F/X: Knock on door.
RHETT: Come in.
F/X: Door opening
RHETT: Well,
TREVNER: Mornin'. Rhett, I want you to meet Mary
Wayne.
RHETT: Miss Wayne, I'm very proud.
MARY: Hi, I...I wanted to know you.
TRAVNER: To MEET him, Mary, not to KNOW him.
Rhett lives in a closed world.
RHETT: Huh, see that? I have no friends.
MARY: We're to be married on Thursday, Mr. Rhett. I
should like you to be there.
RHETT: I'd be most happy. Thank you.
TRAVNER: Now Mary, would you wait outside? I've got
some business to discuss with the sheriff.
MARY: Of course, Matt, but don't be long. Goodbye, Mr.
Rhett.
RHETT: Bye, Miss Wayne.
F/X: Footsteps, door opens and closes.
TRAVNER: Rhett, this afternoon I'm leavin' to find Tod
Mallen. You had you're chance, but you let him go.
RHETT: Wait, Travner, wait...
TRAVNER: (INTERUPTING) I tried patience, Rhett,
and I'm a poor hand at it.
RHETT: Travner, you have a fine girl. If it's not
presuming, let me congratulate you and compliment her.
TRAVNER: Thank you. Was that all?
RHETT: Umm...I'll take care of Mallen. Give me a little
time. It's my job.
TRAVNER: Rhett, I...I want to believe you, but...
RHETT: (INTERUPTING) No man wearing a star
should believe anybody. It's a weakness. Haven't I told
you?
TRAVNER: Don't think I quite understand you, Rhett.
RHETT: Then understand THIS. Every man has his time.
When it comes, he knows it..
TRAVNER: You want help with Mallen?
RHETT: I have no faith in help.
MARY: (off) Matt?
TRAVNER: Comin', Mary!
F/X: Footsteps
RHETT: Wait, Travner!
TRAVNER: Hmmm?
RHETT: I'll suggest this much. Take one man. Ride due
north to where the cattle trail crosses Tempest Creek. Be
there tonight. Understand?
TRAVNER: Rhett, I...I'd hate to oppose you...
RHETT: If you did, you'd lose. I've been fifteen years at
this, Travner, which is five years beyond average luck.
MUSIC
NARRATOR: That evenin', Jack Rhett took up his post
on the porch of the Chinook Hotel. Dressed in his best, a
hard white shirt, a blood-red windsor tie, and a suit of
black broadcloth, swelling around the big uncompromising
shoulders. He sat there, calm behind the smoke of his
cigar...waitin'.
(Batida na porta)
RHETT: Entre.
(Porta abrindo)
RHETT: Bem,
TREVNER: Bom dia, Rhett, quero que conheça Mary Wayne.
RHETT: Senhorita Wayne, estou muito orgulhoso.
MARY: Oi, eu...eu queria conhece-lo.
TRAVNER: ENCONTRA-LO, Mary, não CONHECE-LO. Rhett vive
em um mundo fechado.
RHETT: Huh, entende isso? Não tenho amigos.
MARY: Vamos nos casar na terça, Sr.Rhett. Eu gostaria que o senhor
estivesse lá.
RHETT: Ficaria muito feliz. Obrigado.
TRAVNER: Agora, Mary, pode esperar lá fora? Tenho alguns negócios
para discutir com o sherife.
MARY: Naturalmente, Matt, mas não demore. Tchau, Sr. Mr. Rhett.
RHETT: Tchau, senhorita Wayne.

TRAVNER: Rhett, Esta tarde estarei saindo para encontrar Tod Mallen.
Você teve a sua oportunidade, mas o deixou ir.
RHETT: Espere, Travner, espere...
TRAVNER: (INTERROMPENDO) eu tentei a paciência, Rhett, mas
não sou bom nisso.
RHETT: Travner, você tem uma bela garota. Se não for abuso, deixe-
me parabeniza-lo e cumprimentar-la.
TRAVNER: Obrigado. Era tudo?
RHETT: Umm...Eu cuidarei do Mallen. Me dê um pouco de tempo. É
o meu trabalho.
TRAVNER: Rhett, eu...eu quero acreditar em você, mas...
RHETT: (INTERROMPENDO) Nenhum homem usando uma estrela
deveria acreditar em ninguém. É uma fraqueza. Eu nãojá te falei?
TRAVNER: Não pense que eu não te entendo, Rhett.
RHETT: Então entenda ISTO. Cada homem tem o seu crime. Quando
ele vem, ele sabe.
TRAVNER: Você quer ajuda com o Mallen?
RHETT: Não acredito na ajuda.
MARY: (em off) Matt?
TRAVNER: Estou indo, Mary!
(Passos)
RHETT: Espere, Travner!
TRAVNER: Hummm?
RHETT: Vou sugerir só isso. Pegue um homem. Monte em direção ao
norte para onde a Trilha de gado cruza Tempest Creek. Esteja lá hoje a
noite. Entendeu?
TRAVNER: Rhett, Eu odiaria ...odiaria afronta-lo...
RHETT: Se o fizesse, perderia. Estou nisto há quinze anos, Travner, o
que é cinco anos a mais do que a sorte média.
MÚSICA
NARRADOR: Naquela noite, Jack Rhett tomou o seu posto no pórtico
do Hotel Chinook. Bem vestido, uma camisa branca, uma gravata
windsor cor de sangue, e um terno de fazenda preta enfestada, inchando
em volta dos enormes ombros descompromissados. Ele sentou lá, calmo
atrás da fumaça de seu charuto...esperando.
MAN: Full moon, tonight, sheriff. HOMEM: Lua cheia, hoje a noite, sherife.
RHETT: That's right. RHETT: Isso mesmo.
MAN: No offense, mind you... HOMEM: Sem ofença, se importaria...
MAYOR: Good evenin', Rhett. PREFEITO: Boa noite, Rhett.
RHETT: Hello, Mayor Wayne. Uh...Mayor, have you RHETT: Olá, Prefeito Wayne. Uh...Prefeito, o Sr. Viu o Travner?
seen Travner?
MAYOR: He rode north, this afternoon. Be back MAYOR: Ele montou para norte, esta tarde. Estará de volta amanhã, ele
tomorrow, he said. disse .
RHETT: Good. RHETT: Bom.

F/X: Horse gallops (Cavalo galopa)

ANOTHER MAN: Where's the sheriff?
RHETT: Here I am.
F/X: footsteps coming up stairs
MAN: Rhett, listen! I just came up South Creek, and Tod
Mallen and six men were only a quarter-mile behind me,
headin' into town.
RHETT: Alright, friend. Take cover.
MAN: Yeah.
OUTRO HOMEM: Onde está o sherife?
RHETT: Aqui estou.
HOMEM: Rhett, OUÇA! Acabei de subir a South Creek, e Tod Mallen
e seis homens estavam a apenas um quarto de milha atrás de mim, indo
na direção da cidade.
RHETT: Tudo bem, amigo. Proteja-se.
MAN: Sim.

WALLA sons de confusão

NARRATOR: Rhett stood up and moved into the shadow
at the end of the hotel porch. Across the street, Bohellen
appeared in the full glow of the doorway of his saloon.
BOHELLEN: Come out of the dark and meet your price,
Jack Rhett! What're you afraid of? It's only Mallen ridin'
in to see you!
RHETT: Thieves fall out, but the urge for profits brings
them together again.
BOHELLEN: You should've known it, Rhett.
F/X: footsteps
RHETT: Nothing surprises me.
BOHELLEN: Well...oh, there you are, Rhett. Surprised to
find you exposin' your great reputation out there in the
street.
RHETT: Every man has his time. You wanna try it,
Bohellen? Or will you wait for help?
BOHELLEN: I'll wait.
F/X: horse gallops
NARRATOR: The arriving horses came up into the
moonlit street, and halted at the corner of the saloon.
Bohellen's hand lifted toward the group.
And at that order the horsemen spread out until they
were plank to plank all across the street. Tod Mallen
advanced from the line and stopped, square and alert
above the saddle.
Jack Rhett stood alone in the middle of the street, his eyes
flashing a hard jury. And he dropped his cigar and he
ground it beneath the boot. It was a final gesture.
RHETT: How are you, Mallen? Goodbye, gentlemen.
NARRADOR: Rhett se levantou e se moveu para dentro das sombras no
fundo do pórtico do hotel . Do outro lado da rua, Bohellen apareceu no
brilho completo da entrada da porta de seu bar.
BOHELLEN: Saia do escuro e conheça o seu preço, Jack Rhett! Está
com medo de quê? É apenas o Mallen dando uma passadinha para ve-
lo!
RHETT: Ladrões se desbandam, mas pressa para os lucros os reunem
novamente.
BOHELLEN: Você deveria saber, Rhett.
(passos)
BOHELLEN: nada me surpreende.
BOHELLEN: Bem...oh, aí está você, Rhett. Estou surpreso em
encontra-lo espondo a sua grande reputação no meio da rua.
RHETT: Todo homem tem sua hora. Quer tentar, Bohellen? Ou vai
esperar ajuda?
BOHELLEN: Esperarei.
(Galopes)
NARRATOR: O cavalos que chegavam subiram a rua iluminada pela
lua, e pararam na esquina do bar. Bohellen levantou a mão na direção
do grupo.
E seguindo as ordens os cavaleiros se espalharam até que ficassem lado
a lado na rua. Tod Mallen avançou a linha e parou, acomodado e alerta
sobre a sela.
Jack Rhett ficou sozinho no meio da rua, dos seus olhos brilhava um júri
severo. Derrubou (deixou cair) o seu charuto e o esmagou embaixo
da bota. Foi o gesto final.
RHETT: Como vai, Mallen? Adeus, senhores.

F/X: gunshots, moans (Tiros e gemidos)

MUSIC MÚSICA
NARRATOR: Next day, Red Mesa buried some more NARRATOR: No dia seguinte, Red Mesa enterrou mais alguns homens

warning.
After that it was just a matter of pride. He killed Mallen
and Bohellen before he died...standing up, and in good
style. And that's sort of a...a greatness. Isn't it?
MUSIC
no meio da rua, e enfrentou todos eles sob a luz da lua. Por quê? Não era
o seu estilo.
TRAVNER: Enquanto ele tinha certeza de si mesmo, ele nunca deu uma
chance igual para niguém, Mary. Mas matadores vivem e morem por
instinto. Em algum momento na noite, ele recebeu o aviso.
Depois disso foi apenas uma questão de orgulho. Ele matou Mallen e
Bohellen antes de morrer...saindo por cima, e em bom estilo. E isso é um
tipo de grandeza, não é?
