Filho de Pete um descendente de porto-riquenhos e Bernadette "Bernie" Hernandez descendente de filipinos , Peter ganhou o apelido de "Bruno" aos dois anos de idade, de seu pai, por sua semelhana com o ex-lutador profissional de wrestling Bruno Sammartino. De uma famlia com tradio musical, Mars tem ainda mais cinco irmos, sendo o terceiro de seis filhos. Son of Pete - a descendant of Puerto Ricans - and Bernadette "Bernie" Hernandez - descendant of Filipinos - Peter earned the nickname "Bruno" to two years old, his father, for his resemblance to former professional wrestler wrestling Bruno Sammartino. In a family with musical tradition, Mars also has five brothers and the third of six children.
