A crescente
As condições socioeconômicas e
ABSTRACT
The importance of Visceral Leishmaniasis closes on its high incidence and wide
distribution, and the opportunity to take serious and fatal when associated with
malnutrition and concomitant infections. The increasing urbanization of the disease
occurred in the last 20 years and raised the question of the control strategies
employed. In 1991, visceral leishmaniasis was first sent to the Imperatriz. From that
moment on, human and canine cases of the disease have been systematically
reported. This article sought to observe the incidence of visceral leishmaniasis in the
city. From January 2007 to December 2009, there have been 119 human cases,
males predominated, representing 71 of the total occurrences. Children aged 0 to 9
years accounted for 60 cases in this period. The socio-economic and environmental
conditions found in the municipality are similar to those described by other authors,
with regard to the disease occurrence and maintenance. The main factors to be
considered are the intense population migration, the environmental degradation that
follows the human invasion of the vector ecosystem, the widespread exposure of
susceptible individuals to the vector, coupled with inappropriate sanitary conditions.
Although there are several studies on human visceral leishmaniasis and canine, we
must appreciate and encourage new studies to support the control of this disease.
