Aula 05
at the moment (no momento), today (hoje), this morning (esta manhã) e etc.

Next week the law office will be employing three hundred people.

P RESENT P ERFECT
O auxiliar é sempre o verbo to have (ter)
no presente simples, ou seja: have (para: I, you, we, they) e has (para as terceiras pessoas do
singular: he, she, it). O verbo principal sempre deve estar no particípio.

The lawyer had just left the office when the police arrived.
Geralmente
aparece contraído, assim: hadn’t.
The student hadn’t done his homework before the computer crashed.

Importante! Verbos intransitivos,
como chorar (to cry), morrer (to die), chegar (to arrive), desaparecer (to disapear), que muitas

Be careful!
Tome cuidado.
Oh do shup up!
Don’t be sad!

adjetivo. Observe os exemplos abaixo:
Observe que na frase acima a 3a pessoa he (ele) é seguido do verbo go e não do verbo
Portanto, ficou o verbo go

INPI – CESPE
Intellectual Property
Industrial property legislation is part of the wider body of law known as intellectual
property. Intellectual property relates to items of information or knowledge, which can be
incorporated in tangible objects at the same time in an unlimited number of copies at different
locations anywhere in the world. The property is not in those copies but in the information or
knowledge reflected in them. Intellectual property rights are also characterized by certain
limitations, such as limited duration in the case of copyright and patents.
The importance of protecting intellectual property was first recognized in the Paris
Convention for the Protection of Industrial Property in 1883 and the Berne Convention for the
Protection of Literary and Artistic Works in 1886. Both treaties are administered by the World
Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).
Countries generally have laws to protect intellectual property for two main reasons. One is
to give statutory expression to the moral and economic rights of creators in their creations and
to the rights of the public in accessing those creations. The second is to promote creativity and
the dissemination and application of its results, and to encourage fair trade, which would
contribute to economic and social development.
Intellectual property is usually divided into two branches, namely industrial property and
copyright. Copyright relates to artistic creations, such as poems, novels, music, paintings, and
cinematographic works. The expression copyright refers to the main act which, in respect of
literary and artistic creations, may be made only by the author or with his authorization.
The broad application of the term “industrial” is clearly set out in the Paris Convention for
the Protection of Industrial Property (Article 1 (3)): “Industrial property shall be understood in the
broadest sense and shall apply not only to industry and commerce proper, but likewise to
agricultural and extractive industries and to all manufactured or natural products, for example,
wines, grain, tobacco leaf, fruit, cattle, minerals, mineral waters, beer, flowers, and flour.”
Industrial property takes a range of forms. These include patents to protect inventions;
and industrial designs, which are aesthetic creations determining the appearance of industrial
products. Industrial property also covers trademarks, service marks, layout-designs of integrated
circuits, commercial names and designations, as well as geographical indications, and protection
against unfair competition. In some of these, the aspect of intellectual creation, although
existent, is less clearly defined. What counts here is that the object of industrial property typically
consists of signs transmitting information, in particular to consumers, as regards products and

The enterprise system (ES) market has grown rapidly and is estimated to be at $ 47.7
billion by 2011 since there are many benefits to organizations, which choose to enable
4organization change through ES implementations.
5However, despite the widespread use of ESs in organizations today, there are still many ES
implementation failures. For example, Maurer (2002) found that the reason for low return on
investments for ES implementations is user resistance. One study found that more than half of
system projects fail while another found only a 16% success rate. Another study even considers
user resistance to be “at the root of many enterprise software project failures”. Other studies
have also revealed how user resistance is a major source of ES implementation failures.
Furthermore, a report on 186 companies that implemented a large system found that resistance
is the second most important contributor to time and budget overruns and is the fourth most
important barrier to implementation.
The ES environment has two key characteristics that make it fertile grounds for an
investigation of user resistance and patterns among types of users. First, ESs typically require
mandatory usage throughout the organization. Usage is mandatory on account of how the level
of system integration demanded in an ES environment requires the participation of all areas of
the organization in order for the ES to succeed.
25 A second characteristic is that it is often easier to reengineer business processes to model
ES processes rather than vice versa. Users are affected because of their deep involvement in the
extensive and complex reengineering processes at work during an ES implementation.
29Thus a user not only is forced to use the system, but the user’s job often is altered to comply
with the new ES processes.

When we think of energy, or fuel, for our homes and cars, we think of petroleum, a fossil fuel
processed from oil removed from the ground, of which we know there is a limited supply. But
alternative fuels can be many things — the wind, sun, and water can all be used to create fuel.
These alternative energies also share the distinction of being what we call renewable resources.
Natural gas, propane, and octane can also be used to create energy, but they are not renewable:
once they are consumed they are gone.
Is the threat of running out of petroleum real? It has taken thousands, if not millions, of years to
create the natural stores of petroleum we have now. We are using what is available at a much

petroleum we have is how much we need to keep in reserve, for future use.

With Ebola nearly stamped out in West Africa, vaccine trials will probably fail to provide
enough useful data on how well they protect people against the deadly virus, the WHO (World
Health Organization) said on Tuesday.
“The best news is we are going to zero cases, there is absolutely no doubt about that,”
said WHO researcher J. Kieny. But two experimental Ebola vaccines being tested on volunteers
may not yield sufficient data on efficacy as case numbers fall, Kieny said.
“It is not clear whether it will be possible to have even a hint of efficacy from these two
vaccines,” she said, noting that they already had been proven safe. “To have efficacy we must
see if people are actually protected, as the number of cases is going down it is not clear whether
15 there will be a strong robust answer to this question at the end of epidemic,” she said.
The WHO, a United Nations agency, hosted a two-day experts’ meeting on Ebola research
and development after the world’s largest epidemic that has killed more than 11,000 since
December 2013.

The objective of reduced risk can be achieved most effectively by the principle of
prevention throughout the production, processing and marketing chain. To achieve maximum
consumer protection, it is essential that safety and quality be built into food 6products from
production through to consumption. This calls for a comprehensive and integrated farm-to-table
approach in which the producer, processor, transporter, vendor, and consumer all play a vital
role in ensuring food safety and quality.
It is impossible to provide adequate protection to the consumer by merely sampling and
analyzing the final product. The introduction of preventive measures at all stages of the 13 food
production and distribution chain, rather than only inspection and rejection at the final stage,
makes better economic sense, because unsuitable products can be identified earlier along the
chain. The more economic and effective strategy is to entrust food producers and operators with
primary responsibility for food safety and quality. Government regulators are then responsible
for auditing performance of the food system through monitoring and surveillance activities and
for enforcing legal and regulatory requirements.
Food hazards and quality loss may occur at a variety of points in the food chain, and it 25
is difficult and expensive to test for their presence. A well-structured, preventive approach that
controls processes is the preferred method for improving food safety and quality. Many but not
all potential food hazards can be controlled along the food chain through the application of

America’s deadliest building fire for more than a decade struck Oakland, California, on
December 2nd 2016, killing 36 people attending a dance party in a warehouse that had become
a cluttered artist collective. The disaster highlights an open secret: many cities lack resources to
inspect for fire risk all the structures that they should. Even though the Oakland building had no
fire sprinklers and at least ten people lived there illegally, no inspector had visited in about 30
years. How might cities make better use of the inspectors they do have?
A handful of American cities have begun to seek help from a new type of analytics software. By
crunching diverse data collected by government bodies and utilities, the software works out
which buildings are most likely to catch fire and should therefore be inspected first. Plenty of
factors play a role. Older, wooden buildings, unsurprisingly, pose more risk, as do those close to
past fires and leaks of gas or oil. Poverty also pushes up fire risk, especially if lots of children,
who may be attracted to mischief, live nearby. More telling are unpaid taxes, foreclosure
proceedings and recorded complaints of mould, rats, crumbling plaster, accumulating rubbish,
and domestic fights, all of which hint at property neglect. A building’s fire risk also increases the
further it is from its owner’s residence.
Predictive software designed at Harvard that Portland, Oregon, will soon begin using will do
that. Perhaps more importantly, the city’s fire chief noticed that buildings marked as being the
biggest risks are clustered in areas lacking good schools, public transport, health care and food
options. Healthier, happier people start fewer fires, he concluded. He now lobbies officials to
reduce Portland’s pockets of deteriorated areas.

Texto 1: INPI – CESPE
Industrial property takes a range of forms. These include patents to protect inventions;
and industrial designs, which are aesthetic creations determining the appearance of industrial
products. Industrial property also covers trademarks, service marks, layout-designs of integrated
circuits, commercial names and designations, as well as geographical indications, and protection
against unfair competition. In some of these, the aspect of intellectual creation, although
existent, is less clearly defined. What counts here is that the object of industrial property typically
consists of signs transmitting information, in particular to consumers, as regards products and
105

Aula 05
services offered on the market. Protection is directed against unauthorized use of such signs
likely to mislead consumers, and against misleading practices in general.
Understanding Industrial Property. World Intellectual Property Organization – WIPO, p. 3-5. In:
Internet: <http://www.wipo.int> (adapted)
03 Protection granted by industrial property rights is exclusive to those products in which the
aspects of intellectual creation are explicit.
04 “Intellectual property” is an umbrella term which defines a group of laws, including those
concerning industrial property.
05 The term “property” can be replaced by the word propriety, without distorting the general
meaning of the text.
06 Copyright and Industrial Property are normally considered as the two constituents of
Intellectual Property.
08 Intellectual property laws concern themselves with the property of the copies of artistic or
industrial products.
106
Inglês p/ PC-DF (Agente) Com Videoaulas - Pós-Edital
Ena Loiola
Aula 05
have also revealed how user resistance is a major source of ES implementation failures.
Internet: <www.palgrave-journals.com> (adapted).
47user resistance can be said to be the reason for low return on investments for ES
implementations.
48 due to the several advantages the enterprise system offers to organizations, its market is likely
to be worth nearly U$ 50 billions by 2011.
49 budget overruns have been considered the most important barrier to ES implementation.
50 the enterprise system strictly demands compulsory usage all through the organization.
51 studies have found that more than half of system projects fail as a result of user resistance.

Like humans, computers can team up with their peers to achieve results that none of them
could obtain alone; unlike humans, they can do many activities at once, and do all of them well.
In spite of that, passé debates on this issue have implicitly assumed that computation is mostly
7sequential — proceeds along a single thread of control. Software developers should now realize
that this assumption no longer holds, as we move to concurrent (also known as parallel)
computation.
Concurrency is not a new subject, but for a long time interest in it remained confined to
four application areas: operating systems, networking, implementation of database management

systems, and high-speed scientific software. Although strategic and prestigious, these tasks
involve only a small subset of the software development community. Things have changed.
Concurrency is quickly becoming a required component of just about every type of application,
including some that had traditionally been thought of as fundamentally sequential in nature.
This advancement gives particular urgency to the study and review of various forms of
concurrency; the evolution of Computer Science requires software developers to make
concurrency part of their mindset. And it is not simply the traditional concepts of multiprocessing

I’ m sure a lot of people in the media are terribly lonely if they just admit it. That’s why you

Being famous is like being extremely beautiful, in that it makes you seem extremely distant.
It can be very difficult for someone like me to go into a bar, for instance. People stare, and
come over and ask for an autograph, which is very nice and flattering, but the assumption is
always: “What on earth is he doing here?” Initially it is very easy to meet people, but it is always

I suffered very badly from loneliness in the past. Like other broadcasters, I am quite timid,
but I was also very ambitious, and that didn’t leave me much time for friendship.

Consultations will be held in coming months on issues including developing protocols,
data sharing and storing biological material including the virus and blood serum of patients,

The objective of reduced risk can be achieved most effectively by the principle of
prevention throughout the production, processing and marketing chain. To achieve maximum
4consumer protection, it is essential that safety and quality be built into food products from

6production through to consumption. This calls for a comprehensive and integrated farm-to-
table approach in which the producer, processor, transporter, vendor, and consumer all play a
vital role in ensuring food safety and quality.
It is impossible to provide adequate protection to the consumer by merely sampling and
analyzing the final product. The introduction of preventive measures at all stages of the food
13production and distribution chain, rather than only inspection and rejection at the final stage,
makes better economic sense, because unsuitable products can be identified earlier along the
chain. The more economic and effective strategy is to entrust food producers and operators with
primary responsibility for food safety and quality. Government regulators are then responsible
for auditing performance of the food system through monitoring and surveillance activities and
for enforcing legal and regulatory requirements.
23 Food hazards and quality loss may occur at a variety of points in the food chain, and it is
25difficult and expensive to test for their presence. A well-structured, preventive approach that
controls processes is the preferred method for improving food safety and quality. Many but not
all potential food hazards can be controlled along the food chain through the application of
good practices i.e. agricultural, manufacturing and hygienic.
Internet: <http://www.fao.org> (with adaptations).
09 To improve food quality, it is really crucial that safety measures be implemented at the
processing stage.
11 Transporters and vendors won’t play any significant role along the food production and
distribution chain.
12 Primary responsibility for food safety and quality should rest with producers and operators.
14 The sentence “it is essential that safety and quality be built into food products” (R.4-5)
follows the same structure as it’s vital that he go straight to the house.

For many years, researchers have drawn attention to the importance of alignment
between business and Information Technology (IT). In early studies, this often meant linking
the business plan and the IT plan. Another perspective involved Ensuring congruence
between the business strategy and the IT strategy. Still another has required examining
the fit between business needs and information system priorities. These conceptualizations
have been enlarged over time and now research recognizes many points of alignment
between business and IT.
Early motivation for alignment emerged from a focus on strategic business planning and
long-range IT planning in the early 1980s. From a business perspective, planning was
characterized as a top-down and a bottom-up process and departmental (e.g., IT) plans were
created in support of corporate strategies. From an IT perspective, decisions on hardware and
software had such long-term implications that tying them to current and future plans of
the organizational unit was a practical necessity.
The business and IT performance implications of alignment have been demonstrated
empirically and through case studies during the last decade. Simply put, the findings support the
hypothesis that those organizations that successfully align their business strategy with their
IT strategy
25 will outperform those that do not. Alignment leads to more focused and strategic use of IT
which, in turn, leads to increased performance.

20 Researchers and business practitioners alike should tie decisions on hardware and software to
corporate strategies.
22 Alignment between business and IT has always been related to examining the fit between
business needs and information system priorities.
23 The text leads to the conclusion that alignment is not always desirable.

inspect for fire risk all the structures that they should.
