complementar o que voc estuda em outras disciplinas, e ajudam a desenvolver suas habilidades de leitura, de
forma que voc possa compreender as ideias principais de um texto e retirar dele informaes importantes,
sem necessidade de entender todas as palavras.
Neste volume, voc aprender como falar sobre sua famlia, sobre a rea em que vive e os vrios equipamentos urbanos e estabelecimentos comerciais encontrados nas diferentes cidades. Voc tambm vai ver
como muitas palavras que usamos nos esportes tm origem na lngua inglesa e so utilizadas no nosso dia a
dia, adaptadas para o portugus ou em sua forma original.
Junto com seus colegas, voc vai escrever sobre os temas apresentados. Nesse tipo de atividade, alm de
desenvolver sua habilidade para usar o idioma, voc exercita sua capacidade de trabalhar em grupo, que
muito importante para seu crescimento pessoal e para a vida em sociedade.
O Caderno traz sugestes de sites, msicas e lmes que podem ajud-lo a aprender mais, complementando fora da sala de aula o que visto no programa regular de estudos. H, ainda, as sees dedicadas

A DESCRIPTION OF MY NEIGHBORHOOD
1. Brainstorming: In pairs, write sentences about your neighborhood. Use there is, there isnt,
there are or there arent. Example:

2. First draft: In groups of four, compare your sentences and write more sentences to complement
the description, including details about activities people do in these places. Refer to the texts
you studied in the Situated Learning sections for help. Example:
There is a hospital. It is a good one. Doctors and nurses work there day and night.

3. Editing: Swap texts with another group and read their description carefully. Can you correct
any mistakes or make indications for them to improve their text? When you nish, ask your
teacher to have a nal check.

a) This sport was introduced in Brazil by Charles Miller. One of the greatest athletes of all
times is Pel, considered its King.
b) In Japan and in China, this is a very popular sport. It may be played by two or four players,

Using a bilingual dictionary
Aqui voc vai aprender um pouco mais sobre como usar o dicionrio para estudar ingls.
Material necessrio: vamos precisar de um dicionrio bilngue (ingls > portugus > ingls).
Obs.: se voc no tiver um dicionrio, use o da biblioteca da sua escola ou pea um emprestado
a um colega ou parente.
1. Os dicionrios usam vrias siglas e abreviaes nos verbetes, como as que esto na primeira
coluna a seguir. Ligue cada abreviao com a palavra que ela representa (2a coluna) e com
um exemplo (3a coluna). Siga o exemplo.

4. Como voc deve ter notado, alguns trechos dos verbetes esto sublinhados ou destacados.

voc j teve, anote aqui sua histria e, em sala de aula, conte a um colega a sua experincia.
8. Algum da sua famlia ou de seu grupo de amigos precisa falar ingls por razes prossionais? Em
caso armativo, converse com essa(s) pessoa(s) para saber em que situaes ela(s) j teve(tiveram) de
se comunicar em ingls.
