumas pessoas dizem que foram comidos pelos crocodilos.
Outras contam que os feiticeiros do mar os transformaram em pedras.

Peter Pan and Tinker Bell freed their friends. They all untied the
ship’s lines and slowly sailed out to the high seas. Nobody ever
saw Captain Hook or his pirates in Never Land again.
Some say that they were eaten by the crocodiles.
Others say that the sea wizards turned them into stones.

 A verdade é que, depois do susto, as crianças Darling começaram
a sentir saudades dos pais.
“Eles devem estar tristes”, João dizia. “Vamos voltar!”
“Ah, não!”, Peter reclamava. “Vocês vão crescer e se tornar adultos.
E vão esquecer como se brinca!”
“Não, Peter!”, Wendy respondeu. “Isso nunca vai acontecer.”

The truth is that after the fright, the Darling children started
missing their parents.
“They must be sad,” John used to say. “Let’s go back!”
“Oh no!” Peter complained. “You will grow up and become adults.
And you’ll forget how to play!”
“No, Peter!” Wendy answered. “That’ll never happen.”

 As crianças insistiram tanto que por fim Peter concordou
em deixá-las voltar para casa.
“A Sininho vai levá-los”, ele disse uma manhã.
A fada então jogou o pozinho mágico sobre as crianças e
imediatamente elas se viram em casa, abraçando
os pais e Nana, que não parava de latir, feliz da vida!

The children insisted so much that Peter eventually agreed
to let them go home.
“Tinker Bell will take you,” he said one morning.
The fairy then threw her magical dust over them and
instantly the children found themselves at home, hugging
their parents and Nana, who couldn’t stop barking, full of joy!
