TEXT II Learn In Your Sleep, Researchers Say

U.S. researchers suggest sleeping can help us remember things we have just
learnt. A team from Northwestern University report that a 90-minute nap can help
people learn a new skill. The article on their research is published in the June
edition of the journal "Nature". The scientists say: "Information acquired during
waking can be reactivated during sleep, promoting memory stabilization." Test
volunteers practiced musical tunes before and after a short sleep. During the
nap, the researchers played one of the tunes the volunteers had practiced, but
not the other. The team found that the participants made fewer errors when
playing the melody that had been played while they slept.

Dr Paul J. Reuber said the research might not work with learning a foreign
language while you sleep. He said: "The critical difference is that our research shows that memory is
strengthened for something you've already learned." He added: "Rather than learning something new in
your sleep, we're talking about enhancing an existing memory by re-activating information recently
acquired." However, Dr Reuber did say there were possibilities for language learners: "If you were
learning how to speak in a foreign language during the day, for example, and then tried to reactivate
those memories during sleep, perhaps you might enhance your learning," he said.

TEXT IV Brazil Supreme Court starts massive corruption trial

Brazil's former Chief of Staff Jose Dirceu is
the main defendant in a corruption scandal.

Seven years after politicians were accused in a vote-buying scheme, Brazil's Supreme Court on
Thursday started the trial of 38 people suspected of involvement in the scandal.

Eleven Supreme Court justices started the hearings in the capital city of Brasilia.
The defendants are accused of using public funds to pay lawmakers monthly bribes for their support
during the first government of President Luis Inacio Lula da Silva in 2005.

Lula's former chief of staff, Jose Dirceu, is among the defendants, along with other top members of his
Worker's Party, bankers and businessmen.

The main accusation in what is known as the Mensalao scandal, which means "big monthly allowance,"
is that the Worker's Party diverted funds from advertising budgets -- not for personal enrichment, but to
ensure lawmakers passed Lula's initiatives through Congress.

Defendants have been charged with money-laundering, corruption and accepting bribes. They deny the
allegations.
Brazilian media is calling it "the trial of the century." The trial is expected to last a month and could
tarnish the Workers Party and Lula's legacy ahead of municipal elections.

But current President Dilma Rousseff, also of the Workers Party, has never been connected to the
scandal.
In fact, Rousseff enjoys a strong approval rate of 77% among the Brazilian people. Many Brazilians' view
is that she has taken a tough stand on corruption, tossing out six ministers who were suspected of
misdeeds.

Brazilians have seen their share of scandals. They impeached President Fernando Collor in 1992 for
corruption, but he is now an active senator. Brazil to shed light on 'dirty war' abuse.

TEXT V Anger Disorder High Among U.S. Teens

A new study suggests that a high number of American teenagers suffer from a disorder that leads to fits
of uncontrollable rage. Researchers from the Harvard Medical School conducted a survey and
interviewed over 10,000 teens aged 13 to 17. They discovered that eight per cent of them suffered from
a mental disorder called intermittent explosive disorder (IED). The team says that based on its results,
up to six million youths in the U.S. could be suffering from this illness. IED leads sufferers to suddenly
lose control of even the smallest, non-threatening situations. They can fly into a fit of rage on impulse
and become extremely aggressive. Sufferers break or smash things, scream and shout, become violent
and can attack others. The scientists say it is responsible for a lot of domestic violence and problems at
school.
6

The study is published in the journal of Archives of General Psychiatry. It is
the first large-scale research to document the extent of IED in the USA. Lead
researcher doctor Ronald Kessler described the potential importance of his
research, saying: "If we can detect IED early and intervene with effective
treatment right away, we can prevent a substantial amount of future
violence." He added: "It's a problem because it really gets in the way of your
life. There are lots of things people don't get treatment for because it doesn't
really impact them. This does. The problem is an awful lot of people have it
more than I thought it's awfully chronic, and it's impairing." Dr Kessler
believes it is important this problem is given more recognition. "Social
disorders can fall through the cracks, and this is one of them," he said.
