Deep within a well-forested park,
there grew a tall and leafy oak
tree. Its trunk was strong and its
branches were thick and wide. On
one of the lower branches sat a
new nest. Two robins had chosen
this place to start a home. Mama
Robin had laid four beautiful blue
eggs. Day and night she covered
them with her body so they would
stay cozy and warm. Papa Robin
worked hard to find food for
Mama Robin while she tended to
the eggs.

arborizado, havia um alto e frondoso
carvalho. Seu tronco era forte e seus
galhos grossos e compridos. Foi em
um dos galhos mais baixos que dois
sabiás recentemente decidiram
começar um lar. A Mamãe Sabiá
havia posto quatro lindos ovos e
durante dias e noites os chocava
para mantê-los quentinhos e
aconchegados. Enquanto isso, o
Papai Sabiá trabalhava duro
procurando comida para sua esposa.
Finally, one day, the four little eggs
cracked open and out came four
little baby robins. They didn‟t look
much like robins to begin with, but
in a short time they had fluffy
feathers and had all opened their
eyes for a look at the big, wide
world around them.
Mama and Papa Robin gave them all
names. They called the two boys
Billy and Reddy, and they called the
two girls Cherry and Chirpy.
Quando os ovos finalmente se
abriram, nasceram quatro pequenos
sabiás. No princípio não se pareciam
muito com sabiás, mas logo suas
penas cresceram e eles abriram os
olhos para contemplarem o grande e
imenso mundo que os cercava.
Mamãe e Papai Sabiá escolheram
juntos os nomes dos filhos.
Chamaram os dois garotos de Tico e
Teco, e as meninas de Quica e Vivi.
One of the first lessons of life that
all these little baby robins needed
to learn was to have better manners.
They often fought among
themselves over who would get the
best or the most food, and they
never said “thank you” to Papa or
Mama Robin, who worked very
hard to find food for all of them.
No matter how much their parents
talked to them and tried to help
them get along, they were
becoming quite naughty little birds,
quarreling and teasing, and pushing
and shoving much of the time.
Then one day something happened
that changed all that.
Uma das primeiras lições que
aqueles pequenos sabiás tiveram que
aprender foram regras de boas
maneiras. Sempre brigavam para ver
quem pegava mais comida ou o
melhor pedaço. Além disso, nunca
diziam "Obrigado" aos pais, que
trabalhavam duro para achar comida
para todos eles. Nada que os pais
diziam para ajudá-los a se darem
melhor parecia funcionar. Estavam
se tornando passarinhos malcriados,
brigando por causa de comida,
implicando e empurrando-se um ao
outro a maior parte do tempo. Até
que um dia aconteceu algo que
mudou tudo isso.
Mama and Papa Robin were getting
ready to fly out to search for some
breakfast for everyone. This
morning everyone was
extra hungry.
“Papa, can you bring me a nice, fat,
juicy worm?” pleaded Billy.
“I‟ll try, Billy,” said Papa Robin,
“but it‟s not always easy to find
worms, because the ground is hard
and dry now and the worms are
hiding deep underground.”
“Oh, I don‟t like worms,” whined
Chirpy. “They‟re too long and
squiggly to swallow. Papa, can you
just bring us some bugs?”
Mamãe e Papai estavam se preparando
para voar à procura de comida para a
família. Naquela manhã todos estavam
extremamente famintos.
- Papai, o senhor poderia me trazer
uma minhoca bem grande, gorda e
suculenta? - pediu Tico.
- Tentarei, Tico. - respondeu o Papai
Sabiá. - Mas não está fácil encontrar
minhocas. A terra está dura e seca
agora e as minhocas estão se
escondendo mais no fundo.
-Eu não gosto de minhocas! -
choramingou Vivi. - São muito
compridas e difícil de engolir. O
-senhor não pode só trazer uns insetos?
“No way,” piped in Cherry. “Most
bugs are horrible tasting. I‟d rather
have some nice fresh berries.”
“Children, remember your
manners,” Mama Robin gently
reminded her hungry brood. “When
you ask for things, you need to be
kind and polite and say things like,
„Please, Mama and Papa, could you
bring me a nice worm?‟ When there
is food you do not like, you should
still try to eat it with thankful hearts
because God has supplied it and
helped your father and
me find it for you.”
-Nem pensar! - interrompeu Quica. - A
maioria dos insetos tem um gosto
horrível. Prefiro umas amoras gostosas
e fresquinhas.
- Crianças, lembrem-se de ter modos. -
lembrou gentilmente Mamãe Sabiá à

find,” Papa Robin said at last.
Mama Robin usually preferred to
stay near the nest and look for food
close by so she could watch over her
young flock. The problem was that it
was getting harder to find food near
the nest. Mama knew that today she
and Papa would both have to
go quite far away to find all the
different things her children were
demanding.
-Acho que seria bom se pudéssemos
dar o que cada um quer. Teremos que
procurar bastante, mas se eles vão
ficar felizes, vale a pena. Venha,
vamos ver o que encontramos. -
Disse Papai Sabiá por último.
Normalmente a Mamãe Sabiá prefere
ficar nos arredores do ninho e
procurar comida ali por perto para
poder vigiar a ninhada. O problema
era que estava ficando difícil achar
comida próximo ao ninho. O Papai
Sabiá normalmente vai longe à
procura de diferentes tipos de
comida. Mamãe sabia que hoje ela e
o pai teriam que ir bem longe para
poderem encontrar todas as coisas
que os filhos estavam pedindo.
“Papa and I will have to fly quite far
away to find all this different food
for you today. Please try to be
patient and kind to each other while
we are gone. Okay?”
“Okay,” all the young robins
chirped.
-Papai e eu teremos que voar um
-bocado longe para achar tudo o que
vocês querem hoje. Então, por favor,
sejam pacientes e gentis uns com os
outros enquanto estivermos fora, está
bem?
- Tudo bem - piaram os filhotinhos de
sabiá.
So Papa and Mama Robin went flying
off to the far side of the park. Papa
Robin was the first one to spot a very
large earthworm wiggling his way up
to the surface and into the grass. With
great speed he flew down and grabbed
the worm in his beak. The worm
resisted with all its might, and Papa
Robin pulled and pulled, but the worm
was too strong and was getting away.
Mama saw the struggle so she joined
the fray and together they pulled and
pulled, and at last, the great big worm
let go and the happy robins flew back
to the nest with their very large catch.
Então, Papai e Mamãe Sabiá
voaram para o outro lado do
parque. O pai foi o primeiro a
avistar uma imensa minhoca
saindo para a superfície em

the whole worm in.
“Billy,” Mama Robin told him, “this
worm is big enough for all of you. Papa
and I will keep looking, but it takes quite
a long time to fly across the park and
back. You children will just have to
share this worm until we get
back.”
-Vejam! O papai achou a minha
minhoca! - piou Tico. - Ao que
parece vou tomar o café da
manhã primeiro! - disse Tico
abrindo o grande bico esperando
que Papai colocasse nele a
minhoca inteira.
- Tico, - disse a Mamãe Sabiá -
Essa minhoca é suficientemente
grande para todos vocês. Papai e
eu continuaremos a procurar,
mas talvez demore um pouco até
atravessarmos o parque e
voltarmos. Vocês vão ter que
dividir essa minhoca.
Mama and Papa Robin flew off
again to continue their search for
breakfast, leaving the young birds to
work out the details of sharing the
worm among themselves. Well, you
guessed it … Billy didn‟t want
to share.
“Sorry, guys, this is my worm! You
all ordered something else for
breakfast. You‟ll just have to wait
your turn. Chirpy doesn‟t even like
worms anyway.”
Mamãe e Papai Sabiá voaram de novo
para continuar procurando o café da
manhã, deixando os jovens
passarinhos resolverem os detalhes e
dividirem a minhoca. É, aconteceu o
que você pensou... Tico não queria
compartilhar.
- Sinto muito, pessoal, esta minhoca é
minha! Vocês pediram outra coisa para
o café da manhã. Terão que esperar
sua vez. A Vivi nem gosta de
minhocas!
“But what if they can‟t find any
crunchy seeds anywhere?” Reddy
fretted out loud. “I will have no
food today and I am very hungry
right now!”
“Me too,” said Cherry. “Please,
Billy, let us have some of the
worm too!”
“No, no, no! No way! This is my
worm, and I‟m going to eat it all
by myself!”
-Mas e se não conseguirem encontrar
nenhuma semente crocante? -
perguntou Teco impaciente. - Não vou
comer nada hoje, e estou com fome.
- Eu também, - disse Quica. - Por favor,
Tico, deixe-nos comer um pedacinho
da minhoca também!
- Não, não, e não! De jeito nenhum!
Esta minhoca é minha e vou comê-la
sozinho!
That is when the great tug of war
began. Billy grabbed one end of the
worm and Chirpy, Cherry and Reddy
grabbed the other end and started
pulling. Billy was big, but he was no
match for his three siblings all pulling
against him. Billy decided to climb up
on the edge of the nest to get better
footing and yank the worm away from
the rest of them.
Cherry gasped, let go of the worm and
cried, “Oh, please get down, Billy! It
looks very dangerous up there and you
might fall!”
Foi aí que começou o cabo-de-
guerra. Tico segurou uma ponta da
minhoca e Vivi, Quica e Teco a
outra, e começaram a puxar. Tico era
grande, mas não o suficiente para
ganhar de seus três irmãos. Decidiu
então subir para a beirada do ninho
para ficar numa posição melhor e
arrancar a minhoca dos outros.
Quica ficou alarmada, largou a
minhoca e disse: - Por favor, Tico,
desça daí! Parece muito perigoso e
você pode cair!
Billy didn‟t want to answer, because
if he opened his beak he would let
go of the worm, so he just kept on
pulling. He was standing against the
edge of the nest and all that was
holding him was the worm. When
Cherry let go, Billy yanked the
worm with all his might, and Reddy
and Chirpy lost their balance and
fell forward. Billy started to fall
backwards off the edge of the nest!
He opened his beak in fright and lost
hold of the worm. Down and down
Billy fell. He tried to flap his wings
but it didn‟t help much, because he
didn‟t have all of his wing feathers
yet, and besides, he didn‟t know
how to fly. He landed with a “plop”
on some soft grass.
Tico, porém, não quis responder,
porque se abrisse o bico largaria a
minhoca, então continuou puxando.
Ele agora estava quase
completamente fora do ninho, bem
na beirada, e a única coisa que o
prendia ali era a minhoca. Quando
Quica largou, Tico puxou com toda
a sua força e Teco e Vivi perderam o
equilíbrio e caíram para a frente.
Tico começou a cair para trás!
Apavorado abriu o bico e largou a
minhoca. Tico caiu e caiu. Bateu as
asas mas não adiantou nada, porque
ele ainda não tinha todas as penas e,
além do mais, nem sabia voar. Foi
uma queda e tanto até uma moita de
grama macia.
“Oh no!” squawked Reddy.
“Look, Billy has fallen all the
way to the ground. Is he hurt?”
“I don‟t think so,” said Cherry.
“See, he‟s getting up and
hopping around. But he can‟t fly
yet and he is too big for Mama
and Papa to try to lift, so how
will he ever get back in
the nest?”
Their eyes scanned the woods in
every direction to see if help
could be found, but there
was none.
-Oh não! - gritou Teco. - Olhe, o
Tico caiu lá embaixo no chão.
Será que ele se machucou?
- Acho que não, - disse Quica. -
Ele se levantou e está pulando.
Mas ainda não consegue voar e é
grande demais para o Papai ou a
Mamãe carregá-lo, então como é
que ele vai voltar para o ninho?
Olharam atenciosos para a
floresta em todas as direções para
ver se encontravam ajuda, mas
nada.
“Oh no!” cried Cherry. “Look over
there, coming across the lawn this
way! It‟s that big mean old tomcat
that Mama and Papa and all their
friends have to keep chasing away.”
“Poor Billy doesn‟t see him yet, but
that old cat will soon see Billy! We
have got to do something!” Reddy
said in his most determined voice.
“Oh dear, this doesn‟t look too good.
Let‟s all pray for Billy!” said Chirpy.
“Dear God, please keep Billy. Rescue
him from that terrible tomcat, and
somehow, help him to get back up
here in the nest.”
-Oh não! - disse Quica. - Olhem
bem! Vejam quem está vindo nesta
direção. É aquele gato malvado que
a Mamãe, o Papai e todos os seus
amigos estão sempre espantando.
-Coitado do Tico! Ele ainda não o
viu, mas aquele gato logo o verá!
Temos que fazer alguma coisa! -
Disse Teco determinado.
- Ai meu Deus, acho que vai ser uma
tragédia. Vamos orar pelo Tico! -
disse Vivi. "Querido Deus, por favor
proteja o Tico. Salve-o daquele gato
terrível e ajude-o de alguma forma a
voltar aqui para cima no ninho.
Down on the ground, little Billy was
having a few troubled thoughts of his
own. He had no worm. He had no nice
warm nest. His parents were gone and
he was all alone on the ground, the
most dangerous place in the world for
baby birds.
Billy peeked up above the grass and
looked around. His eyes spotted a large
gray tomcat making its way towards
him. His heart froze. I’m in serious
trouble, he said to himself. Billy
decided to pray too. He prayed harder
than he had ever prayed before, and he
was very, very polite when he talked
to Jesus.
Lá em baixo no chão, Tico também
estava preocupado. Não tinha mais a
minhoca e nem o ninho
aconchegante. Seus pais haviam
saído e ele estava sozinho no chão, o
lugar mais perigoso para
passarinhos.
Deu uma olhada à sua volta e viu
um grande gato preto vindo em sua
direção. Ficou com o coração na
mão. Estou encrencado de verdade,
pensou ele. Decidiu então orar. Orou
como nunca havia orado antes, e foi
muito, muito educado ao falar com
Jesus.
“Please dear Jesus, I am so sorry for
being a bad, selfish, grabby and
unthankful bird. I promise I‟ll do my
best to learn my lesson. Oh, please
keep me safe. And please, somehow
help me get back into the nest.”
Closer and closer the old tomcat
came to where Billy sat, still hiding
in the grass. Suddenly, Chirpy
spotted Papa flying towards them,
and Mama behind him. Chirpy cried
out in her loudest voice, “Hurry!
Hurry! Billy is in trouble and there‟s
a cat coming!”
"Por favor, querido Jesus, estou muito,
muito arrependido por ter sido um
passarinho malvado, egoísta e ingrato.
Prometo me esforçar ao máximo para
aprender a minha lição. Por favor,
guarde-me e proteja-me. E por favor,
me ajude a voltar para o ninho de
algum jeito.
O gato preto se aproximava cada vez
mais do lugar onde Tico se escondia.
De repente, Vivi viu o Papai voando
em sua direção e a Mamãe atrás dele.
Vivi gritou o mais alto que pôde:
"Rápido! Rápido! O Tico está em
apuros! Um gato vai pegá-lo!
Papa‟s sharp eyes soon spotted the cat
and could see he was nearly to where
poor Billy was trembling in the grass.
Papa let out a loud, angry cry and
dived straight down at the cat and
pecked his head and flapped his
wings noisily.
Then Mama attacked the cat as well,
swooping in for a quick peck and then
escaping before the cat could catch
her. The cat was so surprised by this
sudden attack from the air that he
raced off across the park.
Papai logo viu o gato, já perto de
onde Tico, tremendo, se escondia.
Papai deu um grito bem alto e
zangado, mergulhou em direção ao
gato e deu-lhe umas bicadas ao
mesmo tempo em que batia as asas
fazendo bastante barulho.
Mamãe também atacou o gato.
Ela acertava-lhe uma bicada e voava
para fora do alcance de suas garras. O
gato ficou tão surpreso que fugiu
correndo para o outro lado do parque.
His brother and sisters gave a sigh of
relief. Billy was safe for the moment.
He wouldn‟t starve because Mama
and Papa would find him and feed
him on the ground. But the ground
was still a very dangerous place and
it would be some time before Billy
could fly.
Then the miracle happened. On the
other side of the open space beside
the great oak tree, an old man had
been resting on a park bench. When
he saw the robins attack the cat, he
knew that they must be protecting
one of their babies.
The kind old man rose from his
bench and strolled over to the oak
tree. It didn‟t take him long to spot
Billy hiding in the grass.
No ninho, os outros passarinhos
respiraram aliviados. Tico estava
seguro por agora. Ele não morreria de
fome porque a Mamãe e o Papai
poderiam alimentá-lo no chão. Mas
era um lugar perigoso e ia demorar um
bom tempo até que Tico pudesse voar.
Foi quando aconteceu um milagre.
No outro lado da clareira onde tudo
estava acontecendo, um homem já
velho descansava no banco do parque.
Ao ver os sabiás atacarem o gato,
imaginou que provavelmente estariam
protegendo um de seus filhotes.
O bondoso senhor, levantando-se, foi
até ao carvalho. Não demorou muito
para ele ver Tico escondido na grama.
 “You look quite healthy and perky,”
the old man told little Billy, as he
knelt down to pick him up. “Is your
nest somewhere nearby?” Then he
heard little Chirpy chirping loudly up
in the tree. She was so worried
about Billy.
“There you go, little fellow,” said the
old man, as he pushed Billy back into
the nest. He smiled at Mama and Papa
Robin and continued on his walk.
-Você parece bastante saudável e
forte - disse o velho ao Tico,
ajoelhando-se para pegá-lo. - Seu
ninho é aqui perto? - Foi então que
ouviu Vivi piar bem alto no ninho.
Como ela estava preocupada com o
Tico!
- Pronto, rapazinho, - disse o velho
colocando Tico de volta no ninho.
Em seguida, sorriu para a Mamãe e o
Papai Sabiá e continuou seu passeio.
“It‟s so good to be home!” said
Billy. “I‟m sorry, everyone! I was so
selfish and unloving. I really learned
a lesson the hard way today!”
“We all learned a lesson today,” said
Chirpy. “I feel like we almost grew
up in one day.”
“Come on, everyone,” said Reddy.
“Look, we still have a nice big
worm to eat.”
-É tão bom estar em casa! - disse Tico.
- Desculpem-me! Fui egoísta e
malvado. Hoje eu realmente aprendi
uma lição da maneira difícil!
- Hoje todos nós aprendemos uma
lição, - disse Vivi. - É quase como se
tivéssemos crescido tudo em um único
dia.
- Venham, - disse Teco. - Olhem! Ainda
temos uma grande minhoca para
comer.
So they all shared the worm with one
another. Mama and Papa Robin
looked on proudly and were so
pleased to see them all behaving so
nicely. From then on, the young
robins made a big effort to be kind to
each other and they were very polite
to their parents. Whenever they were
given some yummy food, they all
chorused a big “Thank you!”
E todos dividiram a minhoca. Mamãe
e Papai Sabiá ficaram olhando com
orgulho e satisfação os filhos se
comportarem tão bem. Daquele dia
em diante, os jovens sabiás passaram
a se esforçar bastante para serem
gentis entre si e muito educados com
os pais. Sempre que ganhavam algo
gostoso, diziam um "Muito obrigado"
de coração!
