Filho de Pete um descendente de porto-riquenhos e Bernadette "Bernie" Hernandez descendente de filipinos , Peter ganhou o apelido de "Bruno" aos dois anos de idade, de seu pai, por sua semelhana com o ex-lutador profissional de wrestling Bruno Sammartino.
