tratamento e uma aplicação para cada um dos demais tratamentos; DCI + 50 mg L-1 de GA3;
cultivares.

ABSTRACT
In the South of the country, in the autumn/winter culture, observed the reduction of the
growth of chrysanthemum caused by low temperatures. This work aimed at evaluating the
action of the gibberellic acid (GA3) and of the technique of short days (SD) interrupted on the
growth of two cultivars of cut chrysanthemum. The experiment was led at Universidade
Federal de Santa Maria, in the period from May to July, 2001. The experiment was conducted
in 2 x 8 factorial scheme and evaluated in a randomized block design, with four repetitions.
Two cultivars “Calábria” and “Lameet Bright”, in different concentrations of GA3 (50, 100,
200, 300 and 400 mg L-1) were tested in four applications for the first treatment and one
application for each of the other treatments; SD interrupted + 50 mg L-1 of GA3; SD
interrupted until antesis; and control with just short days. Four plants for experimental unit
were evaluated, in which a significant increase in the length of the peduncle and in the height
of the plants were observed. Concerning the number of inflorescence, it had a significant
increase when using the SD interrupted for cultivar “Lameet Bright” due to the sprouting of
axillary buttons, which depreciated the quality of the stems. A reduction in the number of
inflorescences for cultivar “Calábria” was observed in all treatments. The greatest fresh
weight was observed with the use of SD interrupted. GA3 application is the best technique to
be used for increasing the length of the floral stem for both cultivars.
