ABSTRACT: The purpose of this study is to show the religious expression of the
liturgical chant, pointing to the idiosyncratic experiences from the popular religiosity,
their cultural elements and their contribution to the sociology of religion. In this way,
I intend to: 1) understand the sociocultural aspects of this religious life dynamics,
especially manifested by the music stemming from popular religiosity; 2) consider the
religiosity as a determinant factor of the culture and one of the largest of identity marks
of the society; 3) highlight the value of religious experience while generating social life,
mostly by it’s eminently collective character. Émile Durkheim, about the collectivity of
the religious life and Max Weber, starting from a conception individualizing of religion,
will provide the theoretical foundation.
Keywords: Music. Chant. Religiosity. Sociology of Religion.
