Abstract
Is relatively old the knowledge that food plants, apart from their nutritional value, can
also play a role in the promotion of human health and in prevention of chronic and
degenerative diseases. Recently has been a growing interest in studying and characterizing
these foods, called functional foods, as well as the bioactive compounds that are responsible
for their biological properties. Hence, we report the elaboration of a free access Web
relational database of plant foods, which contains data related to functional foods, their
bioactive compounds and biological activities. This work is being accomplished through data
search in scientific literature and by use of free software and programming languages
(MySQL, PHPMyAdmin, PHP, JavaScript, HTML, XHTML, CSS and XML). This database

collected. Moreover, it is intended to use textbook that approaches this subject. The research
of data will be carried through from the year of 1990, also. This search is being effected since
January of 2006 and it will always be update to attend the purpose of a valid scientific
database.
This database used the relational model (Heuser, 2004) and as a system of management
of database (SGBD) the MySQL package (de Oliveira, 2002; Rangel, 2004) linked to PHP
language (Muto, 2004 and 2005; Niederauer, 2004; Welling & Thomson, 2005). The
following information had been taken in consideration for the planning of the database:

most of the papers. Many studies investigated the relationship between a variety of substances
and antioxidant activities (Tang et al., 2002; Cuevas et al., 1999; Hannum, 2004). It is known
that body suffer imbalance reactions that lead to free radicals release, which may cause more

In such cases, the body is in oxidative stress (Halliwell, 2000), and this process is involved in
degenerative diseases such as Parkinson and Alzheimer that arise with age (Aruoma, 1998).
Thus, the antioxidant activity is the most studied biological property of bioactive
compounds. This activity depends on its chemical structure and can be determined by the
action of the molecule as a reducing agent, rate of free radicals inactivation, reactivity with
other antioxidants, and the metal chelation potential. Some substances, like quercetin, are
being intensely studied due to it´s antioxidant property (Heo et al., 2007).
The LDL oxidation is a precursor of atherosclerosis event, however the LDL particles

Abstract
There are a growing body of scientific evidence that some kind of foods, known as
functional foods, besides their basic nutritional functions, play an effective role in health
promotion and chronic disease prevention, due to the presence of bioactive compounds as
flavonoids and terpenes. Hence, in order to organize this growing body of information in a
proper way to permit general public access, we have accomplished a relational database on
functional foods, their secondary metabolites and related biological activities using free
