Introducing Yourself Unit 1

A. Try it yourself!
1) Notice how these people talk about themselves in the paragraphs below. Oi! Meu nome Joyce. Eu moro no Brasil, mas estou nos Estados Unidos agora com a minha famlia. Eu tenho 20 (vinte) anos. Moro com os meus pais. Eu falo ingls, um pouco de espanhol e portugus, claro! Eu gosto de conversar com as minhas amigas quando tenho tempo livre. E outra coisa que eu gosto muito aprender novos idiomas. Ol! Eu me chamo Bruno. Eu moro na Alemanha, mas estou no Brasil com os meus amigos. Eu tenho 17 (dezessete) anos. Moro s com o meu pai. Eu falo espanhol e ainda estou aprendendo alemo. Eu gosto de jogar basquete com os meus amigos quando no tenho nada pra fazer. 2) Now lets pretend that you are either Joyce or Bruno from the paragraphs above. Try answering the questions below according to what they said about themselves. Try to find keywords from the question that are also in the paragraphs, because they might help you. a) Qual o seu nome? / Como voc se chama? ___________________________________________________________ b) Onde voc mora? ___________________________________________________________ c) Quantos anos voc tem? ___________________________________________________________ d) Quantos idiomas voc fala? ___________________________________________________________ e) O que voc gosta de fazer no seu tempo livre? ___________________________________________________________

3) Read the first and the second paragraphs again. Notice how Joyce and Bruno introduce their names differently. Write down the words they use to say their names. Joyce: ______________________________________________________ Bruno: _____________________________________________________ 4) Can you answer these two questions below about yourself using the appropriate way of saying your name? a) If someone asks Qual o seu nome? you say: __________________________________________________________ b) If someone asks Como voc se chama? you say: ___________________________________________________________

B. Important grammar!
1) Look at the chart below. It explains how to say your name. If someone asks: Qual o seu nome? Como voc se chama? You say: Meu nome (your name) Eu me chamo (your name).

In Portuguese, the verb se chamar means to be called or to call oneself, which are not the proper English translation. Thats just a way we use to say our names in Portuguese. Now look at the chart below for the conjugation of the verb se chamar in the present tense. Se chamar Eu me chamo Voc se chama Ele se chama Ela se chama Ns nos chamamos Vocs se chamam Eles se chamam Elas se chamam To be called I am called (my name is) You are called (your name is) He is called (his name is) She is called (her name is) We are called (our names are) You are called (your names are) They are called [masculine] They are called [feminine]

2) In the paragraphs about Joyce and Bruno, they told us where they live. The verb to live in Portuguese is morar. Lets conjugate this verb in the present tense. Morar Eu moro Voc mora Ele mora Ela mora Ns moramos Vocs moram Eles moram Elas moram To live I live You live He lives She lives We live You live [plural] They live [masculine] They live [feminine]

But where does everybody live? () Pases no Brasil nos Estados Unidos no Chile em Portugal na Holanda na Alemanha na Finlndia no Canad no Mxico na Dinamarca no Japo na China na Espanha na Sucia na Rssia na frica do Sul na Austrlia na Malsia na Inglaterra na Frana na Grcia Countries in Brazil in the United States in Chile in Portugal in Holland in Germany in Finland in Canada in Mexico in Denmark in Japan in China in Spain in Sweden in Russia in South Africa in Australia in Malaysia in England in France in Greece

3) You have been given already two examples of verbs ending in ar (se chamar and morar) in the present tense. Now show me you can conjugate the verb gostar, which means to like and also ends by ar. In the paragraphs, Joyce and Bruno also tell us what they like doing. Gostar Eu ________________ Voc ________________ Ele gosta Ela ________________ Ns ________________ Vocs ________________ Eles gostam Elas ________________ To like I like You like He likes She likes We like You like [plural] They like [masculine] They like [feminine]

In Portuguese, we usually use the preposition de after the verb gostar when we want to say that we like something. Dont get it yet? Notice how these sentences are made: a) Eu gosto de chocolate = I like chocolate. b) Eu gosto de ma = I like apple. c) Eu gosto de jogar videogame = I like to play videogame. d) Ns gostamos de conversar = We like to talk. e) Eles gostam de comer besteira = They like to eat junk food. f) Eu no gosto de estudar = I dont like to study. g) Eu no gosto de frutas = I dont like fruits. h) Eles no gostam de ler = They dont like to read. i) Voc gosta de correr? = Do you like to run? h) Eles gostam de rir? = Do they like to laugh? j) Voc no gosta de viajar? = Dont you like to travel? k) Voc gosta de azul? = Do you like blue? l) Eu no gosto de amarelo = I dont like yellow. With the help of a dictionary, can you translate the sentence below from Brunos paragraph? Eu gosto de jogar basquete com os meus amigos quando no tenho nada pra fazer. ______________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________.

4) Now Im going to conjugate the verb to speak for you, which is falar Oh, wait a second This verb also ends by ar, so I think you can conjugate it yourself since it also is a regular verb So, please do it Falar Eu ____________________ Voc ___________________ Ele _____________________ Ela _____________________ Ns ____________________ Vocs __________________ Eles ____________________ Elas ____________________ To speak I speak You speak He speaks She speaks We speak You speak [plural] They speak [masculine] They speak [feminine]
