Public Hearing April 25 on Proposed Moose Hunt
The Vermont Fish & Wildlife Board will hold a public hearing
Wednesday, April 25, on the proposed regulation for the 2012
moose hunt. The hearing will be held at 7:30pm in St. Leos Hall,
109 South Main Street, Waterbury.
A total of 385 moose hunting permits will be issued for
Vermonts 20th annual regular October moose season under a
proposed regulation before the Vermont Fish & Wildlife Board.
The board voted unanimously at their February meeting on the
proposal presented by Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department biolo-
gists that allocates moose hunting permits in 17 of the states 26
Wildlife Management Units.
The 385 permits proposed by the department represent a slight
decrease from the 405 permits issued last year. Under the propos-
al, hunters are expected to harvest over 200 animals during the
Oct. 20-25 season.
Given Vermonts track record of hunting success rates, this
proposal allows us to achieve moose population goals for various
parts of the state that have been set in the 10-Year Big Game
Management Plan, said biologist Cedric Alexander, Vermonts
moose project leader. Its the intent of this proposal to allow slow
population growth in some regions of the state and stabilize moose
numbers in other parts of the state.
Alexander estimates Vermont has 2,500 to 3,000 moose state-
wide with the greatest concentration occurring in the Northeast
Kingdom.
Vermont also holds a special archery-only moose season.
Fifty permits will be awarded for the Oct. 1-7, 2012 archery moose
season.
Moose hunting permit lottery applications, $10 for residents
and $25 for nonresidents, will be available on Vermont Fish &
Wildlifes website (www.vtfishandwildlife.com) in early May.
Printed applications are scheduled to be available at license agents
in early June.
Two lotteries will be held, one for the regular hunting season
and one for the archery season. Winners of either lottery will pur-
chase resident hunting permits for $100 or nonresident hunting
permits for $350. Hunters also will have the option to bid on five
moose hunting permits in an auction to be announced later.

Youth Turkey Hunting This Weekend
Turkey Hunting Safety
Tips from VTF&W
Not even a turkey would mistake a hunter for a turkey.
Vermonts youth turkey hunting weekend is April 28-29,
and the regular spring season is May 1-31. The Vermont Fish
& Wildlife Department points out that while spring turkey
hunting-related shootings are rare (last years season was
incident-free) precautions are needed.
Camouflage or drab colored clothing is almost mandatory to
outwit a keen sighted gobbler. Unfortunately, camouflage has
the same affect on other hunters as it has on the turkeys.
With a handful of exceptions, all of our incidents have been
caused by hunters who dont positively identify the target
before they pull the trigger, said Chris Saunders, Hunter
Education Coordinator. And the victim is usually another
hunter, often a friend, trying to stalk a turkey call.
With the opening of spring turkey hunting season near, the
Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department urges hunters to review
the following safety tips:
- Never stalk a gobbling turkey. Your chances of getting
close are poor, and you may be sneaking up on another hunt-
er.
- Dont be patriotic. Avoid red, white and blue and black
too. A tom turkeys head has similar colors.
- Stick with hen calls. A gobbler call might draw in other
hunters.
- Avoid unnecessary movement. This alerts turkeys and
attracts hunters.
- Dont hide so well that you impair your field of vision
- Wrap your turkey in blaze orange for the hike back to the
car.
- Always sit with your back against a tree trunk, big log or
a boulder that is wider than your body. This protects you from
being accidentally struck by pellets fired from behind you.
- Place decoys on the far side of a tree trunk or a rock. This
prevents you from being directly in the line of fire should
another hunter mistakenly shoot at your decoy.
- Never shoot unless youre absolutely sure of your target.
Since only turkeys with beards are legal during the spring
season, lack of positive identification could result in shooting
an illegal bird, or worse, another hunter.
- Consider wearing hunter orange while moving from set-up
to set-up. Take it off when you are in position.
Remember, only turkeys stalk turkeys! Hunt smart. Hunt
safe. Wear orange.
Vermont Fish & Wildlife Acquires Two New Fishing Access Areas
Youth turkey hunting weekend is April 28-29
this year.
Youth turkey hunters must have landowner
permission to hunt on private land, whether or
not the land is posted. To be eligible, a resident
or nonresident youth must be age 15 or under.
The youth must have successfully completed a
hunter education course and possess a hunting
license, a turkey hunting license and a free youth turkey hunting
tag. The youth also must be accompanied by an unarmed adult
who holds a hunting license and is over 18 years of age. The youth
may take one bearded turkey during youth weekend and two
bearded turkeys in the regular May hunting season.
The regular spring turkey hunting season is May 1-31. Two
bearded turkeys may be taken, and all of Vermont is open to turkey
hunting during the youth weekend and regular spring
season. Shooting hours for both the youth and regular
spring turkey season are one half hour before sunrise to
12:00 noon.
A shotgun or bow and arrow may be used in the youth
turkey or regular spring turkey hunting seasons. Shot
size must be no larger than #2 and no smaller than #8.
The 2011 Turkey Harvest Report, which includes the
number of turkeys taken in each town, is posted on Vermont Fish
& Wildlifes website (www.vtfishandwildlife.com). Under
Hunting and Trapping, click on Big Game.
Vermont offers some of the best turkey hunting in New England
according to the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department. In 2011,
hunters took more than 4,700 turkeys in both the youth weekend
and regular May 1-31 seasons.
Anglers and boaters now have guaranteed access at two lake
sites -- one on Lake Champlain in South Hero, the other at
Maidstone Lake in the Northeast Kingdom. The Vermont Fish &
Wildlife Department acquired the properties, adding them to the
list of state-owned, free public fishing and boating access areas
around the state.
The land in South Hero was traditionally used as a boat access,
but had the potential to be sold, which threatened future use of a
critical access point to the lake on the west end of the Sandbar
Causeway. The Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department recently
purchased the property as a new state fishing and boating access
area for the public.
The new John Guilmette Fishing Access Area will serve a
large group of anglers and boaters, as well as duck hunters, by
providing year-round access at a key location on northern Lake
Champlain, said Fish & Wildlife Commissioner Patrick Berry.
When you launch your boat, you can go north in the Inland Sea,
or head south to the mouth of the Lamoille River, Malletts Bay, or
the main portion of the lake.
This site is critical because it is protected and allows boats
with deep drafts to easily launch, said Mike Wichrowski Land
and Facilities Coordinator for Fish & Wildlife. While anyone can
use the site today, we plan on improving the ramp, dock, and park-
ing layout. The design phase will be ongoing this summer, with
site improvements scheduled for next year.
Last month the Fish & Wildlife Department also acquired the
Maidstone Lake Access Area as part of a donation. The depart-
ment had been leasing the land for a number of years and has now
ensured public access in perpetuity.
Learn more about Vermonts fishing access areas at their web-
site (www.vtfishandwildlife.com) under the Fishing category of
subjects.
Excise taxes on fishing equipment, motorboat and small engine
fuels, import duties, and interest are collected and appropriated
from the Sport Fish Restoration and Boating Trust Fund by the
U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The Vermont Fish & Wildlife
Department currently uses these monies for acquiring land as well
as developing and maintaining boat and fishing access areas.
Historically, most of Vermonts existing fishing and boating
access areas were purchased with funds from the sale of fishing
licenses and the taxes on fishing equipment.
The Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department maintains over 170
developed fishing access areas. These sites provide public access
to waters in Vermont for shore fishing opportunities and launch-
ing of water craft. The department manages 135 access areas with
concrete or gravel ramps for launching boats. There are another
21 department access areas where non-motorized vessels can be
launched, and 18 access areas dedicated to shore fishing. All
access areas are open to hunting, trapping, fishing, and boating.
Vermont Launches Got Bats? Campaign
The Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department is
seeking information on summer bat colonies
around the state.
Vermonts cave-bat species continue to strug-
gle due to the deadly effects of White-Nose
Syndrome. As a result, two species were added
to the state endangered species list last July, the
little brown bat and the northern long-eared bat.
Little brown bats prefer to raise their young in
warm attics and barns over the summer. To learn
more about the size and location of colonies
around the state, the Fish & Wildlife is relying on
citizens to report groups of bats found in build-
ings this summer.
When White-nose Syndrome hit, Vermonters
were a tremendous help to the Fish & Wildlife
Department by reporting sick and dying bats,
says state wildlife technician Alyssa Bennett.
These reports helped us track the progression of
the disease. Now we are calling on Vermonters
again to help us monitor a species that lives so
close to many of us but has declined to only 5-10
percent of their former population. By mapping
summer colonies across the state, we hope to
gain better understanding of their health and
develop a plan for the little brown bats conser-
vation and recovery.
The Got Bats? campaign will continue
throughout the spring and summer. Vermonters
are urged to report bat colonies living in build-
ings by filling out a Bat Colony Reporting
form by going to You Can Help Vermonts
Bats on Vermont Fish & Wildlifes homepage

Denny Hamlin rallied Sunday when the days rst sunshine
changed the racing surface to his Toyotas liking and held off a hard
charging Martin Truex Jr. to win the STP 400 at Kansas Speedway.
Truex dominated most of the race, leading a race-high 173 laps
but had to settle for second, his third top-ve of the season but he
still hasnt won in 175 cup races. The win was the second of the
season for Hamlin and his rst at Kansas. Jimmie Johnson nished
third for Hendrick Motorsports, which has failed 14 straight times
to win Rick Hendricks milestone 200th race. The fourteen race
skunk for Hendrick is the longest for the team since going 15 races
without a win during the 2002-2003 seasons. The winless streak
began after Johnson won last October at Kansas. Matt Kenseth
nished fourth and teammate Greg Bife fresh of a win at Texas
nished fth.
It was James Bueschers day. Buescher pulled away in the
closing laps for a convincing 5.320-second victory over Timothy
Peters, who passed Brad Keselowski for the runner-up spot with
three laps left in Saturdays SFP 250 NASCAR Camping World
Truck Series race at Kansas Speedway. Buescher earned his rst
win in the series, to go with his maiden Nationwide Series vic-
tory at Daytona in February. It was the second straight victory for
Turner Motorsports, which sent Kasey Kahne to Victory Lane last
Saturday at Rockingham, with Buescher running second. Turner
Motorsports trucks are pretty awesome, Buescher said. Two in
a row is saying something. Having our rst win (for the team) last
week with Kasey, and running second to him, we wanted to come
here and win one for ourselves. Keselowski ran third followed
by Nelson Piquet, who has been strong of late, in fourth and Todd
Bodine fth. Hes been a factor all this year this year and when
we raced with him last year, Peters said of the race winner. Hes
going be the one to contend for a championship, I feel like, and the
RCR bunch are going to be ones to contend for the championship,
and I think we are, too. Dillon is fourth in the standings, 14 points
behind Peters and three behind third-place Justin Lofton.
Garage Garble
This is denitely not your fathers NASCAR Nationwide Series.
Its early, but race after race it seems like the days of NASCAR
Sprint Cup Series drivers dominating NASCAR Nationwide Se-
ries races are fading. For those currently embedded in todays pop
culture, heres this: The series today is full of young, Twitter-hap-
py, outgoing drivers who drive sporty cars, some of the muscle-car
variety. And theyre winning races. In bunches. Over the last nine
events, seven have been won by drivers who dont receive champi-
onship points in NASCAR Sprint Cup. Six of those victories have
come courtesy of NASCAR Nationwide Series driver champion-
ship contenders including last Friday nights win at Texas by
reigning series champion Ricky Stenhouse Jr. The other win was
the season opener at Daytona by NASCAR Camping World Truck
Series regular James Buescher, whos scheduled to compete in
nearly half the NASCAR Nationwide races this year as well. After
his win at Texas, Ricky Stenhouse Jr. cut signicantly into Elliott
Sadlers points lead. Heading into this open week, Sadlers advan-
tage has been trimmed from a season-high 25 points over second-
place Stenhouse to just four. But taking a closer look at their stat
line, the rivals closed quarters shouldnt be a surprise. Each driver
has two wins, four top ves and ve top 10s in the rst six races.
The difference comes down to Sadlers 12 bonus points to Sten-
houses 11 and the one Did Not Finish (DNF) by Stenhouse after
an incident on the last lap at Daytona. Stenhouse isnt the only big
mover in the standings. Danica Patrick, in her rst full series sea-
son, is knocking on the top-10 door. Following a season-best eight-
place nish (also her second-best career result) shes now 11th in
the standings, 15 points out of 10th a nice comeback considering
she was 26th following Daytona. The NASCAR Nationwide Se-
ries had an open week last weekend. Following this open week,
the series resumes racing at Richmond on April 27, which also is
Austin Dillons 22nd birthday. Hes the Sunoco Rookie of the Year
standings leader and is third in the standings.
It is no longer a question of if Nelson Piquet Jr. will win at NA-
SCARs national level, but when and where the victory will take
place. The Brazilian native who earned his rst career NCWTS
pole last weekend led an impressive 107 laps at Rockingham, be-
fore a pit road speeding penalty resulted in a seventh place nish.
Piquet advanced two spots in the series standings to sixth, only 21
points out of the lead.
What Theyre Saying
Now, full disclosure: I invited Tony here today because of
what he did on the track. But I was also hoping he would give me
some tips on the media, because hes got that quiet, reserved per-
sonality -- (laughter) -- and I was guring Id stay out of trouble if
Tony gave me some advice on that. But this was Tonys year.
And Smoke gave us one of the most dramatic nishes that we
have ever seen. After barely making the Chase, Tony took off, win-
ning an amazing four races in the post-season. And then came the
nal race in Miami -- a must-win. Tony went all out. Twice he
came from back of the pack, passing 118 cars -- sometimes three
wide. Tony said it felt like he passed half the state of Florida. But
in the end, he hung on to take the checkered ag and win the cham-
pionship with a tie-breaker. And Tony himself acknowledged he
didnt see it coming; nobody saw it coming. Weve all heard about
athletes who say theyre going to do what it takes to win it all. But
back in August, with the season winding down, Tony predicted he
wouldnt be able to pull it off. In fact, he said that if he did end up
winning the championship -- this is a quote Ill declare Im a
total bumbling idiot. Heres your chance, Tony. But I think Tonys
hero, the great A.J. Foyt, put it best when he said the reason Tony
won was because he drove the best race of his life, Period. And
he did it with the rest of these drivers on his tail: Remarks by the
President honoring 2011 Sprint Cup champion Tony Stewart at the
White House last week.

After a erce battle for the win at the ACT season opener at Lee
USA Speedway and a long off season, the pressure heats up as the
ACT Tour returns to Thunder Road for the second race of the 2012
season. Eight-time American Canadian Tour Late Model Stock Car
Champion Brian Hoar of Williston, VT topped the $200,000 mark
in career earnings with his win in the NH Governors Cup 150 at
Lee USA Speedway in Lee, NH on Sunday, April 15. Hoar se-
cured his 34th career ACT Late Model win in his Goss Dodge and
pocketed over $3,500 for car owner Rick Paya. His win brings his
career earnings to $200,074 for his 132 point counting event starts
to date, including point fund awards. He sits second on the all-
time ACT Late Model career earnings list, trailing seven-time ACT
Champion Jean-Paul Cyr with $219,957. Hoar began competing
on the ACT Late Model Tour during its inaugural season in 1992.
He secured at least one win each season through 2000, while earn-
ing ve titles. After taking several years off, he returned to ACT in
2009 to earn his 6th title and repeated in 2010 and 2011. He leads
most major ACT categories including career top ves and laps led.
Nick Sweet of Barre, VT, the former King of the Road and two-
time Merchants Bank 150 winner in 2010 and 2011, will look to
complete the impossible and win three Merchants Bank 150s in
a row. Gates open for the 14th Merchants Bank 150 at 10am on
Sunday, April 29, 2012. Post time is set for 1:00 pm.
For the Cup guys its on to Richmond International Raceway for
the 58th Annual Richmond 400 on Saturday night under the lights,

defending race winner in 2011dominating the event-leading 235 of
400 laps including the nal 84. Juan Pablo Montoya the defending

Brian Hoar Wins Second Straight
NH Governors Cup
Rookie Rosters Growing at Devils Bowl Speedway
ACT Looks to VP Fuel to Go Green in 2012
Eight-time American Canadian Tour Late
Model Champion Brian Hoar, of Williston,
claimed his second straight NH Governors
Cup 150 season opener at Lee USA
Speedway in Lee, NH on Sunday, April 15.
Hoar escaped a late race assault from multi-
time Lee USA Speedway Champion Wayne
Helliwell, Jr. of Dover, N.H. to earn the
win.
Jeff Taylor of Farmington, Maine led
early in the event after starting on the pole
with a +6 in ACTs plus/minus handicap
system. Helliwell worked his way from the
fifth starting position to take over the lead
on lap 10 and appeared dominant for the
next 60 laps. However, Ben Rowe of
Turner, Maine came from the 10th starting
position to run down Helliwell just before
the halfway mark. Rowe also appeared to
have the race in hand until Eddie MacDonald
of Rowley, Mass. took over the lead with
118 laps complete.
Hoar and Joey Polewarczyk, Jr. of
Hudson, N.H. came flying through the pack
after pitting around lap 117 for fresh tires.
Polewarczyk caught MacDonald on lap
130 but got into the back of him coming off
turn two sending them both to the rear. That
brought out the fourth caution of the event
and handed Hoar, who came from the 9th
starting spot, the lead.
Hoar led the remainder of the event, but
not without a battle with Helliwell. Helliwell
came back from a spin on lap 117 with
fresh tires and was all over the back bum-
per of Hoar during the final 20 laps. Hoar
would hold him off for the win, Helliwell
took second followed by sophomore driver
Austin Theriault from the 19th starting
spot, with Polewarczyk and 2011 ACT
Rookie of the Year Ben Ashline rounding
out the top five.
Taylor had to settle for sixth, followed by
MacDonald, seven-time ACT Champion
Jean-Paul Cyr, Jeff Labrecque, Jr., and Ray
Parent. The top ten were the only cars to
complete all 150 laps.
The race was completed in 1 hour, 23
minutes and 31 seconds with eight cau-
tions. A total of 41 cars attempted to qualify
for the 28 car field.
Brian Hoar is the first qualifier for the
Bond Auto ACT Invitational at Lee USA
Speedway on Saturday, September 22 at
New Hampshire Motor Speedway. Hoar is
a former NHMS winner as he claimed the
win in the 2011 ACT All-Star event last
August.
The American Canadian Tour heads to
Thunder Road International Speedbowl in
Barre for the Merchants Bank 150 on
Sunday, April 29. The Thunder Road sea-
son opener is precluded by the annual car
show in the Thunder Road pit area on
Saturday, April 28.
The American Canadian Tour (ACT) announced last week that
VP Racing Fuels (VP) would become the Official Fuel of ACT
for 2012. The ambitious program will begin a major effort on the
part of ACT to create both a more green environment, and
equally important, to begin to contain fuel expenses for over 400
Late Model race teams in the ACT system, and 100 competitors at
Thunder Road Intl Speedbowl in Barre.
The program will address the fuel needs of the ACT US, ACT
Series Castrol Quebec, and Thunder Road Intl Speedbowl in
Barre.
VPs C9, an unleaded racing fuel with no ethanol components,
will be introduced immediately as a spec fuel option in 2012 for
the ACT Castrol Series as well as for the ACT Late Models and for
all weekly divisions at Thunder Road. C9 will be permitted for use
immediately in the ACT Castrol Series. To allow for consumption
of leftover Sunoco 110, that fuel will be allowed only until June
30th on the Castrol Series.
In addition to C9, VP110 will also become a spec fuel option
available to U.S. Late Model teams competing in the ACT US and
Thunder Road Late Models. These two ACT/VP spec fuels and
the one remaining approved fuel will be permitted in the U.S.
throughout the 2012 season.
Tom Curley, President of the American Canadian Tour said,
The timing of establishing this relationship with VP is just about
perfect. The cost of fuel for everyone, not just racers, is continuing
to escalate. VP has helped to design a program for our racers by
introducing this spec fuel. We believe this will help address the
costs to racers, and at the same time help us become more environ-
mentally friendly. It follows closely our philosophy about cost
concerns, just like twelve years ago when we introduced the crate
motor, said Curley.
Testing of the fuel has been conducted at the headquarters of the
ACT crate motors, Butler & MacMaster in Hallowell, ME. We
were impressed with the comparative results. Our data showed
that C9 ran very clean, and actually created a couple pounds of
additional torque and horsepower from what we have been used to
seeing with these motors, said Dave MacMaster, the innovative
veteran motor builder of both the GM and Ford crate motors for
ACT since their beginning.
The VP program designed by Jim Kelly, Director of Racing Fuel
Sales for VP, has a variety of financial and incentive programs for
each of the ACT sanctioned affiliates. Beyond fuel cost savings to
the racers, VP has announced a VP Hard Charger program which
will issue free fuel certificates for five gallons of ACT/VP spec
fuel at every ACT US and Castrol Series event. The team that
improves their position the most in feature events, and has not won
an ACT or Castrol event in 2012, will be eligible. The same VP
Hard Charger program will be introduced to the Bond Auto Tiger
Sportsman division at Thunder Road in 2012.
VP Racing Fuels is very pleased to be involved with ACT and
its many affiliate tracks and programs. We have watched ACT
become innovative - implementing cost-saving measures for their
race teams, and taking a leadership role in asphalt short track rac-
ing over the past couple of decades. We hope that we can contrib-
ute to that continual effort with our ACT VP Racing Fuel pro-
grams. We look forward to working with the race teams and ACT
for many years, said Kelly. Our C9 ethanol-free unleaded is one
of our newest products. It makes great power at a very good price,
and in addition to working great in their ACT engines, racers will
find that C9 will perform really well in their off-road competition
snowmobiles, quads, and motocross bikes.

Rookie stock car drivers from around the northeast
will learn their craft on the asphalt half-mile at Devils
Bowl Speedway in West Haven this summer. The
tracks weekly NASCAR Whelen All-American Series
program has more than a dozen rookies registered to
date, with several more expected to enter by the sea-
son opening Spring Green event on Sunday, May 6.
The headline Bond Auto Parts Modified class has
freshman racers Joey Roberts, Andy Smith, and Jeff
Haskins, each with vastly different racing back-
grounds. After success in Sportsman and Renegade
cars, Roberts, of Georgia, VT, will make his open-
wheel debut in the No. 50x Bicknell chassis sponsored
by Vermont Life Safety. South Glens Falls, NY driver
Smith was a frequent winner on both the clay and
asphalt Devils Bowl surfaces in the former Duke
Stock class, and will pilot the No. 91 E-Z Marine &
Storage/Wellers Auto Parts Bicknell. Haskins, of
Wells, ran the first five stock car races of his career
last season and earned an impressive seventh-place
finish at Devils Bowl in his Dirt Wheels-built No. 95
Fuller Sand & Gravel/Concrete Professionals, Inc.
car.
Seven rookies populate the Late Model driver ros-
ter. East Montpelier teen and fourth-generation racer
Joey Laquerre made a big splash while testing the
waters in four Devils Bowl starts last year. Rutland
driver Jesse Carris has purchased the former Jacob
McGrath car and will begin his racing career, and
Danny Sullivan of Morrisonville, NY comes to the
Late Models after a solid Sportsman career at Airborne
Speedway. Manhattan police officer and former open-
wheel Formula 2000 and Sprint Car standout Tad
Uzzle of Wappingers Falls, NY makes his full-fender
debut, as does New Hampshire native and former
Granite State Mini Sprint champion dirt tracker
Johnny Chesnut, now living in Elizabethtown, NY.
Rookies planning part-time schedules include multi-
time Allison Legacy Series winner Emily Packard of
East Montpelier and former Canaan Fair Speedway
and Twin State Speedway standout Kyle Davis of
Pittsford.
The entry-level four-cylinder Bomber division has
seen growth in the off-season and claims Vermont-
based rookies Jacob Doran of Benson, Kyle Watrous
of Bomoseen, and Bristols Josh Masterson, a former
Enduro winner at Devils Bowl.
The Devils Bowl Speedway season begins on
Sunday, May 6 with the historic Spring Green event,
and weekly Friday night racing returns to Devils
Bowl beginning May 25 with the Peoples United
Bank Memorial Day Special. Discount season passes
are available. For more information, call (802) 265-
