sobre outros povos, sua cultura e ampliar seu conhecimento sobre vrios assuntos. As aulas de ingls podem
complementar o que voc estuda em outras disciplinas, e ajudam a desenvolver suas habilidades de leitura, de
forma que voc possa compreender as ideias principais de um texto e retirar dele informaes importantes,
sem necessidade de entender todas as palavras.
Neste volume, voc aprender como falar sobre sua famlia, sobre a rea em que vive e os vrios equipamentos urbanos e estabelecimentos comerciais encontrados nas diferentes cidades. Voc tambm vai ver
como muitas palavras que usamos nos esportes tm origem na lngua inglesa e so utilizadas no nosso dia a
dia, adaptadas para o portugus ou em sua forma original.
Junto com seus colegas, voc vai escrever sobre os temas apresentados. Nesse tipo de atividade, alm de
desenvolver sua habilidade para usar o idioma, voc exercita sua capacidade de trabalhar em grupo, que
muito importante para seu crescimento pessoal e para a vida em sociedade.

Welcome to Notting Hill internet guide


Notting Hill is a cosmopolitan district famous for the art
events it holds, for its restaurants and shops and for its
entertainment. In Notting Hill there is a famous market
called Portobello Market, where people and tourists go
and do some shopping. In this market, there are antique
stalls and there is a fruits and vegetables section. There
are also second-hand goods you can buy. It is wonderful!
In Notting Hill there is also a famous carnival parade
called Notting Hill Carnival. You will love to see it.

A DESCRIPTION OF MY NEIGHBORHOOD

1. Brainstorming: In pairs, write sentences about your neighborhood. Use there is, there isnt,
there are or there arent. Example:
There is a hospital.
There arent any clubs nearby.

2. First draft: In groups of four, compare your sentences and write more sentences to complement
the description, including details about activities people do in these places. Refer to the texts
you studied in the Situated Learning sections for help. Example:
There is a hospital. It is a good one. Doctors and nurses work there day and night.

3. Editing: Swap texts with another group and read their description carefully. Can you correct
any mistakes or make indications for them to improve their text? When you nish, ask your

a) Athletes in this sport love water. They train every day, for about 6 hours. The most important
styles are: buttery, backstroke, breaststroke, freestyle and front crawl.

b) In this sport people play in two teams, each one with 11 players. They play it with a ball and
the teams move the ball in order to put it into the opposing teams goal area.

c) In this sport players use a stringed racquet to strike a rubber ball over a net into the opponents
court. The game is played between two players (singles) or between two teams of two players
(doubles). There are four famous tournaments around the world: Australian Open, French
Open, Wimbledon, and US Open.

d) This is a combat sport in which two participants of similar weight ght against each other
with their sts. Victory is achieved if the opponent is knocked down and cant get up before
the referee counts to ten (a knockout).

1. Read the following description of some sports. Do you know their names?
a) This sport was introduced in Brazil by Charles Miller. One of the greatest athletes of all
times is Pel, considered its King.

b) In Japan and in China, this is a very popular sport. It may be played by two or four players,
and you need a special hard table divided by a net to play it. The players use a small light
ball and rackets (also known as bats or paddles).

c) Typical Korean martial art, it is the national sport in South Korea. In general, it focuses on
kicks and has been an Olympic sport since 2000.

d) This sport is very, very old. Its name comes from the Greek legend that tells the story of a messenger
who ran from the city of Marathon to Athens in Greece, in order to tell people that the Greeks had
won the war against Persia. After telling the news, he died, and in his honor the sport was born.
