Explains how ideology drove policy

There are a number of things that are quite frustrating about this book - the Cultural
Revolution just seems to come out of nowhere, for instance, yet where it excels is in placing
Mao's actions in a clear ideological context and as such it is a very good book indeed. What
happened in China was another page in the story of the Stalinist nightmare.

Many books about this period suffer from hyperbole and sensationalism. Not so here, I

found the deconstruction of an extremely complex period in Chinese history well balanced
and analysed in a very approachable fashion. Exactly perfect for the undergraduate or,
indeed, the educated amateur historian such as myself.

Insightful and structured description of the social, political and economical dynamics of a
socialist state in the initial stages of its revolutionary period.
The depiction of the production driven economical system is particularly enlightening. There
is some serious research work behind this book.

essential reading for china history and politics

The book adds valuable insights to Mao Zedong's rule. His methods were brutal as he
engineered China to fit his political theories. He was ruthless, constantly purging the
Communist Party of those whose loyalty he questioned, or who had the "wrong"
backgrounds. It is concerning that Xi Jinping is now returning China to a cult of personality,
and sad that too many Chinese either ignore or have forgotten how the Mao cult set back
their country, and took millions of lives.

The man and the system

An excellent and very clearly written analytical history of China under socialism. Although
Mao features prominently (how could he not?), this is not a book about Mao per se. Walder
instead focuses on understanding the economic and social systems that the Communist
Party created under Mao's leadership, and of the problems those systems in turn created.
The book contains, among its many interesting parts, an excellent account of the early days
of Communist rule and the gradual transition to the planned economy. The discussion of
how China fit into the development of other Communist states globally is fascinating, and
the explanation of how the planned economy actually worked is also a model of clarity and
concision. Overall, highly recommended for anyone seeking an understanding of pre-reform
China--though like too many academic books it is massively overpriced. At a more normal
price it would have a better chance of gathering the wider readership it deserves.
