História
Descobrimento e origem do
nome
São Tomé e Príncipe, um
conjunto de duas ilhas - uma
delas São Tomé, e a outra
agora com o nome de
Príncipe - localizadas no
Golfo da Guiné.

As ilhas de São Tomé e

Príncipe estiveram desabitadas até à
sua descoberta pelos exploradores
portugueses João de Santarém e Pedro
Escobar em 1470.
Origem do
nome Ilha de São Tomé
O seu nome deve-se à data em que foi
descoberta pelos Portugueses, 21 de
Dezembro de 1470, num dia que estava
associado a esse santo em particular,
quase como também aconteceu no caso
do Brasil.

Ilha de Príncipe
Descoberta em 17 de janeiro de 1471,
no dia de Santo Antão, e assim
nomeada, porém, quando o único
herdeiro do Rei D. João II nasceu, ele
ficou tão feliz com a ocorrência que
mudou o nome da Ilha de Santo Antão
dedicando-a assim ao seu filho e
príncipe.

nos antigos territórios colonizadas por Portugal,
também a este pequeno território, com pouco
mais de 1000 quilómetros quadrados, seria
reconhecida a independência.

Rosa Coutinho chefiou a comitiva portuguesa que

transferiu o poder para os responsáveis são-
tomenses.
