Resumo
Haemonchus contortus is a parasite of the abomasum, of sheep and goats, responsible for
economical losses in Northeast of Brazil. Control is compromised due to the resistance to
several anthelmintics. Substances extracted from plants are alternative in the treatment of
worm, and Melia azedarach have been described as possessor of medicinal properties. In
this work, the activity of ethanolic and hexanic extracts of leaves and ethanolic and
chloroformic extracts of seeds of M. azedarach on H. contortus was evaluated through the
egg hatch (EHT) and larval development test (DLT). The concentrations of the extracts
tested were: 50; 25; 12.5; 6.25 and 3.12 mg mL-1. Due to performance of ethanolic extract
of seeds, it was evaluated in inferior doses, in order to calculate CL50. In EHT, fresh eggs
of H. contortus were incubated during 48 hours in the presence of the extracts. Soon after,
it was counted eggs and larvae under the microscope. In DLT, larvaculture with animal
feces free from nematodes were added to larvae of first stage and the extracts, during 5
days. At the end of the test the larvae were recovered and counted, differentiating 1°, 2°
and 3° stage larvae. CL50 was calculated by the method of PROBITS by the program
SPSS 8.0. The results of the tests were submitted to the variance analysis and test of
Tukey of 5% of significance. The ethanolic extract of seeds was more active in the
inhibition eggs test (CL50: 0.36 mg ml-1), while the ethanolic extract of leaves (CL50: 9.18
mg ml-1), was more effective in the inhibition of larvae development. In the
phytochemistry analysis, the presence of tannins was verified, triterpenes and alkaloids
were present in the ethanolic extract of seeds, and steroids in the ethanolic extract of
leaves.
