The Story of Hoichi
The Story of Hoichi
The door is
shut. The world outside is abandoned to darkness. Shadows cover the
hills and mountains, rivers and seas, forests and villages. Inside the
cottage the family gathers round the stove. A lamp glows faintly in the
endless, lonely evening. All of a sudden, the old grandmothers begins,
''Once upon a time...'' In the silence that follows, the family may listen to
a scary ghost tale, for no matter what we do with the dead, the will not
leave us and will forever remain in our memories. Or it may be a story of
God's wonders. Perhaps a parable to show the great truths of life. A
sentimental love story is also welcome. But it can also be a tale of
magic, or a myth, or a legend with a hero. The night is warmer now. The
story is not long. Ten minutes, fifteen minutes out of six or seven hours.
But it is enough. The next day the family can say, ''We had a nice time
last night, didn't we?'' We invite you to read and enjoy these stories.
Some of them have been handed down from father to son for centuries.
Others have been spread all over the world by sailors, merchants,
explorers, and travelers. There are stories from Denmark, China,
Scotland, the USA, France, Korea, Russia, etc. We hope you will enjoy
yourself!
A Ghost Tale
The spirits of the dead are everywhere, believe it or not. We've got
to pay them our respects and honor them, but sometimes that is
not enough, for the dead may want more. In this touching story, a
blind boy has a frightening experience with the unknown.
On a very cold night, the priest was called out to the house of a
dying man. Hoichi was left all by himself in the temple. He sat all
alone and took his biwa. He played for a long time, waiting for the
priest come back.
Suddenly he heard steps coming towards him. They were not the
old priest's steps.
''Hoichi!'' a strong voice called out.
''I am here,'' said Hoichi in alarm.
''Do not be scared,'' said the voice. ''I have been sent to take you
to my master. He wants you to sing for him tonight. Come with
me.''
‘’Hoichi!''Uma voz forte gritou.
noite. Venha comigo.''
