RESUMO
ABSTRACT
The present work seeks to correlate the artistic, visual, architectural and historical
elements of Praça Pedro II, together with all the extension of structures present in Pedro
II Avenue. From monumental constructions to less expressive elements, such as the ''
lamp-symbols '' of the capital, Praça Pedro II contemplates a vast area to study the
principle of the visual elements, besides being a space of historical rescue: the primitive
name derived of the presence of the Governor Joaquim de Melo and Póvoas, installed in
the barrier of the old French fortification, the headquarters building of the Government
of the Captaincy, now Palace of the Lions. By the resolution nº 20 of December of 1904,
of the City council, the primitive name was changed to Avenue Maranhense, that later
was changed to Place Dom Pedro II. We can find the basis of visual representation
throughout the square: shapes, lines, tones and textures to a greater or lesser degree. The
Palace of Lions, the soul of the square, is characterized by neoclassical architecture:
regular and spaced geometric shapes, referring to shape and rhythm, and the use of
perpendicular lines in ornamentation. Already the Palace of La Ravardière (seat of the
city hall of São Luís) has a symmetrical facade with a tone tonality. In addition to other
elements present in the square, such as bronze statues, benches and lamps. Along the
avenue that cuts the square we can see other more basic elements, like lines and arrows,
representing limits or directions.
