1 Quando se pretende referir a hbitos repetidos (ou condies perma-

nentes) no passado, mas que j no se aplicam no presente, utilize:

used to + base verbal

(hbitos repetidos)

He used to eat a lot.

Ele comia muito.

When I was a child, I used to play hide-and-seek.

Quando eu era criana, eu brincava s escondidas.

She used to go to church on Sundays.

Ela ia igreja aos domingos.

(condies permanentes)

They used to live in Brighton.

Eles moravam em Brighton.

We used to have a dog.

Ns tnhamos um co.

He used to be lazy.
Ele era preguioso.

Nota 1.1

Quando se refere a hbitos repetidos, a construo:

used to + base verbal

pode ser substituda por:

would + base verbal

Exemplos:

She would come (= used to come) here very often.

Ela vinha c muitas vezes.

She would phone (= used to phone) him every day.

Ela telefonava-lhe todos os dias.

He would sit (= used to sit) there every morning.

Ele sentava ali todas as manhs.

A construo:

used to + base verbal

s existe na forma do passado (Past Simple). No existe em outras

formas verbais.

Exemplos:

(hbitos repetidos no presente)

She uses to come comes here very often.

Ela telefona-lhe todos os dias.

2 Quando se pretende dizer estar habituado a, utilize:

be + used to + verbo(-ing)

ou

be + used to + substantivo

onde be tem a funo de verbo auxiliar e que pode ser empregue em formas
verbais diferentes (e.g. Present Simple, Past Simple, Modal+be, etc.).

Ele deve estar habituado a trabalhar noite.

He can't be used to this new environment.

Ele no deve estar habituado a este novo ambiente.

3 Quando se pretende dizer habituar-se a, utilize:

get (or become or grow) + used to + verbo(-ing)

ou

get (or become or grow) + used to + substantivo

onde get/become/grow podem ser empregues em formas verbais diferentes

(e.g. Present Simple, Present Continuous, Present Perfect Simple, etc.). Get
o mais utilizado, enquanto que become e grow so utilizados em contextos
mais formais.

He is getting used to being called Tommy.

Ele est a habituar-se a ser chamado Tommy.

She finally got used to eating chilli peppers.

Finalmente ela habituou-se a comer malaguetas.

Don't worry. She is going to get used to the city.

No te preocupes. Ela vai habituar-se cidade.

He has grown used to the idea.

Ele habituou-se ideia.
