Students attitudes to science Shirley Simon and Jonathan Osborne

A well-established aim of school science is to promote enthusiasm for the subject, not only to encourage choice of science post-16 and subsequent careers in science, but also to enhance all students interest in scientific issues in adult life (DeBoer, 1991). Sadly, evidence shows that for many students, this aim is far from realized, for the experience of school science leaves many with the feeling that science is difcult and inaccessible. In recent years there have been a range of studies concerning students attitudes to science, focusing on factors which influence attitudes and subject choice post-16. Though some factors are outside the influence of school, many are concerned with classroom practice. In this chapter we will review significant research which has taken place in this area, focusing on what is meant by attitudes to science; why they have been extensively researched; and what is known about such attitudes. We will then examine the major influences on attitudes to science and subject choice that have been identified, and draw some implications for classroom practice from the range of studies undertaken.

Um objetivo bem estabelecido de cincias da escola promover o entusiasmo pelo assunto, no s para incentivar a escolha da cincia ps -16 e carreiras subsequentes na cincia, mas tambm para aumentar o interesse dos alunos em todas as questes cientficas na vida adulta (DeBoer, 1991). Infelizmente, a evidncia mostra que, para muitos alunos, este objetivo est longe de ser realizado, pois a experincia da escola de cincia deixa muitos com a sensao de que a cincia difcil e inacessvel. Nos ltimos anos tem havido uma srie de estudos sobre as atitudes dos estudantes para a cincia, com foco em fatores que influenciam as atitudes e escolhas sujeito ps-16. Embora alguns fatores estejam fora da influncia da escola, muitos relacionam-se com a prtica de sala de aula. Neste captulo vamos rever pesquisa significativa que teve lugar nesta rea, concentrando-nos sobre o que se entende por atitudes em relao cincia, por que tm elas sido amplamente pesquisadas, e o que conhecido sobre tais atitudes. Examinamos em seguida as principais influncias sobre atitudes em relao cincia e escolha do paciente que foram identificados, e tirar algumas implicaes para a prtica em sala de aula a partir da gama de estudos realizados.
